Cottrell, Chase, Mayers test positive for Covid-19

The trio, along with a non-coaching member, will be unavailable for the T20I leg of the Pakistan tour

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Dec-2021Sheldon Cottrell, Roston Chase and Kyle Mayers are among four members of the West Indies touring party who have tested positive for Covid-19 upon arrival in Pakistan on December 9. The trio, along with a non-coaching member of the team management, will undergo self-isolation and will subsequently be unavailable for the three-match T20I series, which begins in Karachi on Monday. The touring squad landed in Karachi in a commercial flight from the Caribbean via Dubai, and have been confined to their rooms since then. The four members tested positive in the initial tests that were done after arrival.Johnny Grave, the CEO of Cricket West Indies, confirmed that the tour will go ahead as scheduled despite the Covid-19 cases.”Our arrival testing protocols in Pakistan have confirmed four (4) Covid-19 positives,” Grave said. “These were confirmed whilst the players and staff were still in room isolation, so despite this significant setback to our preparation plans, we are confident that the tour can continue as everyone else returned negative PCRs prior to their arrival into Pakistan and two negative PCRs since they have been in Karachi.Related

“The risk of Covid-19 infection is impossible to remove completely from a cricket tour, in spite of the fact that many of our players have been living in bio-secure bubbles almost continuously since before the CPL. This unusual loss of three players from our squad will seriously impact our team preparations, but the rest of the squad are in good spirits and will begin training today ahead of our first game on Monday.”A CWI media release added that “all four members are fully vaccinated and are without major symptoms”. But they will stay in isolation for 10 days and will not be allowed to join the main group until they return negative tests. They will be monitored by Dr. Akshai Mansingh, the team physician. The absence of Cottrell, Chase and Mayers further depletes a West Indies team that is already without many of their senior players. While regular captain Kieron Pollard has been sidelined with injury, Andre Russell is in Australia playing the Big Bash League.Karachi will host the entire white-ball series, which comprises three T20Is and three ODIs, the last of which is on December 22.

Melbourne Stars vs Perth Scorchers postponed due to a Covid-19 case in Stars' camp

The positive result came from a member of the support staff just hours before the game was due to take place

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Dec-2021The BBL match between Melbourne Stars and Perth Scorchers on Thursday has been postponed due to a Covid-19 case within the Stars’ camp. The positive result came from a member of the support staff on Thursday afternoon just hours before the game was due to take place. All other members of Stars’ squad who had been in contact with the case have since undertaken PCR tests but are still awaiting the results, meaning the game cannot take place at the Marvel Stadium. It was already one of Scorchers’ rearranged fixtures due to the border restrictions in Western Australia.”While regrettable, the decision to postpone tonight’s match was the only option available given the exposures within the Stars cohort,” Alistair Dobson, the general manager of the Big Bash Leagues, said.Related

“The League has a number of biosecurity protocols in place to keep our participants safe and the competition moving forward. These protocols are regularly reviewed in response to the risks in each state. Safety remains our number one priority, and we will work with the Stars to get their side back on the field as soon as possible.”It is the first time the BBL or the WBBL has been directly hit by a Covid-19 case during the pandemic, and comes amid rising cases around Australia. Sydney Thunder’s Sam Whiteman missed a game earlier in the season due to being a possible close contact.Thursday’s postponed match will be replayed later in the season, although no new date has yet been set; but already, there is very little room for disruption in the BBL schedule.Melbourne Stars General Manager Blair Crouch said: “The staff member is being managed by Melbourne Stars medical staff in consultation with Cricket Australia and we look forward to them being able to return to the group in due course. We have key home matches scheduled on January 2 and 3 in Melbourne so we hope to have more clarity through testing over the next 24-48 hours.”Unlike the men’s Ashes series – which has also been hit by a Covid-19 outbreak in the England touring part as well as to match referee David Boon – BBL clubs travel on commercial rather than chartered planes.Earlier in the season, a Sheffield Shield match between New South Wales and Victoria was postponed for a day after allrounder Will Sutherland tested positive. The Ashes tour is currently attempting to remain on track despite an outbreak in the England squad which has now reached seven cases, the latest one forcing head coach Chris Silverwood into isolation as a close contact. The first of the cases in the England camp emerged on the second day of the MCG Test but the game was able to continue after the playing group all returned negative rapid test results, with Victoria having a looser definition of close contacts which is now being adopted more broadly.

AC Milan manager Sergio Conceicao claims reported rift with USMNT Christian Pulisic built on 'lies,' defends decision to substitute star in UCL loss to Feyenoord

Milan manager claims Pulisic is not completely fitAdds reports of a rift between two is built on "lies"American leads team in G+A across all comps in '24-25Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

U.S. international Christian Pulisic is reportedly not 100 percent match fit for AC Milan, per manager Sergio Conceicao.

The American suffered a muscle issue in January that saw him miss a Jan. 18 match against Juventus, and he's been used cautiously since in Serie A action, with two starts and two appearances off the bench since.

Milan exited the UEFA Champions League this past week in disappointing fashion after a two-legged defeat to Dutch side Feyenoord. Conceicao started Pulisic in both matches but subbed him off the pitch earlier than expected both times. Speaking ahead of the weekend match against Torino on Friday, he shared fitness updates regarding his squad, including sharing that Pulisic is not fit to play 90 minutes.

“[Kyle] Walker is unavailable. Pulisic doesn’t have 90 minutes in his legs, [Santiago] Giménez is improving every day but is not yet at the level we want him to be," Conceicao said at a news conference. "We are working on it. At least for the style of play I want, he needs to be intense for the full 90 minutes.

“I found some players struggling in this regard, as well as some injuries. Playing every three days, always in decisive matches – because here, if you draw, it’s like losing – always being on the edge, it’s not easy to manage.”

After the midweek exit in European competitions, reports surfaced that Pulisic was unhappy with the Portuguese manager, and that after the match a feud developed between the two. However, Pulisic denied the reports, and now Conceicao has doubled-down on the American's comments, claiming the various reports to be "lies."

“I keep reading lies and lies in the press," Conceicao said. "I don’t like this. I am in front of you every three or four days. If you have any doubts I'll tell you, I am upfront. Lies hurt, players today are active in social media. It is not easy to manage the group with also things to improve on the pitch. Sometimes I also have to manage things that do not belong to me, but it is my group and I have to manage it. Only with my group in the best conditions can I win.”

DID YOU KNOW?

In Serie A competition, Pulisic has six goals and six assists for Milan, while across all competitions, he has 17 total goal-contributions for the Italian club in the 2024-25 season.

Arsenal are not happy with Raheem Sterling after new London Colney update

Arsenal have been left frustrated by Raheem Sterling since his arrival at the Emirates Stadium, it has been reported this week, with the Chelsea loanee yet to impress in red and white.

Sterling yet to excite in Arsenal colours

Raheem Sterling’s deadline day move from Chelsea to Arsenal was seen as something of a coup by some in north London. Joining on loan with Chelsea paying a significant portion of the attacker’s wages, he arrived as an experienced Premier League player who was already used to working under Mikel Arteta from the pair’s time at Manchester City.

However, it hasn’t worked out for either party as yet, with Sterling starting just two Premier League games and yet to get off the mark for his new side in England’s top tier, though he registered a goal and an assist in a 5-1 thrashing of Bolton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup third round in September.

The lack of minutes is even more concerning for Arsenal when their stuttering start to the season is taken into account, with Sterling not trusted to play a major role in Premier League games despite both Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard struggling to find form, while he has also not been trusted to ease the burden on Bukayo Saka despite his ability to play on either flank.

Now, it has been reported that Arsenal are less than happy with the forward.

Arsenal concerned about Sterling

That comes as former scout Mick Brown has claimed that Arsenal are unhappy with Raheem Sterling’s performances in training since his arrival, something that is threatening to derail his loan spell. Speaking to Football Insider, Brown revealed that the Gunners have “some concerns” and that his performances on a day to day basis haven’t been “completely up to scratch”.

“I know there are some concerns about him,” he explained. “It’s an interesting one with Sterling, because they bailed him out of Chelsea when he was set to be cut adrift from the squad there.

“Getting him on loan was seen as a real coup because Chelsea are still paying most of his wages.

“But when they’re looking for results he doesn’t come on. That points to some clear issues behind the scenes, and I’ve heard his training might not be completely up to scratch.

“We know Arteta demands a certain level from his players and isn’t scared to leave them out if they aren’t meeting his expectations. I think it’s a pretty damning sign that, even with their injuries and issues up front, he’s hardly played aside from cup games.

“They’ve been in need of a consistent winger and he still can’t get a game at the moment.”

Arsenal will be hoping that the international break gives both parties the chance to rectify the situation, with the Gunners already nine points adrift of Sterling’s former club Liverpool at the top of the Premier League and in danger of dropping out of the title race entirely.

3 passes, 0 duels won: Clement must now ditch Rangers’ 8-touch liability

The Glasgow Rangers supporters would have been hoping that Storm Bert’s devastation across Scotland would have given the club a day off, especially considering the dismal performance the Ibrox side delivered on Saturday.

Yet again, more Premiership points were dropped and yet again, Philippe Clement’s side displayed no sense of dynamism or fluidity during the 1-1 draw against Dundee United.

Any hopes of a serious title challenge are now surely over with four weeks left until Christmas. It isn’t the greatest time to be a fan and even the most ardent of supporters aren’t looking forward to the League Cup final against Celtic next month.

Vaclav Cerny was on the scoresheet once again to rescue a point for the Light Blues, and he is turning out to be one of Clement’s finest players at the moment.

The best and worst performers for Rangers vs Dundee United

Cerny not only scored the equaliser, but the winger also made eight key passes, succeeded with five dribbles and managed six total shots during the clash. Any other night and he could have scored three.

Nicolas Raskin once again looked solid in the heart of the midfield, completing 90% of his passes and winning eight total duels.

Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin

Mohamed Diomande was deployed as an attacking midfielder, but he was subbed off at half-time, contributing just 15 passes, zero shots and zero key passes in what was a poor performance indeed.

It wasn’t as bad as Cyriel Dessers’ display, however, as the striker continued to find new ways of somehow performing worse than his previous game…

Cyriel Dessers’ stats vs Dundee United

Rangers won’t win another league championship with a centre-forward like Dessers leading the line. Some sections of the support may harp on about his scoring record, but the fact is, he is an infuriating player who contributes next to nothing.

Against the Arabs, the Nigerian completed three passes – yes, three – managed zero shots, lost both of his aerial duels and took just eight touches during the first half before he was subbed off for Danilo.

The Brazilian went and grabbed an assist for Cerny’s goal while looking ten times as lively as Dessers.

Going forward, Clement must start Danilo ahead of the 29-year-old, otherwise, the club are going to continue to drop points domestically, that’s for sure.

Journalist Hernan Federico Pacheco claimed that Dessers has “an allergy to scoring like never before” and it is hard to disagree with the Argentinian.

Cyriel Dessers

Unfortunately, it looks as though the fans will have to put up with the former Feyenoord striker leading the line against Nice on Thursday, as Danilo isn’t registered as part of the European squad in what was a bizarre choice by the manager.

January simply cannot come soon enough. Will Clement still be in charge by that point? At this moment in time, that looks highly unlikely.

Washington Sundar ruled out of West Indies T20I series with hamstring injury

Kuldeep Yadav has been named as his replacement

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Feb-2022Washington Sundar has been ruled out of India’s three-match T20I series against West Indies, which begins in Kolkata on Wednesday. According to a BCCI release, the spin-bowling allrounder suffered a hamstring strain while fielding during the third ODI in Ahmedabad on Friday.Left-arm wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav has been named as Washington’s replacement in India’s squad. The hamstring strain is the latest in a series of injuries and illnesses that have hounded Washington over the last few months. First, he was forced to miss the second half of IPL 2021 in the UAE after suffering a finger injury. He returned to domestic action during the 50-overs Vijay Hazare Trophy, helping Tamil Nadu reach the final, but a bout of Covid-19 kept him waiting for his international comeback, ruling him out of the ODI leg of India’s tour of South Africa in January this year.Washington finally returned to India colours during the ODIs against West Indies, playing all three games and showing promise with both ball and bat. He picked up four wickets at 18.75, while conceding just 4.16 runs per over, and he also contributed scores of 24 and 33 in his two outings with the bat.Just when he seemed to be back in the thick of things, however, injury has struck once more.As a specialist bowler, Kuldeep isn’t a like-for-like replacement for Washington; the batting ability of seamers Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar and Harshal Patel, however, should still allow India to pick an XI without compromising on their batting depth.India squad for T20I series: Rohit Sharma (capt), Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Venkatesh Iyer, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Ravi Bishnoi, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammed Siraj, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Avesh Khan, Harshal Patel, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Deepak Hooda, Kuldeep Yadav.

Brunt, Wyatt find form to lift England to big win against Pakistan

Defending champions bowl out Pakistan for 105 and chase it down inside 20 overs to keep semi-final hopes alive

Valkerie Baynes24-Mar-2022Katherine Brunt and Danni Wyatt rediscovered some form to dovetail with England’s World Cup resurgence as the defending champions made it three wins in three matches with a comprehensive nine-wicket victory over Pakistan in Christchurch.Brunt, the veteran England seamer, had taken just one wicket from five matches in the tournament before she and Sophie Ecclestone took three wickets each to help contain Pakistan to 105 all out inside 42 overs.Related

'About time' – Wyatt and Brunt give England a leg up with 'most complete performance'

Wyatt then scored an unbeaten 76 off 68 balls to bring it home with 30.4 overs to spare for England, who remain in control of their own semi-finals destiny. They moved to six points and into fourth place on the table, fractionally ahead of India on net run rate, after South Africa secured their place in the top four by sharing the points in a rained-off match with West Indies, who must now rely on other results to get through.England, who lost their opening three games, made a slow start to their chase as Diana Baig caused them some trouble, helping restrict the openers to just six runs in the first three overs. Wyatt got a second life on four when she cut Fatima Sana to gully where Nida Dar got her fingertips to the ball but couldn’t hold on.Wyatt made it count, hitting the next three balls for four runs each, pulled through square leg, driven in the air through cover and threaded fine through fine leg.Once Baig removed Tammy Beaumont lbw for just two, with Pakistan overturning the initial not-out decision, she then had new batter Heather Knight watchful, squaring her up first ball with one that just managed to evade slip then, next over, twice beating the bat and tangling her up with a yorker that the England captain just managed to dig out. After four overs, Diana had 1 for 7 as Wyatt hit her stride against Aiman Anwer, helping herself to four more boundaries including a powerful drive between point and cover-point as she moved to 36 from 32 balls to guide England to 48 for 1 at the end of the powerplay.Wyatt was elevated to open in England’s third match, a three-wicket loss to South Africa, replacing the out-of-form Lauren Winfield-Hill. Her previous best score of this tournament had been 33 batting at No. 7 against West Indies before Thursday.Danni Wyatt thrashes celebrates her fifty•ICC via Getty ImagesWyatt brought up her maiden World Cup half-century with a single to cover off Nashra Sandhu, and she drew England within 14 runs of victory with back-to-back fours off Dar before hitting the winning runs with a four off Fatima through fine leg, her 11th boundary of the innings. It was Wyatt’s second-highest ODI score as Knight settled into a supporting role to end not out on 24.Having won the toss and opted to bowl first on a Hagley Oval pitch boasting some live grass, England struck first ball via Brunt. She looked skywards with arms outstretched in relief when she had Nahida Khan, called into the Pakistan side to open in place of Muneeba Ali, caught at slip by Knight playing a long way forward to a full, late-moving outswinger that found the outside edge.Pakistan then lost their captain, Bismah Maroof, when she turned a full ball off Anya Shrubsole to the vacant region at backward square leg and called for a second run as wicketkeeper Amy Jones sprinted after the ball and fired it in sharply to the striker’s end, where Sophia Dunkley was waiting to remove the bails with Bismah short of her ground. That left Pakistan at 2 for 11 inside the first four overs, and by the end of the powerplay, they had added just 17 more runs.Omaima Sohail was run out rushing a single off Kate Cross as Beaumont swooped at mid-off and threw down the stumps at the non-striker’s end with an excellent direct hit.Pakistan were largely well contained, facing 18 scoreless balls and nine overs without a boundary before Sidra Ameen – having survived an England review for lbw off the previous delivery on umpire’s call – threaded Cross through square leg for four.Brunt struck again to remove Dar, trying to sweep a full-length ball that struck low on the front pad directly in line. She claimed her third with a gem of a length ball that seamed back in slightly as Ameen tried to steer it toward third man but managed only to get an inside edge onto her stumps to fall for 32, the top-scorer on an underwhelming Pakistan scorecard. After leaving impressive off-spinner Charlie Dean out of the side in favour of an extra batter in Emma Lamb, Knight brought herself into the attack to great effect when she tempted Aliya Riaz into a sweep and got a top edge to loop to Shrubsole at short fine leg.Ecclestone claimed three wickets in as many overs when she had Fatima Sana and Aiman Anwer caught behind by Jones and then wrapped up the Pakistan innings with a wonderful ball that was full and straight to peg back Diana’s middle stump. In between, Cross was miserly with her relentless line and length and she was rewarded on an excellent full-length ball that nipped back in to take out Sidra Nawaz’s leg stump.

Director talks to Man Utd over ÂŁ62m stars possibly moving to Old Trafford

Manchester United have been in contact with a club director over a pair of stars valued at ÂŁ62m this week, it has been reported, as the two clubs look to come to an agreement.

Man Utd eyeing new reinforcements under Amorim

Ruben Amorim’s first game in charge highlighted just how much work needed to be done at Old Trafford. A 1-1 draw with Premier League new boys Ipswich Town left the Red Devils 12th in the Premier League, and Amorim pulled no punches in his assessment of the squad.

“I know it is frustrating for the fans but we are changing so much in this moment with a lot of games. We are going to suffer for a long period. We will try to win games but this will take time.

“We have to risk it a little bit [now] and in the next year we will be better [otherwise] next year at the same stage we will be here with the same problems.”

One of the problem areas is central midfield, where Casemiro and Christian Eriksen looked pedestrian at Portman Road. That will be boosted by the integration of Manuel Ugarte and the return of Kobbie Mainoo from injury, but there is precious little cover for the duo, with Eriksen out of contract at the end of the season and Casemiro arguably well past his best.

Reinforcements will be needed sooner rather than later at Old Trafford, and now they have seemingly been offered the chance to sign them as early as January.

Man Utd offered midfield duo by Juventus

That comes as Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport [Via Sport Witness] report that Juventus director Cristiano Giuntoli made use of his side’s trip to Aston Villa to hold talks with the Red Devils and rivals Manchester City over potential deals for Nicolo Fagioli and Douglas Luiz.

Luiz only arrived in Turin in the summer but has found game time hard to come by with Thiago Motta preferring other options in his engine room. Meanwhile, Fagioli has started just four Serie A games so far this season and is more often used from the substitutes bench.

Douglas-Luiz-Aston-Villa

As per the report, Juve “want to sell” the pair in January “to raise funds” in order to sign a new striker and defender. They are said to value Fagioli at up to €25m (ÂŁ21m) and Douglas Luiz at a more costly €50m (ÂŁ41m).

Interestingly though, it is added that in the case of Luiz, they would “be willing to use him to carry out a swap deal”, which could play into Manchester United’s hands given Juventus’ reported interest in Joshua Zirkzee.

It remains to be seen whether anything transpires from the talks, with Juventus having reached out to drum up interest in the duo rather than vice-versa. Amorim is likely to have more pressing issues than midfield in January as he looks to reshape his squad. However, Luiz is already Premier League proven and has been labelled “world class” by former teammate John McGinn.

Could a low-cost swap deal be the perfect solution for all parties, landing Amorim a new midfielder in the process and clearing the way for a potential swoop to sign Viktor Gyokeres in the summer?
