'We're not aware of it' – Santiago Baños, América's sporting president, says the possibility of taking León's place in the Club World Cup is 'all speculation'

In recent weeks, following Club León’s expulsion from the Club World Cup for violating the tournament’s multi-ownership regulations, América has been one of the teams rumored to take the place – a team that includes former Real Madrid player James Rodríguez.

It has been suggested that América could be considered due to being the highest-ranked Liga MX team in CONCACAF. FIFA has also said it is considering a playoff match between América and LAFC for the vacant spot, and even Costa Rica’s Alajuelense, like León, have taken the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to fight for the spot.

Santiago Baños, América’s sporting president, denied any knowledge about whether the team will be considered by FIFA to compete for that spot:

“We haven’t received nor do we have any information on the matter," he said. "Regarding the ranking, just a week ago there was talk about a possible match between América and LAFC. We’ve stayed on the sidelines – even before FIFA’s announcement, everyone was already naming América as a candidate, but we’re not involved at all. This is an issue between León, FIFA, and CAS. We’re just focused on our work. We're not aware of it, nor do we give it any importance because it’s all speculation. We don’t know anything about it.

“FIFA has made its position clear – it sanctioned a team that violated the multi-ownership rule. FIFA has taken a clear stance. Now it’s up to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to issue its opinion, and then we’ll see what happens. Right now, we can’t afford to be thinking about the Club World Cup or CAS when we have an important league match, followed by another big game in Monterrey. If something happens, I’ll sit down and we can hold this press conference again. But today, it’s all speculation – and on top of that, there are many different versions out there.”

La Fiera will have a hearing before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) during the week of May 5 to determine whether they can regain their spot. However, in recent days, FIFA – through its appeals committee – upheld its decision to exclude the team coached by Eduardo Berizzo.

Getty Images SportWHAT SANTIAGO BAÑOS SAID

Baños refused to comment Friday on the speculation surrounding América potentially taking León’s place in the Club World Cup, but he did firmly state that multi-club ownership in Mexican football is a problem.

“What’s wrong is wrong, there’s no way around it," he said. "Multi-ownership is not right and it should be eradicated from Mexican football. City Group has investment funds with teams in different leagues. As far as I know, Mexico is the only place where the same group owns multiple teams, and that’s not OK.

"My company used to have it and was the first to get rid of multi-ownership because it knew it wasn’t right, and I still believe it isn’t. Hopefully, we can follow FIFA’s example in Mexico and eliminate it as soon as possible for the good of Mexican football. It creates a bad image because people all over the world talk about multi-ownership in Mexico, and it doesn’t reflect well on us. As an industry, we must do something to end it as quickly as possible.”

Midfielder receives promising offer from Arsenal as Odegaard plays agent

Arsenal have made an offer to one “exciting” player as they try and convince him to join Mikel Arteta’s side, and club captain Martin Odegaard is apparently doing his part to facilitate a move behind-the-scenes.

Arsenal "actively looking" for a new striker in January

Arteta reiterated the club’s public stance on signing a new forward before deadline day, speaking in his latest pre-match press conference this morning.

The Spaniard reassured Arsenal supporters that his side are still “actively” on the hunt for a new number, who can come in to alleviate the pressure on Kai Havertz’s shoulders after Gabriel Jesus’ season-ending ACL injury.

Arteta added that he often consults the Arsenal squad on potential new arrivals, so they know exactly what to expect, as he looks not to upset the applecart.

“We lost two very important players in Saka and Jesus, we lack goals and options in the front, it’s clear,” said Arteta on signing a new striker.

“If we can get the right player, that’s what we’re actively looking at. They’ve [the players] all been there, we have very short numbers for many weeks, they recognise the situation. Sometimes I consult the players on signings, especially if they know them. It’s away from the computer and the data, they can sense it, they know about them.”

RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres, Galatasaray hitman Victor Osimhen, Botafogo forward Igor Jesus and Wolves striker Matheus Cunha are all rumoured Arsenal transfer targets for January, according to various reports over the last 10 days.

Arsenal are believed to be favourites to sign Cunha as things stand, while Gunners transfer chiefs have also been internally debating the possibility of signing Sesko from RB Leipzig in the coming days (Dhamesh Sheth).

However, Leipzig managing director Marcel Schafer has attempted to pour cold water on the possibility of Sesko joining Arsenal.

Amidst their chase for a new centre-forward, Arsenal are also believed to be targeting Rosenborg’s wonderkid midfielder Sverre Nypan.

Arsenal make "promising offer" to Sverre Nypan

As per GiveMeSport, Nypan has received a “promising offer” to join Arsenal, and the Norwegian is increasingly tempted by the possibility of making a move to the Emirates Stadium.

This is being helped along by Odegaard, who’s held direct discussions with his compatriot in an attempt to convince the 18-year-old. Nypan, who bagged eight goals and 10 assists in all competitions throughout the 2024 campaign at Rosenborg, would also cost just £10 million.

The teenage sensation is a Chelsea transfer target as well, according to TEAMtalk, so Arsenal may have some competition over landing Nypan’s services.

“Sverre Nypan is extremely exciting,” said Norwegian football expert Jesper Mathisen to TV2 last year. “I get a bit of the same feeling as when I saw Martin Ødegaard break through as a boy.”

With the LA Galaxy becoming the first MLS team through the first nine games of the season without a win after having won the MLS Cup, many fans and critics alike are concerned for the team. Add USMNT legend Tony Meola to that group.

The iconic goalkeeper revealed he didn’t see this coming and admitted that despite their many injuries, he believed that the Galaxy had a good enough squad. He also added that the roster is better than other MLS sides that are winning, and the Galaxy should be doing the same.

“I’m glad you brought up Riqui Puig,” Meola said on. “I called this game this weekend, and I said on the broadcast that it’s too easy for me to say that it’s all about Riqui Puig. We knew he was going to be missing, and when I looked at the roster they put out, Paintsll is finally back, and of course, they lost Brugman, Marc Delgado, and Joveljić from that championship-winning team, and Yoshida’s still out. And I still looked at this lineup and said, they should be better than they are right now."

He added, "That lineup, that roster is better than teams that are currently winning. And I’m not sure if you buy that, but that’s how I looked at it and that’s how I feel.”

Tilak Varma: 'Praise helps self-confidence, but should also reflect in performances'

The India A player credits time with Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022 for his success in the four-dayer against New Zealand A

Daya Sagar05-Sep-2022Tilak Varma has played only five first-class games, and has just scored his first century in the format, against New Zealand A in Bengaluru. But, despite coming into the limelight at the 2022 IPL and having an impressive white-ball record overall, it’s Test cricket that he wants to play most of all.”My dream has always been to play in the whites for India,” Tilak said after scoring 121 for India A. “It’s my dream. To score a century for India A at the age of 19 in a country like India, which is full of talented players, is a matter of pride for me. In the drawn first four-dayer against New Zealand A, Tilak hit his runs off 183 balls from No. 6, with nine fours and six sixes, and stitched a partnership of 186 for the fifth wicket with Rajat Patidar (176) to help India take a lead of 171 before declaring on 571 for 6. Tilak credited his experience with Mumbai Indians at the IPL for boosting his self-confidence. Tilak and Jasprit Bumrah were the only players to feature in all 14 games for Mumbai, and Tilak was the team’s second-highest scorer with a tally of 397, while striking at 131 and averaging 36.09.It was a fair return for someone who has an average of 52.26 and strike rate of 96.43 in List A cricket and corresponding numbers of 32.41 and 136.97 in T20 cricket.”My IPL performance gave me a lot of self-confidence,” he said. “That has helped me perform well here too. But the team environment made me really comfortable. Rohit is the captain of India and such a senior player but he never made me feel like that while talking to him. He’s always ready to help on and off the field.””I make targets for every day and don’t think too far ahead”•BCCITilak earned a lot of praise during and after the IPL from former players. While Tendulkar praised his class and temperament, Sunil Gavaskar and Rohit predicted that Tilak would play for India in the near future across formats.”Your self-confidence obviously gets a boost when people like Rohit, Gavaskar sir, Sachin sir praise you,” he said. “These are good signs for me, but one also has to see how to receive such praise.”Sometimes, young players come under pressure and some get overexcited too, but as a player you have to remain balanced. Such praise should also reflect in your performances.”There are two more four-day games against New Zealand A, and then there is the Indian domestic season, which is now returning to its full calendar after truncated versions in the last two years because of Covid-19.When asked about his targets for the new season, Tilak said, “I make targets for every day and don’t think too far ahead. I attempt to get better on a day-to-day basis. My competition is not with others but with myself – how much more can I improve my game and fitness. These are the things I focus on, and benefit from.”

Fulham considering deadline-busting move for "incredible" star Silva loves

Looking to steal the headlines for the first time this summer, Fulham are now reportedly considering a move to sign an attacking reinforcement who Marco Silva already knows well.

Fulham transfer news

For much of this month, the Cottagers have been forced to focus on keeping hold of star men such as Andreas Pereira amid reported interest from Brazilian side Fluminense. Having seemingly fought off that interest, however, Silva’s side could yet welcome their first reinforcement of the transfer window and one who needs no introduction to Craven Cottage.

Whilst any move would be arriving in the dying embers, Fulham should be in no position to panic given how they’ve impressed even without further reinforcements in the last month or so. Sitting as high as ninth and in a shock race to fight for a European place in the Premier League, Silva has created an established side ready to cause plenty of upsets and he could yet get one particular reunion in pursuit of that.

According to Matt Law of The Telegraph, Fulham are now considering a move to re-sign Willian in a shock move folllowing his departure from Olympiacos to become a free at the beginning of the month.

Now 36 years old, the Brazilian has already stolen the headlines in West London on one ocassion in the past, playing a surprise starring role in the 2022/23 capaign despite initial doubts over his ability to still perform in the top flight.

Two years on, he could get the chance to prove those doubters wrong once again and play yet another starring role in Silva’s side. At such an age, however, it must be said that any stint may well be his last in the Premier League.

"Incredible" Willian could complete shock reunion

Even in a cameo role, Willian represents a player full of experience who knows exactly what it takes to push a side into the European places and earn the admiration of those at Craven Cottage. Earning plenty of praise from Silva in his last stint, the Portuguese manager told reporters as relayed by beIN Sports: “He was class. He’s a class player and he has incredible quality.

“He played with a very good intensity and it was probably one of his best games this season so far and I’m really pleased for him because of the quality he has. He did so many things. The way he created on the left was very good.

Fulham forward Willian.

“The players with the top quality can decide any moment of the game and they make the difference in football. The decisions Willian made came in the right moments and he’s a top-class player. He scored the goal because he believed he had other chances to score and I’m really pleased for him.”

In one last Premier League run, a 36-year-old Willian could bow out in perfect fashion by completing a move back to West London and back to England’s top flight.

Inspired by Dravid, Wyllie just wants to keep on batting

The 18-year-old is tipped as the next big run-scoring star in Australia cricket but likes to avoid the spotlight

Tristan Lavalette07-Oct-2022Late on day two of the Sheffield Shield match between Western Australia and New South Wales, as the shadows deepened at the WACA Ground, 18-year-old Teague Wyllie flicked a frustrated Nathan Lyon to the boundary. As his team-mates and the sparse smattering of fans collectively rose in the terraces, Wyllie walked slowly towards batting partner Matt Kelly and finally, almost reluctantly, raised his bat.In just his third first-class match, Wyllie became the youngest Shield centurion since Ricky Ponting in 1992-93. It was a feat made more impressive considering only two other batters compiled half-centuries in the bowler-dominated match, which WA won by eight wickets in a powerful launch of their title defence.”He [Wyllie] said ‘tax accountants don’t celebrate when they do their tax return so I shouldn’t celebrate scoring a hundred’,” chuckled WA captain Sam Whiteman, who spoke to ESPNcricinfo after the match. “He loves batting and is an impressive young man. He feels like he’s 28.”Related

While Wyllie’s reserved celebration caused mirth for his team-mates, it underlines his maturity beyond his age and should serve him well amid being bandied around as Australia’s next great batter. He topped Australia’s batting at the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year and was named in the tournament’s most valuable team.”A lot of the lads take the mickey out of me for not taking the helmet off but I just don’t like the attention from it,” Wyllie told reporters in Perth on Friday.”My old boy drilled into me when you get a hundred that the job is not done. So I’ve never been a massive fan of carrying-on…because I’m just trying to get the team into a good position.”His 104 off 204 balls masterclass rescued WA from a precarious 100 for 6 as the No. 5 calmly batted with the tail to lift his team to 258 and an invaluable 78-run first innings lead in the low-scoring contest.Having come through the ranks as an opener, the tall Wyllie – who stands over six foot – is already an intimidating figure at the crease but his batting is built on compact defence and eyeing the long haul. He’s perhaps a throwback to a more sedate time although can shift gears when needed. While more senior batters were undone by the seam and bounce on a tricky WACA pitch, Wyllie played straight and produced several eye-catching drives down the ground.”Test cricket is the goal and I believe it is the pinnacle when it comes to cricket,” he said. “I’ve always loved batting for a long period of time.””I’ve never been a massive fan of carrying-on…because I’m just trying to get the team into a good position”•Getty ImagesIt is little surprise then to learn who he has modelled his game on.”I idolised Rahul Dravid growing up,” Wyllie said. “He values his wicket more than anyone. Growing up I modelled my game on him a bit when it comes to valuing his wicket and batting for long periods. Kane Williamson is another who I try to learn a lot from.”Wyllie, who grew up in the regional city of Mandurah less than an hour from Perth, has long been seriously devoted to cricket having eschewed playing other sports competitively. It led to “burnout” three years ago, but Wyllie’s found a better balance as he starts his professional career and enjoys playing golf and watching TV shows when he’s not carefully honing his game. But his life has already started changing and becoming busier, as he quickly realised when he received around 500 messages from friends and family after his Shield heroics.Surrounded by a wealth of experience, including mentor Shaun Marsh, Wyllie has received a particularly wise tip to deal with his growing stardom.”I’ve spoken to a few of the senior guys…they got rid of social media. I haven’t gotten to that stage,” he said. But you feel Wyllie will handle keyboard warriors similarly to how he blunts exasperated bowlers.”I don’t go looking into social media comments because it’s just white noise and it doesn’t matter that much,” he said. “I tend to stay out of the spotlight…I love batting.”

Despite being tasked with halting Galatasaray’s domestic dominance when he arrived last summer, the 'Special One' is struggling to meet expectations. With Fenerbahce trailing their fierce rivals by five points in the Super Lig title race, questions about Mourinho’s future have grown louder. Reports suggest the 62-year-old could seriously contemplate stepping away from his role once the season concludes, opening the door to a host of potential suitors eager to secure his services.

Among those reportedly interested in Mourinho’s services are Scottish heavyweights Rangers. After parting ways with Philippe Clement, the Glasgow-based club has installed Barry Ferguson as caretaker manager until the end of the current campaign. However, they are keen on appointing a high-profile, permanent successor, and Mourinho’s name has surfaced as a dream candidate.

WHAT JOE COLE SAID

While rumours swirl about Mourinho's next destination, former Chelsea and England star Joe Cole has thrown his weight behind a Premier League return for his old boss. Speaking passionately on about Mourinho’s enduring affection for the English capital, Cole suggested that London remains a major pull factor for the Portuguese tactician.

He said: "Genuinely, I think he's a genius. I really do hope we see him in the Premier League again. He still's got it and I would love to have him back on these shows. He loves England. He loves London. Whichever club he comes in, will get a real bounce. I think Jose will stay for the next five, 10 years. But three-four years, you are going to win something, he's your man."

Mourinho is no stranger to the pressures and glories of the Premier League. Over the course of his managerial career in England, he has led Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur with considerable success. During two separate spells at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho delivered three Premier League titles, firmly establishing his legacy as one of the league’s most accomplished managers. His tenure at Manchester United brought silverware as well, including a Europa League triumph, while he took Tottenham to the Carabao Cup final.

He’s one of the best in the league: Spurs eyeing "insane" upgrade on Ange

In a season full of downs, the last week has been particularly brutal for Tottenham Hotspur.

With their Premier League campaign going about as badly as it possibly could, the Lilywhites knew that the cup competitions were their best bet for any sort of success this year.

However, within the last seven days, the North Londoners have been booted out of the League Cup at the hands of Liverpool and the FA Cup courtesy of Aston Villa, which has made Ange Postecoglou’s already difficult position appear even more untenable.

TottenhamHotspur manager Ange Postecoglou reacts after the match

The Australian has been under increasing pressure over the last few months, and based on recent reports, Daniel Levy and Co could have already identified the man they want to replace him.

Tottenham Hotspur's manager search

Now, it’s certainly true that, so far this season, Postecoglou has been outrageously unlucky with injuries, so much so that he’s barely been able to field his first-choice backline, and in recent weeks, the same could also be said for the frontline.

Micky van de Ven walks off injured for Tottenham

However, with more losses than wins in the league and now two cup exits in the same week, it would be fair to say that much of the patience people had for him is starting to wear thin, and it now appears as if the club are looking for his replacement.

According to a recent report from TEAMtalk, the game against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon will be crucial in deciding the Australian’s future, and should he lead the team to another defeat, the club has identified three potential replacements.

The first two are former Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzić and Brentford boss Thomas Frank, but perhaps the most exciting and intriguing option would be Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola.

The report claims that the Spaniard is ‘liked a lot’ by Tottenham, although given his commitment to the Cherries, getting him to N17 before the end of the season would be incredibly difficult.

However, even if they have to wait until the summer, he’d still be worth it.

Why Iraola would be a great appointment

While there are a number of reasons why Iraola would be an excellent appointment for Spurs to make in the summer, arguably the most important is that he has a track record of surpassing expectations.

For example, his first job in management saw him lead Cypriot side AEK Larnaca into the Europa League group stage for the second time in their history.

Then, in Spain, he masterminded second-tier Mirandes’ surprise run to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, and then, following that, he took Rayo Vallecano from the second tier and left them as a midtable side in La Liga when he took over at Bournemouth.

Since moving to England, the “insane” tactician, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has steered the Cherries from relegation candidates to a team pushing for European football, and one that has already beaten the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Nottingham Forest and Spurs.

Moreover, the Usurbil-born coach has the record to back up respected football analyst Ben Mattinson’s claim that he’s “one of the best in the league”.

Robertson's deal runs out in the summer of 2026 and he is hoping to sign a new one, calling on Carragher and Reds supporters to make as much noise about it as they did for Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk – and continue to do for Trent Alexander Arnold.

AdvertisementWHAT ROBERTSON SAID

Robertson joked in conversation with Carragher at a charity event: "I have only got a year left so I hope all you guys can help me with making the same noise around a new contract as you did with Mo and Virgil's. Maybe you [Carragher] can stop linking the club with other left-backs as well!

"No look, I've had eight wonderful years so far and I have a year left. I am not as young as I once was but I love this club and I have had some great memories here, so let's see what the future holds. I still believe I can still produce good performances and some really good performances and I think I have done that this season, so I still think I can produce at the top level and if I can do that then that is where I belong and hopefully I can stay here for many years to come."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Robertson's performances have not been as convincing this season, with last month's 3-2 defeat at Fulham a particularly poor day for the full-back. Liverpool have been linked with signing Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth as a replacement.
