Arsenal beaten by Bournemouth Arteta left feeling 'rage, anger, frustration'Expects response in PSG return legFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Following Bournemouth's 2-1 win at the Emirates Stadium, Arteta admitted it was exactly the opposite of what Arsenal had wanted in preparation for facing the French side in Wednesday's Champions League semi-final second leg. The Gunners must now take the taste of defeat into a game they have to win to have any chance of prevailing – they need a two-goal margin in Paris to prevail over 90 minutes, without extra-time.

The Premier League title race is over and Arsenal are highly unlikely to tumble all the way out of the top five, so the Champions League is understandably more of a priority, not least because the Gunners have never won it. But a big boost going into the second leg would have been momentum from a positive result against Bournmeouth, which they didn't achieve. It means Arteta has to look for other ways to motivate his team.

WHAT MIKEL ARTETA SAID

Arteta said to : "On whether the side have lost momentum before facing PSG: "It didn't create the right momentum. It created a lot of anger, frustration, rage, disappointment. Let's use all of that on Wednesday. That's what we have to do."

He added in his post-match press conference: "We certainly wanted to create a really good vibe, a positive result would really help us to build what we wanted towards Wednesday. So what we have created now is a lot of rage, anger, frustration and a bad feeling in the tummy. So make sure that we use that for Wednesday to have a massive performance in Paris, win the game and be in the final."

Wednesday night in Paris has the potential to define not just Arsenal's season but their history. Every other major Premier League club has won the Champions League at least once, with the Gunners coming agonisingly close in 2006 but never again since. If this season ends trophyless, it could also even see cracks in the Arteta era start to form.

BBL: Jimmy Neesham signs with Hobart Hurricanes

“A lot of people say Tasmania is a bit like a mini NZ, so I’m looking forward to getting over there”

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Dec-2022New Zealand allrounder Jimmy Neesham is set for his Big Bash League (BBL) debut after having signed with Hobart Hurricanes as a replacement player for Pakistan allrounder Faheem Ashraf who is set to be part of Pakistan’s Test series against England and New Zealand. In September earlier this year, Neesham had turned down a New Zealand central contract, committing to various T20 tournaments. Like Neesham, Trent Boult had also stepped away from his national contract to play T20 tournaments around the world, with Martin Guptill recently joining them as a T20 freelancer. A day after being released from his New Zealand contract, Guptill was announced as a replacement player for Melbourne Renegades in the upcoming BBL season. Boult (Melbourne Stars) and Colin de Grandhomme (Adelaide Strikers), who had recently retired from international cricket to pursue T20 opportunities, will also be in action in the BBL.Neesham brings with him rich T20 experience, having already played in the IPL and CPL, and recent form. He has struck at almost 185 at the death (between overs 17 and 20) in T20 cricket this year.Related

“I’m really excited to be involved with the Big Bash for the first time this year,” Neesham said.”I’ve heard great things about the Hurricanes set up, and the list this year looks incredibly strong, so to be able to play even a small part in what I hope will be a successful tournament for the franchise is a really great opportunity for me.”A lot of people say Tasmania is a bit like a mini New Zealand, so I’m looking forward to getting over there, meeting the guys, and playing the role that is asked of me for the team.”The BBL, which will run from December 13 to February 4, will clash with the Super Smash, New Zealand domestic T20 competition, and the ongoing Lanka Premier League (LPL).

Tottenham ready to offer £15m deal to sign £104k-p/w ace in summer swoop

Despite welcoming Kevin Danso during the January transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur are now reportedly ready to offer a deal worth £15m to sign another new centre-back this summer.

Tottenham transfer news

Even after the January transfer window, Spurs are in desperate need for further reinforcements when the summer transfer window arrives. Ange Postecoglou has been forced to create internal solutions amid an injury crisis this season and only managed to welcome the likes of James Maddison back to his side in an important 1-0 victory over Manchester United last time out.

Speaking about his side’s injuries following comparisons with Manchester United, Postecoglou told reporters after Spurs’ victory: “Man Utd with many injured players? If I check my office, I don’t have any sympathy cards from other coaches

“He (Amorim)’s had to play players out of position and have kids on the bench. Welcome to my world. It’s one game. Try doing that for two months.”

In a season full of frustration, it’s chairman Daniel Levy who has found himself at the centre of blame and he must now make up for things in the summer transfer window.

According to Roma Forever, Tottenham are now ready to offer an €18m (£15m) deal to sign Gianluca Mancini from AS Roma in an attempt to add further depth to their backline this summer.

Having signed Danso in January, the Lilywhites at least got a head start on their pursuit of further depth, but one will not be enough amid the consistent injury issues of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

It’s become clear as the campaign has progressed that Postecoglou may well need to find a fresh partnership altogether, particularly as Van de Ven continues to struggle on the comeback front.

Mancini could end Tottenham's struggles

Spurs are desperate for a summer reset which could see as many as five natural centre-backs all compete for a place under Postecoglou if Mancini joins Danso, Romero, Van de Ven and Radu Dragusin. It’s the type of competition that the Australian so desperately needs and the type which could see the aforementioned Roma man come out on top next to Romero.

Whilst Romero is more robust, as the numbers suggest, Mancini’s ability to progress play is a crucial trait to hold under Postecoglou and would quickly see him rise up the pecking order in North London.

Earning a reported £104,000-a-week at Roma, it will be interesting to see if Mancini is lured away from the Italian club and become the latest central defender tasked with solving Spurs’ problems.

For £15m, meanwhile, Spurs would be getting a summer bargain in the form of an experienced defender. With Levy under mounting pressure too, he could certainly do with getting things right on the transfer front.

Leeds could make "statement signing" in £34m "beast", claims Paul Robinson

Leeds United could make a “statement signing” by bringing in a £34m striker this summer, according to former goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

Leeds pursuing Premier League goalscorer

Joel Piroe has been in fine form in the Championship this season, having scored 15 goals, the joint-highest in the second tier, but Leeds are believed to be searching for a new striker, as promotion to the Premier League now beckons.

One target they have in mind is Southampton’s Cameron Archer, who is said to be keen on a move to Elland Road this summer, with the Saints almost certain to be relegated from the top flight.

The 49ers are also said to be looking at AC Milan striker Tammy Abraham, who is currently out on loan at AS Roma, with the former Chelsea man eyeing a return to the Premier League.

Leeds now likely to move for "excellent" £20m forward if they win promotion

The Whites are now in a very strong position to be promoted from the Championship.

2 ByDominic Lund Feb 26, 2025

A whole host of English clubs are queuing up for Abraham, who cost Roma £34m in August 2021, which means it could be difficult to get a deal done, but Robinson has recently indicated Leeds should go all out to sign the striker.

The former goalkeeper said: “Joel Piroe plays up there. He’s led the line. He’s got the goals this season. But actually, you look as an out-and-out recognised number nine, somebody like Tammy Abraham would be a great fit.

“He’s on loan at the moment, but his contract’s up at the end of the season. So if he’s going out on loan now with his contract up at the end of the season, you would think he’s got no future at his parent club. So a signing like that would be a statement signing for Leeds as well because he’s a quality player in an area of the field that Leeds need.”

Abraham could be a top signing for Leeds

It hasn’t been the best of seasons for the Roma forward out on loan at Milan, but he has still managed to score eight goals in all competitions, including two in the Champions League, and his top-level pedigree means he could be a success at Elland Road.

The 27-year-old, who has been lauded as a “beast”, has also impressed in the Premier League in the past, scoring a total of 26 goals in England’s top tier, including 15 in one season for Chelsea during the 2019-20 campaign.

AC Milan'sTammyAbraham

It may be difficult to win the race for the English forward, given the level of interest, but he is the type of signing Leeds need to make if they are promoted this season and want to avoid an instant return to the Championship.

Although Piroe has been very impressive this season, the Dutchman is unproven at Premier League level, and it’s not a guarantee he will hit the ground running, while Abraham has a proven track record of scoring goals in the top flight.

French publication have dropped a bombshell right before Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal's Champions League semi-final second leg clash this week, revealing that the Ligue 1 giants considered appointing Arteta as their head coach in the recent past.

The report from L'Equipe claimed that after the sacking of Christophe Galtier in the summer of 2023, PSG curated a shortlist of possible managerial candidates, with Arsenal boss Arteta one of the names on the list. The Spaniard spent the 2001-02 season on loan at PSG in the initial days of his playing career. However, Les Parisiens eventually ended up acquiring Luis Enrique's services, who is on course to guide PSG to a terrific quadruple, should they win the Champions League and Coupe de France titles.

DID YOU KNOW?

Although Arteta was reportedly on a final shortlist and held in high regard by some figures at QSI (PSG's owners) due to his past as a former PSG player, talks over a potential move to Parc des Princes never progressed beyond preliminary discussions. Club sources have since dismissed claims of serious interest, insisting that Luis Enrique was their first-choice candidate from the outset.

The two European heavyweights will meet in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final on Wednesday, May 7, at Parc des Princes, with the hosts carrying a slender 1-0 advantage thanks to Ousmane Dembele's strike at the Emirates in the first leg. While Luis Enrique's troops have already secured the Ligue 1 title, Arsenal will have to wait another year to lay their hands on the English top-flight trophy, which was won by Liverpool this season.

Russell's fifty counters Neser's hat-trick as Renegades seal third straight win

Peirson’s unbeaten 45 also in vain as Heat suffer second loss against Renegades

Tristan Lavalette21-Dec-2022
Michael Neser marked his BBL return with a hat-trick before a resurgent Melbourne Renegades rode an outrageous counterattack from Andre Russell to defeat Brisbane Heat once again. On a tricky surface at Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium, Renegades were in major trouble in their chase of 138 after Neser’s heroics. But Russell turned the match on its head with 57 off 42 balls punctuated by six mighty sixes. In a see-saw finish, continuing a string of tight finishes to start BBL12, a scratchy Aaron Finch held his nerve to hit the winning boundary in the final over as Renegades celebrated their third straight win to start the season.Heat are winless having lost both their games to Renegades.Neser returns to the BBL in style
Relieved of Test duties, Neser enjoyed his return to the BBL with a wicket first ball to dismiss Sam Harper, who flicked a leg-stump half-volley straight to the fielder inside the ring. But there was nothing fortuitous when Neser found the perfect line and length to graze the edge of Jake Fraser-McGurk’s bat in the last ball of the first over. With his next ball, in the third over, Neser bowled Renegades’ captain Nic Maddison, who chopped onto his stumps, before claiming a hat-trick in stunning style by rattling the stumps after Jonathan Wells didn’t play a shot.Bowling with unrelenting accuracy, much like his impressive performance against West Indies in the Adelaide Test, Neser was unplayable until Russell dented his figures. It might be a different format but Neser showed why he is unlucky not to be a regular member of Australia’s stacked pace attack in Test cricket. In a silver lining, he produced just the ninth BBL hat-trick.Dre Russ launches audacious counterattack
At 9 for 4, there were shades of Sydney Thunder’s embarrassing all out 15 but Russell made a mockery of conditions and Renegades’ precarious position. He smashed three sixes off a red-hot Neser to change the complexion of the game within minutes.Heat’s captain Jimmy Peirson gambled with spinner Mitchell Swepson in the sixth over and Russell promptly greeted him with a massive six over long-on. It was either feast or famine for the West Indian, whose first four scoring shots were sixes. With brute power, Russell wound the clock back to notch up his first BBL half-century in his 25th innings. But he appeared to have suffered a wrist injury and wasn’t quite the same as his belligerent innings came to an end in the 15th over amid the power surge. In the midst of a brief four match-stint before playing in the UAE’s inaugural ILT20 league, Russell made a big impact having previously expressed disappointment of being overlooked during the BBL draft.Renegades recruit Rogers menaces on tricky surface
After Heat elected to bat, Maddinson gave the new ball to spinners Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who was playing against his old side, and Akeal Hosein. It proved a masterstroke as they removed big-hitting Max Bryant and Colin Munro, but Renegades’ attack was soon thwarted by Matthew Renshaw and Sam Billings.Straight after the drinks break, seamer Tom Rogers delivered by removing Billings with a sharp delivery to catch the edge and later in the over he bowled Renshaw, who played on after failing to cope with the extra bounce.Rogers continued to extract menacing bounce from the surface, with one rising delivery hitting Peirson on the back of the neck, and added two more wickets to his career-best BBL performance.Renegades have had a revival so far this season with the recruitment of Rogers proving key. The 28-year-old enjoyed a breakout last season with Hobart Hurricanes, where he claimed 20 wickets. He’s now taken seven wickets in three games this season and beefed up Renegades’ attack along with Mujeeb and left-arm spinner Hosein, who finished with three wickets and also starred with the bat.Heat’s top-order troubles
Life without Chris Lynn has proven tough for Heat after two modest batting efforts against Renegades. They hoped the inclusion of Renshaw would prove a tonic after he missed the opener due to the birth of his first child. The in-form Renshaw has made a strong start to the domestic season in the longer formats and he looked composed in his BBL season debut in a steady partnership with Billings. Renshaw and Billings, however, couldn’t capitalise on their platform leaving Heat in a hole before Peirson came to the rescue with a flurry of late boundaries. But their total ultimately proved not enough, leaving Heat’s hierarchy needing to ponder how to get their batting order firing.

Can England end ODI rut with series on the line?

The visitors have lost their last four ODIs, and may need to tailor their approach to suit a tricky Bloemfontein surface

Firdose Moonda28-Jan-2023Big picture: Can England bounce back on sticky Bloemfontein surface?
South Africa ticked an important box in their bid to automatically qualify for the 2023 World Cup with victory in the first ODI on Friday night. Even if they go on to lose the series, that one win is enough to keep their hopes of finishing in the World Cup Super League top eight alive. Though they will have to beat Netherlands 2-0 and hope other results go their way, Friday’s win has allowed them to keep their fate in their own hands. Five wins will guarantee them a spot in India, even though they’ve emphasised that results are not the main focus right now. That may seem like a strange thing to say when their next four ODIs have so much riding on them but South Africa are concentrating more on building a white-ball identity after losing it in the last few years. The tenets of the new approach are not yet clear but it seems to be built on the principle of bouncebackability that has become synonymous with the South African DNA. Even when they looked 50 runs short with the bat after England stormed to 146 without loss inside 20 overs in a chase of 299, South Africa’s bowlers won them the game. The result asked familiar questions of South Africa: how wide is the gulf between their batters and bowlers? And are their batters keeping up with modern scoring rates? The answer to the latter might be no, but it was enough to beat the World Cup holders, so there can hardly be much complaining with that.England, too, are still working out their best formula as they look for ways to climb out of their rough patch. They’ve lost their last four ODIs but all of those matches have been squeezed into the calendar at what seems the most inopportune time. The Australia matches came off the back of their T20 World Cup win and these South Africa ones – postponed from 2020 – are in the midst of two franchise tournaments involving England players and with their Test squad en route to New Zealand. In fact, Test captain and recent ODI retiree Ben Stokes cited the schedule as the single biggest issue in England’s ODI set-up but they won’t want to use that as too much of an excuse.

Instead, they’ll look for ways to make their usually aggressive batting style more successful on a surface not always suited to free-flowing run-scoring. Bloemfontein’s pitches are known to be slightly sticky and get more challenging to bat on as the ball gets older and softer. England’s power game is not in doubt but the way they bottled Friday’s chase suggests there’s work to be done in the middle order. With both teams figuring out their batting and boasting strong attacks, the Bloemfontein crowd are in for a treat and word is that many more of them are expected for Sunday’s match. It’s their last chance to see international cricket this summer and remind Cricket South Africa of their relevance to their country’s cricket circuit, with no SA20 team based in the Free State.Form guide

England: LLLLWJofra Archer’s workload will be managed carefully as he continues his return to international cricket•Getty ImagesIn the spotlight: Sisanda Magala and Sam Curran
Sisanda Magala put in his best performance in national colours on Friday, when he broke the opening stand that threatened to turn the match into a one-sided contest in England’s favour and then took two more wickets to give South Africa an advantage. Magala, who is usually a new-ball bowler, adapted well to being used as fourth change, and was particularly effective with the bouncer. While South Africa are not short of options in the seam-bowling department, he adds to the variety of the attack and could use the rest of the series to push for a more permanent white-ball place. It’s been a challenging few weeks in South Africa for Sam Curran, who has not lit up the SA20 in the way his IPL price tag suggested he might. Curran has scored 67 runs in seven innings for MI Cape Town and taken three wickets in the tournament but he showed signs of a return to wicket-taking ways in the first ODI. Like Magala, Curran’s use of the short and slower ball was a surprise factor for the batters and he dismissed all three of South Africa’s main threats: Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller. He’ll be keen to add a big batting performance to that to underline his all-round value as England seek to square the series.Team news: Archer, Parnell could be rested
Temba Bavuma’s move to the opening berth will likely keep Janneman Malan and Reeza Hendricks on the bench for now. Although their bowlers won them the first ODI, South Africa may consider some changes in the attack. Tabraiz Shamsi had a poor outing on Friday and may make way for Keshav Maharaj while South Africa may want to see what Marco Jansen can do on a benign track in place of Wayne Parnell.South Africa: 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Temba Bavuma (capt), Rassie van der Dussen, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Heinrich Klaasen, 6 David Miller, 7 Wayne Parnell/Marco Jansen, 8 Sisanda Magala, 9 Keshav Maharaj, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Anrich NortjeAny changes to England’s line-up will depend on the health of Phil Salt, who sat out the series-opener with the illness that has also kept him out of the SA20. With Archer’s return to international cricket being managed carefully, he may make way for Reece Topley. Chris Woakes may get a game ahead of Olly Stone.England: 1 Jason Roy, 2 Dawid Malan, 3 Ben Duckett, 4 Harry Brook, 5 Jos Buttler (capt & wk), 6 Moeen Ali, 7 Sam Curran, 8 David Willey, 9 Jofra Archer/Reece Topley, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Chris Woakes/Olly Stone.Pitch and conditions: Expect a flat and slow surface
Sunday’s match will be played on a fresh strip, more towards the middle of the square, but don’t expect too much more life. Flat and relatively slow could mean run-scoring proceeds much like it did on Friday: quickly with the new ball, and slightly more tricky later on. There will also be the added challenge of the heat. It’s a day game, so players will be under 32-degree sun for most of the encounter.Stats and trivia
Before Friday, England were the only one of the 10 teams South Africa had played against in Bloemfontein that they had not beaten. They have played each other five times at the venue, England have won three, South Africa one, and one match has been tied. England and South Africa have drawn their last two ODI series (in 2022 and 2020), and England won the previous two. South Africa have not beaten England in an ODI series since 2016. Wayne Parnell needs three wickets to reach 100 ODI wickets. He will be the 13th South Africa to reach the milestone. Quotes
“Whenever you beat England, it gives you great confidence. They’re world champions and the way they have been playing over the last few years, it’s always a feather in our cap as a team. We’re not really thinking about qualification. If we need to go qualify, we’ll go qualify; if not, and we end up winning two or three of these last games, then that’s also okay. We’ll take it game by game. The resolve the guys showed today – there’s been a lot happening over the last two weeks with the SA20 – the way the guys came out and refocused on what we want to achieve this week is unbelievable.”
“From my point of view, it’s giving him a bit of time. It’s a big, big step-up to come and bowl 10 overs in international cricket, which adds a higher level of intensity again. He’s going to get better and better and better the more games he plays.”
Jos Buttler believes Jofra Archer will only improve as he continues his return to international cricket after almost two years on the sidelines

Ipswich loan flop who left in 2022 is now a bigger talent than Philogene

It’s been just over a month since the transfer window slammed shut, and in a bid to stave off relegation, Ipswich Town were one of the busier clubs in the Premier League.

Kieran McKenna’s side signed Ben Godfrey and Julio Enciso on loan, while Alex Palmer and Jaden Philogene put pen to paper on permanent deals.

The latter cost the Tractor Boys around £20m from Aston Villa, and while it is probably too early to say with any absolute certainty whether he’ll be a hit, he has been relativley impressive.

That said, one of the club’s former loan flops, who left in 2022, could be described as an even bigger talent, and so far this season, he’s managed to outscore the incredible Liam Delap.

Why Ipswich signed Philogene

So, when it came to reinforcing the squad in the winter market, why did Ipswich turn their attention to Philogene of all players?

Well, there are likely two key, intertwined reasons, with the first being that he looked like a real talent when he played regular football last season.

For example, in 32 appearances for Hull City, totalling 2811 minutes, the 23-year-old ace scored 12 goals – one of which was nominated for the Puskas award – and provided six assists.

That means the former Villa gem averaged a goal involvement every 1.77 games, or every 156.16 minutes, and so far this year, he’s scored three goals in seven appearances.

The second reason the Suffolk side were willing to splash the cash on him is that, at just 23 years old, there is still plenty of time for the winger to improve and if the club are to be relegated this year, they have a very sellable asset or someone to build around in the second tier.

In all, Philogene looks like he was a great purchase for Ipswich and a special talent who could develop into something special, but a former loan flop who left Portman Road in 2022 might be an even bigger talent.

The Ipswich loan flop who could be a bigger talent than Philogene

Ipswich have had their fair share of loan flops, who have then gone on to prove their worth elsewhere, from Chris Wood to Andros Townsend.

It looks like Louie Barry will be another such case, as when he left the club in January 2022, just five months after joining, he did so with a dismal tally of no goals or assists in six first-team appearances.

A few more lacklustre loan spells followed until the talented forward – who was a Barcelona youth player for a time – joined Stockport County on loan for the 23/24 season, where he racked up an impressive haul of nine goals and four assists in 22 games in a campaign cut short by injury.

The Englishman returned to the now League One outfit on loan this season, and to say he exceeded expectations would be a colossal understatement.

In just 24 appearances, totalling 1812 minutes, the “incredible” talent, as dubbed by England international Declan Rice, scored 16 goals and provided three assists.

That comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.26 games, or every 95.36 minutes, and means he’s been more productive than Philogene and outscored Delap, who has ten goals and two assists in 30 games this year.

Such a sensational level of output saw Villa recall the 21-year-old and send him on loan to Hull for the rest of the season, but a serious knee injury late last month saw him return to Villa Park after just four appearances and could see him sit out the rest of the campaign.

Ultimately, Ipswich appear to have a potential star on their hands in Philogene, but from how unstoppable he was for Stockport and Villa’s decision to keep and not sell him, an argument could be made that Barry is an even bigger talent.

Davies played 142 games and scored 37 goals for Wrexham as he helped them win the National League in 2023 and earn promotion to League One in 2024. But following their promotion to the Championship, he is surplus to requirements – which appears to also be the case for team-mate Steven Fletcher. Following the latest Owners Assembly in Liga MX, it was officially announced that the Gallos Blancos de Querétaro have entered the process of being sold, a move seen as a key step toward reducing multi-club ownership in Mexican football.

The potential buyer is a U.S.-based investment group headed by Marc Spiegel, who now awaits approval from Mexico’s Federal Economic Competition Commission (COFECE) to finalize the deal.

Liga MX President Mikel Arriola confirmed the news, emphasizing the international interest the league continues to generate.

"We received Querétaro’s update very positively, as it shows negotiations have been ongoing for a considerable time. If all entry requirements are met, we’re optimistic about a successful financial closing under very good conditions. This speaks to the rising value of Mexican clubs on a global scale," Arriola said.

He added that the sale would be beneficial not only as progress toward a more transparent league structure, but also as a signal of growing appeal to international investors. While sale figures aren't confirmed, it was reported that Caliente, the owner of the team, put a price tag of $35 million for the club.

The transaction would put an end to one of Liga MX’s most scrutinized cases of multi-ownership. Grupo Caliente, which also owns Xolos de Tijuana, took control of Querétaro in 2022 following the violent incidents that occurred during a match against Atlas at Estadio Corregidora.

Liga MX president Mikel Arriola emphasized the league's continued growth, both in stadium attendance and broadcast reach, following the conclusion of the Clausura 2025 tournament. "Liga MX closes the season with strong numbers – an average of 22,328 fans per match, totaling nearly four million attendees over the course of the championship, a four percent increase from the previous season," Arriola said.

He also noted that television audiences remain robust: "We’re averaging nearly seven million viewers per match. While the final’s rankings are not in yet, they are expected to fall within that same range, which underscores the consumer impact and relevance of Liga MX."
