Chennai Super Kings win run-fest despite Maxwell, du Plessis fireworks

Conway and Dube made merry as well as a record-equalling 33 sixes were hit at the Chinnaswamy

Are RCB over-reliant on their top-three?

In February earlier this year Faf du Plessis was back in yellow, leading Jo’burg Super Kings to the inaugural SA20 semi-finals along with coach Stephen Fleming. Two months on in the IPL, du Plessis, in red and gold, launched an audacious assault with Glenn Maxwell as Royal Challengers Bangalore threatened to mow down 227 against Fleming and MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.Kohli fined 10% of his match fee

Virat Kohli was fined for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during RCB’s fixture against CSK on Monday. “Kohli admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 of the Code of Conduct,” said an IPL release. The statement did not go into details about the incident. “For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” the release further added.

After Super Kings had posted 226 for 6 on the back of Devon Conway’s 45-ball 83 and Shivam Dube’s 27-ball 52, they struck early through their Impact Player Akash Singh to dismiss Virat Kohli for 6 in the first over. Mahipal Lomror then fell to Tushar Deshpande in the next over, but du Plessis and Maxwell then tore into Super Kings’ inexperienced seamers to power them to 75 for 2 in the powerplay.Royal Challengers doubled that score by the 14th over, with du Plessis – bruised rib and all – riding his luck to push them even further ahead. Du Plessis had been dropped on 0, by Dhoni behind the stumps, and then on 52 by Maheesh Theekshana off his own bowling. Super Kings dropped two more catches in a lax fielding effort, but late wickets and nifty variations from the Sri Lankan pair of Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana saved the day for them.Theekshana had got rid of Maxwell for 76 off 36 balls with a fizzing 104kph carrom ball in a boundary-less over. Pathirana, who had been taken for 26 off ten balls from Maxwell, had Shahbaz Ahmed holing out in an 18th over that cost just runs to go with that wicket.Royal Challengers’ Impact Player Suyash Prabhudessai then heaved Deshpande for six in the 19th over, but Pathirana successfully defended 18 off the final over with his slingy, on-pace yorkers and slower cutters. He had Prabhudessai caught at deep midwicket last ball with his bowling coach Dwayne Bravo applauding him from the dugout.Conway, Rahane turn up the tempoMohammed Siraj excelled in the powerplay once again, giving up just six runs in his two overs while claiming the wicket of Ruturaj Gaikwad for 3. Conway and Ajinkya Rahane, too, had started slowly, but they turned up the tempo in the fifth over, bowled by rookie seamer Vyshak Vijaykumar. Conway manufactured a scooped four while Rahane hit the roof of the Chinnaswamy Stadium with a 91-metre six.Rahane then cracked Wayne Parnell for 4,6,4 in the last over of the powerplay, taking Super Kings up to 53 for 1 in six overs. He tried to keep up the attacking intent against Wanindu Hasaranga, but the wristspinner bested him with a wrong’un.3:07

Jaffer: Feeling secure at CSK has probably helped Rahane

Dube dazzles Hasaranga bowled only two overs and didn’t return after dismissing Rahane because Super Kings had promoted their left-handed spin-hitter Dube to No.4 once again. Royal Challengers matched Dube up with Maxwell, but he got going by launching his own six into the roof of the ground.Conway brought up back-to-back half-centuries and looked good for a maiden IPL hundred, but Harshal Patel eventually cleaned him up for 83 with a dipping yorker. With Royal Challengers not having an out-and-out fast bowler in their ranks, Dube continued to find or clear the boundary. He charged to a 25-ball fifty before Parnell had him holing out in the 17th over. The drama at the deathDespite the loss of Ambati Rayudu in the next over, Super Kings seemed on track for a total of 230. Siraj, however, nailed his wide yorkers in the 19th over that cost ten runs.Harshal started the final over, which was closed out by stand-in captain Maxwell; du Plessis was off the field during that time because of a side strain. After Harshal bowled two beamers, he had to be taken out of the attack. Maxwell brought himself into the attack, ahead of Hasaranga, and conceded nine runs, including a wide, for the wicket of Ravindra Jadeja off the last four balls.Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell controlled the chase after the early wickets•Associated PressThe du Plessis-Maxwell showRoyal Challengers were two down in two overs, but they still flew out of the blocks, thanks to du Plessis and Maxwell. They played to their strengths, with du Plessis taking down pace and Maxwell spin. Du Plessis was responsible for 45 of the 75 runs Royal Challengers had scored in the powerplay.Maxwell then took centrestage, lining up both Jadeja and Theekshana. Maxwell didn’t spare Pathirana either after the powerplay, shanking him for a 94-metre six over square leg.The pair took their team to 141 off 2 in 12 overs. Eighty-six from eight overs is a manageable ask at the Chinnaswamy, but Theekshana had Maxwell skying behind to set the scene for Super Kings’ comeback.

Pathirana steps upDinesh Karthik then played out the spinners and took the game deep with his 14-ball 28. By the time Karthik was out, Royal Challengers needed 35 off 18 balls. Pathirana would bowl two of those.Super Kings had opted against rushing Pathirana back into action because he had just recovered from Covid-19. But with Sisanda Magala also joining their injury list, they threw Pathirana into the mix on an easy-paced Chinnaswamy track. After taking a pasting in the early exchanges, he showed excellent control with his variations, showing why Super Kings were interested in signing him up even before he had played the Lanka Premier League in Sri Lanka. In an IPL game where a record-equalling 33 sixes were hit, Pathirana held his nerve to drag Super Kings back into the top half of the standings.

Real Madrid now targeting "elite" Man Utd star demanding £160k-p/w pay rise

As Manchester United go in search of the funds needed to rebuild Ruben Amorim’s side, Real Madrid could reportedly make their move to sign one of their most promising players.

Real Madrid eyeing top Man Utd talent

It’s been a mixed week for the Red Devils. On the pitch, they were excellent and enjoyed one of their best performance under Amorim against Real Sociedad. Away from the action, however, Sir Jim Ratcliffe was doing them no favours in his interview with Gary Neville, stealing plenty of headlines for all the wrong reasons. Then of course, a day later, the British billionaire announced plans to build the new Old Trafford – again splitting opinions.

The headlines are unlikely to stop there, either, as the summer approaches and Manchester United eye a much-needed rebuild which will need sacrifices along the way. Among those who could leave include Marcus Rashford, who’s currently on loan at Aston Villa, and one other academy graduate amid impressive interest.

According to reports in Spain, Real Madrid are now targeting a move to sign Kobbie Mainoo from Manchester United this summer with the midfielder reportedly set to reject a new contract offer from the Red Devils.

Amorim has unearthed the new Rashford at Man Utd & it's not Garnacho

Manchester United may have stumbled across a gem who could replicate Marcus Rashford.

ByEthan Lamb Mar 15, 2025

The news also follows reports that Mainoo is demanding as much as £180,000-a-week to stay put at Old Trafford, which would be a £160,000-a-week pay rise from his current salary.

With Ratcliffe already cutting costs, Mainoo’s wage demand is one that Manchester United may not be able to reach and may not want to reach for a player who is still just 19 years old.

Man Utd must remain firm on Mainoo stance

There’s no doubt that Mainoo is a player full of potential. He’s proved that much since bursting onto the scene and scoring the winning goal against Manchester City in last season’s FA Cup final. But at 19 years old, Manchester United should not accept his reported wage demands. Ratcliffe simply cannot continue to cut costs for those outside of the playing staff and then reward what is still a failing group of players – Mainoo included.

Stuck at a crossroads, the Red Devils could have little choice but to cash-in on their young midfielder, who was dubbed “elite” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig in August. What that would at least do, however, is hand Amorim and Manchester United some much-needed funds for reinforcements of their own.

It’s then that the former Sporting Club boss could mark his own stamp on the current side once and for all, welcoming players who suit his 3-4-2-1 system at Old Trafford.

Amid so many moving parts, Manchester United – as ever – will be among the most interesting sides to watch this summer. The same, meanwhile, can be said for Mainoo as he potentially becomes the latest player to move on.

Arsenal have done "more work" on "sensational" £90k-p/w forward Berta wants

Arsenal have done “more work” than any other suitors on a popular striker target, who new sporting director Andrea Berta is keen to sign, according to a new report.

Berta ready to put his imprint on Arsenal

Edu’s unexpected departure as Arsenal’s sporting director late last year sent shockwaves through the club, with many fans wondering how the club would move forward without the man partly responsible for the club’s resurgence in recent years.

Well, now they have the answer. On Sunday, Andrea Berta was confirmed as Arsenal’s new sporting director, ushering in an exciting new era at the Emirates Stadium.

Berta arrives in North London with a wealth of experience, having worked in technical roles for Italian sides Carpenedolo, Parma and Genoa and, most recently, Atlético Madrid, where he spent almost 12 years and played a major role in building the teams which won La Liga in both 2013/14 and 2020/21.

In his first interview following his appointing, Berta said that he can’t wait to help shape Arsenal’s future.

“I have watched with great interest the way Arsenal has evolved in recent years and I have admired the hard work that has gone into re-establishing the club as a major force in European football with a passionate following around the world,” he said.

“The club has great values and a rich history, and I am looking forward to playing my part in shaping a successful future with a great team. I cannot wait to get started in my new role and I am really looking forward to experiencing my first game at Emirates Stadium together with our supporters.”

Berta wants Cunha as Gunners begin work on signing

Having signed the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Rodri and Jan Oblak for Atleti over the years, Berta is now looking to get to work quickly at Arsenal, and reportedly already has his eye on a summer signing in the form of Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha.

Described as “absolutely sensational” by former Manchester City star turned pundit Micah Richards, Cunha, who has been Wolves’ standout player this season, scoring 15 goals in all competitions, has been a target for Arsenal for some time, with the Gunners wanting him in January but being put off by Wolves’ £80 million asking price.

ByTom Cunningham Mar 28, 2025

According to a new report from TEAMtalk, however, the Brazil international will be available for a much lower price in the summer, and Arsenal have done “more work” on signing Cunha than his other suitors. He is now “under serious consideration” by Berta.

The publication reports that the Gunners will face competition from Liverpool for the £90k per week star, with the Merseyside club having already been in contact to ask about the conditions of a deal for Cunha and whether he would be interested in a switch to Anfield.

Nottingham Forest are also reported to be plotting a bold move for the talented forward, and believe securing a Champions League spot would significantly boost their chances of sealing the deal.

Nathan Sowter, Graham Clark come back to haunt Northamptonshire

Composed Durham strengthen quarter-finals credentials with fourth win of season

ECB Reporters Network06-Jun-2023 Durham 162 for 6 (Clark 55, Heldreich 3-36) beat Northamptonshire 161 for 7 (Gay 53, Sowter 4-14) by four wicketsNathan Sowter and Graham Clark haunted Northamptonshire Steelbacks for the second time in the Vitality Blast this season after guiding Durham to a four-wicket win at Seat Unique Riverside.Sowter followed his figures of 5 for 15 against the Steelbacks in the reverse fixture with another brilliant spell of 4 for 14 to limit the visitors to 161 for 7 from their 20 overs. Emilio Gay top-scored with a career-best 53, but he lacked support from the rest of the line-up to produce a daunting total for the hosts to chase.Clark delivered an emphatic performance at the top of the innings against the Steelbacks following his century from the opener. His knock of 55 provided the foundation for the chase that was threatened by three wickets from Freddie Heldreich. But, Durham held their composure to strengthen their credentials for a quarter-final place with their fourth win of the season. The visitors solidly started in the powerplay without dominating the Durham attack. Gay was the early pacesetter, impressing with his striking down the ground, including back-to-back boundaries against Luke Robinson. Chris Lynn made a slow start to his knock but brought up the fifty stand with a fine cut behind point to the fence. After clearing the rope for the first time, the Australian was starting to find his range, only to fall for 24 to a brilliant diving catch from Liam Trevaskis at long-off to hand Sowter the breakthrough. Sowter was then responsible for the second wicket as Josh Cobb got himself in a mighty tangle after surviving an lbw shout and was run out by Ashton Turner.Gay continued to play the anchor role and brought up his maiden T20 fifty from 38 balls to position his side for a late surge over the 150-run mark. But Sowter continued to torment the Steelbacks line-up after taking five wickets in the reverse fixture. He prised out David Willey and bowled Saif Zaib to put the clamps on the visitors. The leg-spinner ended his spell with his fourth scalp as Gay was caught on the boundary for 53, taking his ninth wicket in two games against Northants for the cost of just 29 runs. The Steelbacks scrambled to a competitive total of 161 for 7 courtesy of useful late cameos from AJ Tye and Tom Taylor.Northants missed a golden opportunity to set the Durham chase back in the second over when Taylor put down a simple chance at short midwicket to dismiss Alex Lees. The Durham skipper and Clark surged past their fifty partnership at the end of the powerplay, moving ahead of the required rate courtesy of a huge six by the latter.Heldreich earned brief respite for the visitors by breaking the stand with his first ball, pinning Lees lbw for 30.Clark followed in the footsteps of his team-mate Sowter by defying the Steelbacks again. After scoring his maiden T20 century at Wantage Road in the first match of the competition, he proved equally destructive on home soil, powering his way to fifty from 25 balls.Heldreich kept the visitors in with a shout of hauling back the hosts working in tandem with a miserly spell from Saif Zaib, removing Michael Jones and the key wicket of Clark for 55. Zaib then cranked up the pressure when Ollie Robinson was caught on the fence, ending his four-over spell for one for 17.Turner eased the tension for the hosts and all but carried them over the line with a vital knock of 31 from 18. Liam Trevaskis wrapped up proceedings by smashing Tye over the rope before the contest was ended by a wide.

For now, the teenage wonderkid is starring with 19 on his back. In many ways he has made that number his own after becoming a global superstar at just 17 years of age. There is already talk of him challenging for the Ballon d’Or in 2025.

There is, however, something special about donning No.10 in Catalunya. Argentine icon Messi once wore that jersey with distinction, becoming a multiple Golden Ball winner and all-time great during his record-shattering spell at Camp Nou.

DID YOU KNOW?

It has been suggested that Yamal – who is considered to be the natural heir to his fellow La Masia graduate – could be handed a historic shirt this summer as Ansu Fati, who has filled that jersey since Messi departed in 2021, moves on.

Yamal is not paying too much attention to that debate, having already had to contend with comparisons to Messi since bursting onto the senior scene at 15, and told of becoming Barca’s new No.10: “At the moment, Ansu has it. I wear number 19 and I really like it; it's brought me luck. Is there more pressure to play with number 10? When I go to shoot at goal, I'm not going to think about what number I'm wearing.”

Chelsea could offer Chalobah or Mudryk in part-exchange bid for £50m defender

Chelsea chiefs are prepared to bid for a key defensive target this summer, and they could offer one of Trevoh Chalobah or Mykhailo Mudryk in a part-exchange bid for his signature.

Chalobah and Mudryk face uncertain Chelsea futures

Both Chalobah and Mudryk face uncertain futures at Stamford Bridge under Enzo Maresca, but for different reasons.

The former, who was left out of Chelsea’s pre-season summer tour just prior to the beginning of the season, initially found himself out of Maresca’s plans, and subsequently made a move to Crystal Palace on loan.

However, their glaring need for another centre-back option midway through the Premier League campaign prompted Chelsea to activate the recall clause in his temporary deal at Selhurst Park, with Chalobah re-joining Maresca’s squad and playing a role in the first-team.

This may not be the case next season, though, as it is reported that Chelsea are looking to significantly invest in signing another high-profile centre-back this summer, with Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen and Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi among their rumoured targets, so Chalobah’s future remains in doubt.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehiin action

Meanwhile, winger Mudryk recently failed a drugs test, having tested positive for Meldonium late last year. The Ukraine international has been provisionally suspended since the substance was found in his system, and an extensive investigation surrounding this incident remains ongoing.

The 24-year-old is also being linked with a Chelsea exit as a result, with La Liga side Sevilla reportedly interested in signing Mudryk and handing him a lifeline away from the English capital.

With both Chalobah and Mudryk appearing unlikely to hold any major presence at Chelsea in the long-term, a new report has now claimed that BlueCo may offer out any one of them in transfer talks for Sevilla centre-back Loic Bade.

Chelsea could offer Chalobah or Mudryk in bid for Loic Bade

In terms of straight cash, Chelsea are only willing to pay around £25 million, but they could include players to sweeten the deal.

That is according to reports from Spain, which suggest that Chelsea could offer Chalobah or Mudryk in a part-exchange bid for Bade. The Frenchman’s contract actually includes a £50 million release clause, but it appears Maresca’s side have little interest in paying it and would rather find a way to whittle down the overall cost of this move.

Aston Villa actually attempted to strike a deal for Bade in January, again for around £25 million, but both the Villans and Sevilla couldn’t shake hands on an agreement.

The 24-year-old Olympian is a mainstay for Sevilla, starting 22 La Liga games for them this season, and is currently the second-best performer in their entire squad going by average match rating per 90 (WhoScored).

Bade has also made more clearances per 90 than any other Sevilla player, according to WhoScored, so it looks as if he could be a solid addition to Maresca’s backline if they decide to formally pursue a deal.

Williamson not giving up on the World Cup dream just yet

Reuters26-Jun-2023Kane Williamson has not given up on playing a part in New Zealand’s 2023 ODI World Cup campaign as he takes his recovery from a right knee injury on a “week-to-week” basis.Williamson, who ruptured his ACL while fielding for Gujarat Titans against Chennai Super Kings in the opening game of IPL 2023 on March 31 and underwent surgery in early April, said ensuring the knee mended properly was his overriding priority.”Very much just trying to keep it week-to-week at the moment,” Williamson said on Monday. “I haven’t had such a long-term injury before but talking to other people that have, the journey is a bit of a long one so if you look too far ahead, it probably can become a little bit daunting.Related

“Whereas, one week at a time, ticking off those small markers, those little wins that are nice to experience. But also knowing that the journey won’t be completely smooth and you have a few setbacks along the way that you have to navigate.”Williamson was a vital cog in New Zealand’s batting unit as they made it to the final of both the 2015 and 2019 editions of the ODI World Cup. They were, however, unable to get over the line both times – losing to Australia in 2015 and England in 2019 in a dramatic Super Over.Williamson, 32, who has scored 6554 runs in ODIs at 47.83, said any training he was doing was “elementary” at the moment and he looked forward to getting back in the nets.”Probably more for sanity and changing things up… just nice to mix up all the gym work and the physio work and rehab specific stuff to spend a bit of time with some of the other guys that are training,” he said. “Super keen to get back in the nets, for sure.”The World Cup will be played in India in October and November.

Mehidy unfazed by defeat to Afghanistan: 'One series can go bad'

“We are not worried about it,” he said. “We can plan better for the Asia Cup and World Cup”

Mohammad Isam09-Jul-2023Bangladesh are writing off this ODI series defeat to Afghanistan as “two bad days”, according to Mehidy Hasan Miraz. The hosts were crushed by 142 runs as their recent ODI form deserted them, and Afghanistan went on to amass 331 by breaking a few records and seal their first series against the hosts. Mehidy said Bangladesh were “not worried” about the series loss and will plan better for the two big tournaments later in the year, the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup.”I think we had two bad days. We are not worried about it,” he said. “We can plan better for the Asia Cup and World Cup. We play to win every game. We will find out where we lack. I said in a press conference a little while ago that losing against Afghanistan won’t make us a bad side. One series can go bad.”We have a good record in the last three-four years. We finished in the top four in the ICC ODI Super League. I think we can overcome these mistakes from the past two games, and play much better in the Asia Cup and World Cup.”Related

Mehidy rejected the idea that Tamim Iqbal’s retirement and then the U-turn played any part in the defeat in the second ODI on Saturday.”Everyone was shocked with Tamim ‘s decision. Nobody expected it,” Mehidy said after the loss Chattogram. “It was a break that day and we had training yesterday. We prepared for this game. But that bad feeling was temporary.”Mehidy said that Bangladesh had fallen well behind in the match when they couldn’t stop the Afghanistan openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, who scored 145 and 100 respectively, from adding a massive 256 in 36 overs.”We gave away 30-40 runs more [than we should have],” he said. “We weren’t organised enough as a bowling unit. If our top order also made runs and had a partnership going, we could have taken this game deep. It became hard when the top order fell [quickly]”.However, Bangladesh’s bowlers brought them into the contest despite the visitors being well on track to post even 400. They grabbed nine wickets in the last 14 overs, thus restricting Afghanistan to only 75 runs in the period. That was a significant slowdown, particularly when they were going at above ten runs an over in the six overs before Gurbaz’s dismissal in the 37th over. Mehidy said that Bangladesh’s decision to bowl was to give their batters the best batting conditions under lights at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.”We expected the wicket to play better at night,” he said. “We batted first in the first game [after losing the toss]. The wicket was slow. It kept low. It improved in the evening, so the captain and coach thought that if [on winning the toss in the second ODI] we bowled well up front and then batted in the second innings, things will be easy for us.”Bangladesh were a bit slow in their chase and stumbled to 28 for 3 in the powerplay. The remaining six wickets – Ebadot Hossain didn’t bat due to an injury – fell in clusters of three each, too. And once they were 72 for 6 in the 19th over, the game was all but done.
