Big day for Uganda as they qualify for 2024 T20 World Cup

“While Uganda Cricket has performed well in the last 12 months, there are areas, particularly fielding, where we need to improve. And yet even after missing out on those chances, we still qualified for the World Cup!”Imagine how much better we can perform if we address these lapses. With enhanced game awareness and mental fortitude, we can compete with the world’s best teams on any given day.”Uganda allrounder Alpesh Ramjani said Abhay’s appointment will help the team grow. “His experience is a fortune for us. It is definitely going to help us in the World Cup, as well as for the development of the players individually,” Ramjani told PTI. “His techniques and experience will help in the growth of Uganda as a team.”At the T20 World Cup, Uganda have been placed in Group C with Afghanistan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and West Indies, one of the two hosts, USA being the other. 'Prepare your family' – Ian Wright reveals advice over racism after revealing he would still take a knee if playing today

Ian Wright has weighed in on the Lionesses' decision to no longer take the knee before matches, expressing that, had he still been an active player, he would consider continuing the act as a personal symbol of standing against racism. The former England and Arsenal striker emphasised that taking the knee should always have been an individual choice rather than a mandated team action.

Jess Carter suffered racial abuseReceived severe online hateLionesses will not take knee anymoreFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Wright’s remarks came in light of recent events surrounding England defender Jess Carter, who became the target of racist abuse following her performance in the Lionesses' UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 quarter-final win over Sweden. The player disclosed that she had faced a surge of racist attacks on social media after the match and has since made the decision to step away from online platforms temporarily.

In response to the abuse suffered by Carter and broader discussions within the squad, the England women's team confirmed they would no longer perform the symbolic kneel before games. The players released a collective statement, declaring that it was "clear we and football need to find another way to tackle racism." They stressed their intent to adopt a new approach, one that fosters genuine dialogue and actionable change.

WHAT WRIGHT SAID

Ahead of England's semi-final win over Italy, Wright returned to ITV’s pundit panel and addressed the significance of the knee and how it had evolved since first gaining prominence in football after the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020.

"Firstly I think the decision to take the knee should have been a person thing, if you want to take it," Wright said. "I think it was always forced on people, for me, if I was playing now, for everything the knee represents, if we think of justice and equality of everything that goes with it, I think I would still take the knee.

"But in respects of Jess, the priority is she is ok and has the support around her but for me, I have said everything I can over the years in terms of racism and what it means and what it does and nothing gets any better. What I would say now is prepare your children, prepare your family, make them resilient because it is going to continue to come. People say that is negative, it isn't they are winning and have been winning and will continue to win, I would urge people to build resilience against it. We can't stop it, it is always going to happen."

As Wright and others continue to advocate for awareness, respect, and resilience, the hope remains that football will evolve beyond symbolic gestures and toward real, lasting transformation. Meanwhile, Sarina Wiegman's troops are just a step away from successfully defending their Euro 2022 crown after they beat Italy 2-1 in the last four. They will now face the winners of Spain and Germany on Sunday at St. Jakob-Park.

Can Mumbai Indians still qualify for the playoffs?

With 50 games done in IPL 2024, no team has qualified for the playoffs – and no team is out of the race yet

S Rajesh02-May-2024Mumbai Indians can still make the playoffs. Even though Sunrisers Hyderabad’s victory over Rajasthan Royals has made their task tougher, Mumbai can still make the top four with 14 points. As things stand, it’s still possible for MI to be tied for third spot on 14 points, if RR and Kolkata Knight Riders win most of their matches and take the top two positions. For example, if Lucknow Super Giants and Sunrisers lose all their remaining games except the ones they play against each other on May 8, then the winner of that match will finish on 14, tied for third place with MI if they win their last four. It’s even possible for the six remaining teams to be tied on 12 each. What if Mumbai lose to KKR?If MI lose to KKR and the other matches follow the result pattern mentioned above, then MI will be one of seven teams tied on 12, fighting for one spot. That means mathematically they’ll still be in the mix even if they lose on Friday. What about RCB’s chances? Are they still in the mix? With six points from 10 games, RCB are in the same position as MI, except that they are on a two-match winning streak, compared to three losses in a row for MI. Fourteen points could keep them in the mix but at this stage, even 12 gives them a mathematical chance.Rajasthan Royals have all but qualified, right?Well, not quite. They are, of course, in the best position among all teams with 16 points from 10 games, but if they lose their four remaining matches, then it’s possible for four teams – KKR, SRH, LSG and Chennai Super Kings – to finish on 18 or more points. Even if they win one, RR could still be one of five teams with 18 or more. So, with 50 games done in IPL 2024, no team has qualified for the playoffs, and no team is out of the race yet.
