Should Pakistan worry about Sarfaraz Ahmed's form?

His batting and keeping may have plummeted of late, but does his captaincy mean he’s still indispensable to Pakistan?

Danyal Rasool in Lahore04-Oct-2019On Wednesday at the National Stadium in Karachi, Sarfaraz Ahmed did something unusual, something he’d only done twice since he became ODI captain: he came in to bat at No. 4.To start with, he had said explicitly at the start of the series that he would bat at No. 5. The two occasions that necessitated him coming up the order in recent times occurred in the Asia Cup last year when Pakistan had lost two early wickets. Besides, Sarfaraz’s ostensible reticence to bat higher up the order has been an issue that’s bubbled away below the surface for over a year; even batting at five has been a recent phenomenon. Before May 2019, Sarfaraz had batted at that position just once in the past 35 ODIs, and higher on only the two aforementioned occasions.ALSO READ: ‘Said one thing, did another’ – Mickey Arthur on people he ‘trusted’ in Pakistan set-upIt was why the promotion to four for the third ODI was eyebrow-raising. He had elevated himself above Haris Sohail, who averages 46.11 in ODIs, and over 50 since the start of the year, and has shown form since being recalled midway through the World Cup. Pakistan had lost their second wicket at 181, and it wasn’t yet 30 overs. If it was an attempt to lay down a marker of the quirky, streetwise batting smarts Sarfaraz still feels Pakistan require, it would fall somewhat flat. The Pakistan captain scratched around for 23 off 33 balls, with just the one boundary coming off a spinner’s full-toss. Meanwhile, 43 runs had been added by the batsman at the other end, which, ironically, was Haris for much of Sarfaraz’s stay. In the end, Pakistan won comfortably, so the move escaped too much scrutiny.

Now Sarfaraz’s riposte may rightfully be that he cops stick for batting both too low and too high, which is fair enough. But what should worry Pakistan supporters, and Sarfaraz himself most of all, is wherever he seems to bat, it just doesn’t seem quite right. He has hit just two sixes in his last 26 ODIs, so any time after the 35th over is usually too late. But with the current top four, walking out earlier seems ill-suited to Pakistan’s needs.Since the day he scored an unbeaten 61 to get Pakistan through to the 2017 Champions Trophy semi-final, Sarfaraz has captained Pakistan in 44 ODIs. In 18 of those games, he has either not batted or finished unbeaten for under 15. In a further 12, he’s managed fewer than 15 runs, and scored just three fifties. In the meantime, his wicketkeeping hasn’t quite been doing the heavy lifting to make up for his batting woes either.A team where the captain hasn’t nailed down his place is rarely a settled unit. It is why most sides hand the leadership role over to their best batsman, even when palpably superior tacticians and strategists reside within. It is, let’s be honest, the only justification for handing Babar Azam the vice-captaincy. Babar, besides his captain, is the only player guaranteed a spot in all three formats, and as his captain would tell him, that is something worth coveting.

Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistan’s second-choice keeper, has been breathing down Sarfaraz’s neck, despite his almost complete absence from any playing XIs over the past two-and-a-half years. The only times Rizwan has played for Pakistan since January 2017, back in those almost surreal days when Azhar Ali was ODI captain, were the five limited-overs matches in South Africa while Sarfaraz was serving a ban, and a further five ODIs against Australia that Pakistan used as an experiment ahead of the World Cup. Rizwan would score two centuries in that latter series, as many as Sarfaraz has in his entire ODI career.Even so, Pakistan opted not to take him to the World Cup, suggesting they had other back-up keepers in the side in case they were required. Ahead of this ODI series against Sri Lanka, Sarfaraz made a deliberate point of revealing Rizwan was in the side as a specialist batsman, effectively saying he was the only keeper-batsman in the side. In the T20Is, Rizwan was left out – though with that being Sarfaraz’s securest suit, both as captain and batsman, it isn’t quite so shocking. So what makes Sarfaraz so indispensable to Pakistan? Simply put, there isn’t, at present, anyone who can take over as Pakistan captain and command nearly as much authority as the 32-year-old does. Sarfaraz is popular enough in the side for the players to get behind him, despite his at times overbearing presence on the field, and the constant rebukes that can come off looking domineering on TV.Off camera, he can be jovial and self-deprecating, with even many of the youngest players able to interact with him as a colleague and a friend. Mickey Arthur said much the same in a recent interview with ESPNcricinfo. “Saifi’s a wonderful leader, and you judge the leader by the respect the players have for him. Saifi can be this hard dictator on the field and look like he’s in the players’ faces, but he comes off the field and he’s like their big brother. He’s in their corner, laughing and joking with them.”Sarfaraz Ahmed and Mickey Arthur have a chat during Pakistan’s training session•Getty ImagesA relaxed Sarfaraz is a wonderful Sarfaraz; it’s probably why the best we’ve seen of him in the past three years has been in the purple and gold of Quetta Gladiators, the franchise he led to PSL glory this year. There may be occasional resentment from the odd player about his conduct, but no genuine hostility. And he isn’t a terrible captain either. That series Pakistan played without Sarfaraz in March? They lost 5-0.Yes, he can let games drift sometimes, and begin going through the motions when under pressure – giving the final over to Wahab Riaz despite the wretched day he’d had on Wednesday was a clear indication of that. But Pakistan, partially through their own short-sightedness, haven’t groomed a captain waiting in the wings to take over. It is why even people who agree Sarfaraz’s captaincy days are numbered can’t quite rally around a replacement. It is why even when the PCB did away with the entire backroom staff, from head coach to chief selector, it stuck with the same captain for all three formats. For now, he is probably the best Pakistan have. But the times, as Bob Dylan almost said of the PCB 55 years ago, they are . Over the last year or so, the PCB has seen its chairman replaced, the domestic structure overhauled, the coaches and chief selectors done away with; even the media department has been almost completely revamped. Amidst this revolution, Sarfaraz manages to stand firm as Pakistan captain. He’s a scrappy cricketer who got to where he is by refusing to let go, and for now, Sarfaraz holds on.

£200k-per-week Arsenal star "looking" to quit despite Real Madrid "masterclass"

One player who dazzled in Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night is “now looking” to leave the Emirates Stadium this summer, according to a report.

Arsenal make history with stunning victory over Real Madrid

Mikel Arteta watched on from the sidelines as his side dominated European champions Real, in what was a statement performance from the Gunners.

The Premier League side have placed one huge foot in the Champions League semi-finals, and Carlo Ancelotti will be debilitated for the second leg after midfielder Eduardo Camavinga was sent off in the dying minutes of Real’s heavy defeat.

That being said, Los Blancos still pose a huge threat, and have made some truly historic comebacks on big nights in Europe over the last decade. Taking this into account, Arteta is definitely not counting his chickens just yet.

“I know how much work and how many decisions a lot of people have made in this football club, to live the night that we had tonight,” said a joyous Arteta after Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Real.

“I told them, thank you so much for making us enjoy the journey, to come here, and thank you, for me feeling so convinced that tonight we’re going to do it, and we’re going to make it happen. It was a genuine feeling because I think we are prepared to do that, and now we have to go to the Bernabeu and do it, and that will be another step.”

Alongside the likes of Rice, another key performer who’s attracted serious praise for his display against Real comes in the form of £200,000-per-week midfielder Thomas Partey.

The Ghanaian has been lavished by media for his “masterclass” in front of the back four, helping to break up Real’s play and averaging an impressive 94% passing accuracy over the 90 minutes. Partey also made more tackles than any other Arsenal player bar Jurrien Timber (WhoScored), and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet.

Thomas Partey "now looking" to leave Arsenal this summer

The 31-year-old has been very useful for Arteta this term, impressing both at both right-back and in midfield, but his contract is currently set to expire this summer as things stand.

There has been little noise regarding a potential new deal for Partey, with journalist Sergi Sole providing an update on his future in a piece for Mundo Deportivo.

Indeed, it is believed that Partey is “now looking” to leave Arsenal this summer, as he is keen to embark on a new chapter at this stage in his career, and Barcelona are thought to be his preference.

Performances like Tuesday night’s showcase why losing the African for nothing is a real blow for Arsenal, and new sporting director Andrea Berta should very seriously consider the possibility of attempting to change his mind and negotiating fresh terms.

Partey could still have a pivotal role to play and could prove a useful asset to have yet again next season, when Arteta will be hoping to end Arsenal’s long wait for a Premier League title.

Bigger star than Bergvall & Moore: Spurs have struck gold on "monster" gem

Over the last couple of years, Tottenham Hotspur have shifted their attention towards recruiting younger talents to provide quality down the line in North London.

Whilst such a decision has often been unpopular with the supporters, it is the right path to take to finally catapult the club towards Premier League glory in the coming years.

The lack of experience within the side could be partly to blame for their lowly league standing in 2024/25, leading to questions being asked around Ange Postecoglou’s future at the club.

However, the injury crisis has given numerous players the opportunity to thrive within the first-team squad, showcasing to the manager and supporters what they are capable of.

Two players in particular have excelled beyond all imagination in recent months, undoubtedly cementing their place within the senior setup beyond the end of the ongoing campaign.

Bergvall & Moore’s stats for Spurs in 2024/25

Midfielder Lucas Bergvall joined Spurs last summer from Swedish outfit Djurgarden, with many not knowing what to expect from the teenager – but it’s safe to say he’s impressed more than any supporter could’ve imagined.

The now 19-year-old has racked up 42 appearances across all competitions, registering four goal contributions along the way, with his only goal coming against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.

His rise is evident by the supporters’ decision to boo manager Postecoglou after substituting the youngster in the second half of their defeat against London rivals Chelsea earlier this month.

As for attacker Mikey Moore, he’s endured a stop-start season with his own injury issues, restricting him to just 16 appearances throughout the ongoing season.

However, in his outings, he’s still managed to make a positive impact, registering his first professional goal in the Europa League triumph over Elsborg back in January.

With the pair being just 19 and 17 respectively, they both have bags of time on their side to develop further, subsequently being joined in North London by a star who could be a bigger wonderkid than the duo.

The Spurs star who could be a bigger wonderkid than Bergvall & Moore

As a result of their investment in the next generation, there is a plethora of youth stars who could make the step-up to Ange’s side throughout 2025/26.

South Korean winger Min-Hyeok Yang is just one of the youngsters brought into the club over the last couple of years, moving to North London from Gangwon FC.

The teenager is currently spending the season on loan at Championship side Queens Park Rangers, notching two goals and one assist in his 12 league outings.

However, centre-back Luca Vuskovic is a player with huge potential to explode onto the scene upon his arrival at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

The 18-year-old agreed to move to Spurs back in September 2023 for a reported £12m from Hajduk Split before two loan spells at Radomiak Radom and Westerlo.

Tottenham Hotspur manager AngePostecogloubefore the match

He’s currently spending 2024/25 on loan from Split at the latter, starring in Belgium despite his tender age, but not just defensively, with his tally of goals truly sensational.

Vuskovic, who’s been labelled a “monster” by analyst Ben Mattinson, has notched seven goals in the Belgian Pro League – sitting as the club’s second-highest goalscorer.

The Lilywhites have been starved of success within the defensive third this campaign, with the young Croatian able to provide that next season, based upon the figures he’s achieved of late.

He’s won 65% of the tackles he’s entered, whilst also winning 4.1 aerial duels per 90, offering the presence in the air that Ange’s side have desperately lacked in recent months.

After such a successful spell ahead of his move to North London, it would be a huge mistake not to utilise him in the first team next year, saving the hierarchy millions in the process.

The prospect of the Croatian starring alongside Bergvall and Moore in the side over the next decade is certainly a scary one, with the club certainly setting themselves up for long-term success.

£111m Szobo upgrade: Liverpool chasing "the best midfielder in the world"

Liverpool may well be preparing for life without Trent Alexander-Arnold. Though nothing’s set in stone, the saga carries the bitter undertow of resignation that Anfield’s vice-captain is off to Real Madrid.

The 26-year-old has formed one prong of a three-pointed contractual problem that threatened the stability and success of Arne Slot’s maiden campaign, after he took over from Jurgen Klopp last summer.

But Virgil van Dijk, the skipper, and Mohamed Salah, the talisman, have both extended their deals on Merseyside, devoting the remainder of their prime years to Slot’s cause.

Liverpool'sTrentAlexander-Arnoldapplauds fans after the match

Alexander-Arnold, 26, still has his best years ahead of him, and there’s no question it will sting if the Liverpool-born talent, ‘the Scouser in our team’, leaves for nothing and joins his boyhood club’s continental nemesis.

Away from the emotional side of things, Trent’s a rather good playmaker. Pundit Jamie Carragher remarked last season that “it’s like having Kevin De Bruyne playing at right-back.”

Trent’s inventiveness is so unique, he’s Liverpool’s chief creative source. Should he leave, Liverpool will need more from the middle of the park. But, is Dominik Szoboszlai up to the task?

Dominik Szoboszlai's output

Szoboszlai is Liverpool’s recognised attacking midfielder, signed as part of Klopp’s midfield rebuild in 2023, joining from RB Leipzig for a £60m figure.

Dominik Szoboszlai celebrates for Liverpool

However, for all his physicality and intensity, the Hungary captain is not quite ravenous enough for goals and assists, with just 25 goal involvements notched across 89 matches for the Reds.

Looking at Szoboszlai’s two Premier League campaigns in red, it’s clear that he’s not producing the potent numbers that his lofty price tag demands. Indeed, with Alexander-Arnold expected to move to Spain, taking his creative flair with him, the attacking midfielder will surely need to up his game.

Though irrefutably, Szoboszlai has made gains this term, it’s still not enough to suggest he can fuel Liverpool’s offensive play.

Of course, Slot may not want to take such a risk ahead of a Premier League title defence, with plans being drawn out for a new addition who might even prove an upgrade on Szoboszlai.

FSG eyeing marquee Liverpool signing

As per Caught Offside, Liverpool are chasing a deal for Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, who is one of the most valuable players in the world and is being chased by some of Europe’s most prestigious outfits.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are thought to be leading the race at this early stage, but the Premier League’s finest are gearing up for summer bids, with Liverpool now joining Arsenal and Manchester City in pursuit of the German.

Leverkusen won’t let him go on the cheap; however, demands have already been made public that he will cost suitors around €130m (equating to £111m).

Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz

This is an extraordinary amount of money, but remember, two years ago Liverpool attempted to hijack Chelsea’s bid for Moises Caicedo, offering Brighton & Hove Albion a £111m figure, which was accepted.

Why Liverpool should sign Florian Wirtz

It looks like Bayer Leverkusen are going to go trophyless this season, having defied all expectations to win an invincible domestic double under Xabi Alonso’s wing last year, toppling over a decade of Bayern Munich dominance in the Bundesliga.

Florian Wirtz looks dejected

Wirtz, who is still only 21, scored 18 goals and supplied 20 assists across all competitions, instrumental throughout a campaign that will live long in the record books as one of the continent’s greatest.

Looking at his metrics compared to Szoboszlai’s in the Premier League (refer to the table above), Wirtz has created 16 big chances in the Bundesliga this season, scoring nine goals and providing ten assists across 27 matches. He’s also more combative, more active, averaging 5.4 duels and 2.7 dribbles per game.

This emphasises his desire to get stuck in, for one, and progress the ball into the danger area. Crucially, he puts paid to his opponents when presented with promising chances.

How he dances across the pitch, skipping with an almost mechanical gait that highlights his technical skill. It’s his economy of movement, though, that differentiates him from positional rivals, tigerish in his ability to pounce and make things happen, not wasting so much as a muscular twitch.

Wirtz actually ranks among the top 8% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goal involvements, the top 7% for shot-creating actions, the top 5% for progressive passes and the top 6% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref, illustrating a potency that Szoboszlai simply doesn’t boast.

Simplifying that clutter of data: he’s rather good at football, which is probably all you need to know.

Should it come as any surprise that former Leverkusen striker Patrick Helmes has described him as “the best midfielder in the world,” such is his level at this early career stage?

Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz

This would be quite the ambitious lunge, but a signing which could consolidate Liverpool’s position as one of Europe’s meanest outfits for many years to come.

With Trent set to leave for Real Madrid, Wirtz’s elite-level playmaking is exactly what is needed for Slot to reshape the creative flow of this exciting Liverpool team.

Szoboszlai’s great, but he hasn’t proved that he can step up to the plate in that regard.

Best deal since Bruno: Man Utd to lodge £50m bid for "world-class" star

Manchester United have a huge rebuild on their hands this summer, looking to catapult the club back towards their former glory within the Premier League.

Ruben Amorim has done a superb job to stop the rot at Old Trafford, already implementing his 3-4-2-1 system at the club, looking to transform their recent fortunes.

Whilst they still occupy a place in the bottom half of the table, the 40-year-old has led the Red Devils to a Europa League final, facing off against fellow English side Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the month.

Should they claim another win in Bilbao, the club will be featuring in the Champions League despite their lowly standing, offering the supporters a glimpse of joy in what’s been a dismal year.

If they are to be competitive across the board in 2025/26, new additions are needed to help Amorim in his quest, with numerous players already linked with a switch to Old Trafford.

The latest on United’s hunt for new signings this summer

Matheus Cunha has been United’s most linked player over recent weeks, with the Brazilian international potentially being their first addition of the summer window.

The latest update on his future has revealed that the hierarchy remains in talks with his representatives over a move to the North West, also looking to trigger his £62.5m release clause.

Wolverhampton Wanderers' MatheusCunhacelebrates scoring their fourth goal

However, the 25-year-old isn’t the only player on their list this window, with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma emerging as a key option for the manager this summer, according to one Spanish outlet.

The report claims that the Red Devils are preparing to lodge a £50m bid for the 26-year-old during the off-season, looking to bolster the options in the goalkeeping department.

It also confirms the club are looking to take advantage of his current situation with the Ligue 1 outfit, with his contract set to expire in the summer of 2026.

Why United’s £50m target would be their best since Bruno

Bruno Fernandes has been the shining light for United throughout 2024/25, often producing the goods in key moments and helping Amorim’s side reach the Europa League final.

Bruno Fernandes

The Portuguese international has registered 36 combined goals and assists in his 53 appearances, heads and tails above the tallies produced by any other first-team member.

Such form has led to former Red Devils star Gary Neville claiming that the 30-year-old is the only player in the last decade to have lived up to expectations after moving to Old Trafford.

The quote is hardly a surprise given the fact that he’s registered at least 20 combined goals and assists in every one of the seasons he’s spent in Manchester after joining from Sporting CP back in January 2020.

However, Donnarumma could be the club’s best signing since Fernandes, should he move to the club this summer, massively improving the options at the manager’s disposal.

Andre Onana has been the number one option between the sticks this campaign, but has often come into question for his mistakes, making five errors leading to goals across all competitions.

A deal for the Italian would hand the side an added bit of quality, with his moments of magic handing hand the Red Devils the added quality they’ve been craving in such a department.

Donnarumma, who’s been labelled “world-class” by Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, has made an average of 2.2 saves per 90 – capable of producing flashes of individual brilliance – as seen against Arsenal in the Champions League.

He’s also completed 87% of the passes he’s attempted, allowing Amorim’s side to play out from the back, whilst making zero errors leading to goals – handing the club a reliable option between the sticks.

The ‘keeper has also shown his quality in preventing penalties, making two crucial saves in the penalty shootout against England in the final of Euro 2020, with the Italian certainly a huge piece of the club’s rebuild.

It will be interesting to see whether the Ligue 1 outfit will entertain selling their number one this summer, with his contract predicament one that needs to be resolved.

However, if he was given the green light to switch to England, it could be the catalyst for any success endured in the next few years, undoubtedly landing one of the very best talents in his position.

While injuries to key players arguably crippled Arsenal’s chances this season, it is becoming a real worry for Arteta that the club have precious little to show for their £500 million net spend on transfers since the Spaniard took charge.

“It depends,” said Arteta on whether Arsenal can win a trophy soon.

“This squad, two years ago, nobody believed that we could even qualify for the Champions League, or even think that we could finish second or compete in the league. Or have the amount of points that we had that in any other year you are a champion. Or have the run and the results and the performances that we had in the Champions League. But the reality at the end is that you need something to lose, and that trophy with all the work that we do, and disappointment is that it’s not going to happen.”

Arsenal manager MikelArteta

New sporting director Andrea Berta’s arrival at the Emirates Stadium is a major boost for Arteta ahead of next season, as the astute transfer operator is expected to seriously back him in the transfer market this summer.

According to widespread reports, Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen is a top target for them after his very impressive debut season in the Premier League with Bournemouth.

As per the reliable David Ornstein, Arsenal have already held talks with Huijsen’s representatives and are ready to pay his £50 million release clause, but competition for his signature is fierce to say the least.

Arsenal make "formal" offer to Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen

As per Cadena SER, Arteta’s side will have to contend with Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool for the 20-year-old, not to mention Real Madrid.

However, in a bid to get ahead of Los Blancos, it is believed Arsenal have presented a “formal” offer to Huijsen and his representatives, while Real are forced to delay their proposal due to complications.

Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen

They’re waiting on the potential appointment of Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso before making any approaches, as they need to gauge what the Spaniard would want in terms of players to improve his Real squad for next season.

This gives Premier League sides like Arsenal a chance to swoop in and tempt the player first, but Huijsen has every intention of giving Real a chance to present their offer, as his team have hired a law firm to negotiate with the Spanish heavyweights on the “sensational” defender’s behalf.

Their next Ozil: Arteta pushing Arsenal to sign £85m "big game player"

When it comes to the biggest stars of Arsenal’s Emirates era, one name will come to mind for most: Mesut Özil.

The German international joined the Gunners in a shock £42.4m move from Real Madrid on transfer deadline day 2013, in a moment that every fan who was around at the time will still remember as if it was yesterday.

The mercurial midfielder might have left the club under a bit of cloud, but for most of his time in the capital, he was simply superb and managed to rack up a tally of 44 goals and 77 assists in 254 appearances.

So, fans should be excited about recent reports linking the club to another international superstar who could have a similar impact to Ozil in North London.

Arsenal transfer news

Before getting to the player in question, it’s worth looking at some of the other stars linked with Arsenal who could be game-changing acquisitions, like Viktor Gyokeres and Morgan Rogers.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The former could reportedly cost around £63m, and it’s not hard to see how he could change the Gunners’ fortunes next year, as in just 50 appearances this season, he’s scored 52 goals and provided 13 assists.

Likewise, with 14 goals and 14 assists in 52 appearances for Aston Villa this season, Rogers looks like he’d be more than worth the £100m price tag reportedly on his head.

Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers

However, there is another superstar attacker whose impact on the North Londoners could more closely mirror Ozil’s: Rodrygo.

Yes, according to a recent report from journalist Ben Jacobs, Real Madrid are “willing to let Rodrygo go” this summer, and this has put Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool on alert, with them all regarding this as a real “market opportunity.”

However, just because he’s available to sign doesn’t mean it’ll be a cheap transfer to get over the line, with reports from earlier this week claiming that he could cost £85m.

It’s safe to say this is a deal that may well have legs. Even the Athletic have joined in on the party, suggesting Arteta is a huge fan of the tricky winger.

With all that said, Arsenal should still do all they can to sign Rodrygo this summer, as he’d add so much to their attack and could have a similar impact to Ozil all those years ago.

Rodrygo's similarities to Ozil

Okay, so we aren’t saying that Rodrgyo is even remotely similar to Ozil as a player in his playstyle, but were this deal to go through this summer, then it would be undeniably reminiscent of the German’s 12 years ago.

For example, when the midfield maestro moved to the Emirates in 2013, it was the biggest statement that the Gunners had made in the market for a very long time, and should they secure the Brazilian in the coming months, you’d be able to say the same thing.

Secondly, it would be another case of the North Londoners taking advantage of Real moving on one of their biggest superstars, and at the same age as well, with the World Cup winner being just 24 when he left the Bernabeu.

Finally, and this is important, the Osasco-born dynamo has the raw talent and ability to go on and be just as influential as Ozil was during his time at the Emirates.

For example, since the start of last season, the “world-class superstar,” as dubbed by Luka Modrić, has scored 31 goals and provided 19 assists in 102 appearances, totalling 7,067 minutes.

That means the 24-year-old has maintained an impressive average of a goal involvement every 2.04 games, or every 141.34 minutes across two years of football at the very highest level.

Finally, the “big game player” as Dougie Critchley described him, also knows how to get himself and his team across the finishing line in the biggest competitions, and as such, has won two Champions Leagues, three La Ligas, the Club World Cup, the Copa del Rey and others.

Ultimately, Rodrygo is one of the very best wingers in world football, and if Arsenal can secure his services this summer, he’d be following in Ozil’s footsteps and could go on to be just as influential in North London as the German was.

Aston Villa battling to sign "smart" star who's confirmed transfer decision

In what would be a bargain deal, Aston Villa are now reportedly in the race to sign a midfield star who has already confirmed his next steps ahead of this summer.

Aston Villa's final UCL push

It all comes down to Sunday for Aston Villa. Unai Emery’s side travel to square off against a heartbroken Manchester United side who are fresh from their Europa League defeat and simply must compile the Red Devils’ misery. As things stand, they sit outside of the top five on goal difference and must desperately hope to see at least one of Manchester City, Chelsea or Newcastle United slip up.

There’s no denying just how important this weekend’s action is and Emery hasn’t tried to play things down in the build-up. The Spaniard told reporters in his pre-match press conference: “In our hands is only our result on Sunday, how we can respond and how we can perform against Manchester United.

“That’s the only issue I want to focus on with the players. I don’t want to know other results.

“I want only to play our match, only to focus on our match in 90 minutes and try to focus the dressing room on the first half on everything tactically and individually. We will not focus on other results. We must win, we must compete and we must get our result. We must respect Manchester United. That’s the only way I want to focus on Sunday.”

The impact that Champions League football would have on Villa’s summer business also cannot be overstated. It could instantly put them in a position to attract top talents for the second season on the bounce, which may yet include an England international for a bargain price.

Aston Villa chasing Angel Gomes deal

According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, Aston Villa are now battling to sign Angel Gomes, who has already confirmed that he will be leaving LOSC Lille at the end of his current contract next month.

Aston Villa could be on the search for a new goalkeeper this summer

The England international said in a statement on Instagram: “After four unforgettable years at LOSC Lille, it’s time for me to say goodbye.

“This club has been more than just a team – it’s been a family, a home, and a place that has shaped me both on and off the pitch. Like any journey, there were ups and downs, highs and lows, but I’m truly grateful to my teammates and the fans for sticking with me throughout.”

Gomes’ time at the French club will be looked back on as a pivotal turning point for his career. From a Manchester United reject, the midfielder transformed into a deep-lying midfielder who is now ready to step back into the Premier League.

Dubbed a “smart” passer by analyst Ben Mattinson, Gomes is set to become one of the best bargains of the summer transfer window wherever he ends it playing for Aston Villa or, indeed, another club.
