West Ham fans react to Obiang speculation

West Ham United midfielder Pedro Obiang is a £15m transfer target for Fiorentina, Villarreal and Besiktas this summer, as covered by The Sun at the weekend.

Obiang joined the Hammers from Sampdoria back in 2015, and he is fast closing on 100 appearances for the Premier League club in all competitions.

The 26-year-old missed a lot of football last season due to a knee problem, but was involved in West Ham’s 3-1 win over Everton on the final weekend of the campaign.

Obiang has a contract at the London Stadium until the summer of 2022, but it is understood that Fiorentina, Villarreal and Besiktas all want to sign him ahead of the 2018-19 season.

It remains to be seen whether new West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini views Obiang as part of his plans moving forward.

However, the club’s supporters have been reacting to the speculation on social media.

There are those who feel that Obiang would not be a huge miss, but there are also plenty who would be disappointed to see the Spain-born midfielder leave the club this summer.

Newcastle fans react to Jullien speculation

According to Yahoo Sport France, Newcastle United are interested in signing Toulouse defender Christopher Jullien in this summer’s transfer window.

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez is still believed to be unclear what type of transfer budget he has to spend this summer, but preparations for the new campaign are underway.

Benitez is believed to want at least one new centre-back this summer, and according to Yahoo Sport France, could battle Southampton for the services of Jullien.

The 25-year-old started his professional career with Auxerre, but has been with Toulouse since 2016, and has made 73 appearances for the French club – scoring seven times.

The former France Under-20 international stands at an impressive 6ft 5in, meanwhile, and has the potential to be a serious force in the Premier League.

The Newcastle fans have caught wind of the transfer speculation on social media, and have been reacting to the news.

That said, it seems that a number of the club’s supporters are finding it hard to believe that their club will be able to get this deal over the line.

Spending spree: Sunderland absolutely need to seal fourth deal to kickstart rebuild

Don’t worry Sunderland fans, it seems like it’s going to be a busy summer in the Transfer Tavern.

New boss, Jack Ross has got straight down to work since joining the club. He has already signed three players – Alim Ozturk, Jon McLaughlin and Chris Maguire – as he looks to rebuild his squad ahead of next season. The next player on the list for Ross is Burton Albion defender Tom Flanagan.

The Breakdown

The Chronicle is reporting that Sunderland are closing in on the signing of 26-year-old. A product of the Milton Keynes Dons’ youth academy, Flanagan was released in 2015 following unsuccessful loan spells at Kettering, Gillingham, Barnet, Stevenage and Plymouth.

He joined Burton Albion in 2015 on a free transfer where he rejuvenated his career. Following his superb performances that year, Flanagan was called up by Michael O’Neill to the Northern Ireland squad.

That season, Flanagan helped Albion win promotion to the Championship, however, his most recent season with Albion resulted in relegation to League One and his subsequent release from the club.

Sunderland’s defence at the moment is lacking numbers. Paddy McNair has left the club and Lamine Kone looks likely to leave the club. Moreover, considering the number of goals Sunderland conceded last season (80), the Wearside club will be looking to get as much help as they can for next season.

A big benefit of Flanagan is his ability to play across the back four and thus give Sunderland some cover across a threadbare defence. Moreover, at 26 and experienced in the Championship, Flanagan is entering the prime years of his career and knows what it takes to win in the league.

Adam Federici would be a safe pair of hands for Stoke

Stoke City have begun talks with AFC Bournemouth over a deal to sign goalkeeper Adam Federici on a permanent basis, according to Sky Sports.

What’s the story?

The 33-year-old has enjoyed a long career in English football and started last season on loan from Bournemouth at Nottinham Forest, but an injury cut this short.

The Australian shot-stopper has been limited for chances at Bournemouth, with Asmir Begovic and Artur Boruc the preferred first and second choices.

But with Stoke’s Lee Grant looking like he’s making a surprise move to Manchester United, the Potters will need cover for Jack Butland next season in the Championship and according to Sky Sports, Federici could be their man.

No fee is mentioned in the report, but for a third choice goalkeeper with one year left on his contract, Stoke shouldn’t have to shell out too much for the ‘keeper who’s valued at £675,000 on Transfermarkt.

Good move for Stoke?

While it may not be the most exciting transfer for Stoke fans, it is an important one, as Federici has experience playing at Championship level and could well be called upon if Butland can’t play.

He made over 200 league appearances for Reading in the Championship and Premier League and he represents a safe pair of hands if he is ever required.

Alasdair Gold provides fresh update on Spurs’ striker pursuit

According to Alasdair Gold, Tottenham Hotspur are still looking for a new striker ahead of the 11pm deadline later this evening.

[ad_pod ]

What’s the word?

It’s claimed that the north Londoners are trying to find a solution, but they have suffered many a setback over the course of the past few days.

Gold states that Spurs have taken a look at Willian Jose (Real Sociedad), Ze Luis (Porto), Islam Slimani (Monaco) and Olivier Giroud (Chelsea).

Krzysztof Piatek was identified as a target before he swapped AC Milan for Hertha Berlin earlier this week.

Other options

Their route to clinch Giroud is pretty much dead in the water after Frank Lampard confirmed that the striker would stay at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea struggling to sign a striker themselves today, while similarly, Sociedad claimed their activity was complete – putting an end to Jose’s chances of joining.

A move for Ze Luis would be impossible due to the work permit situation involved.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Slimani has been written off due to Monaco’s reluctance to cut short his current loan.

Thus, this has resulted in the club scrambling to find other options in the final hours of the transfer window with manager Jose Mourinho looking for a target man of sorts.

Their preference would be a British player or one with Premier League experience.

Who on earth is that?!?! Can you name all of these obscure January signings?

However, they have left this far too late to sort out, which falls entirely on chairman Daniel Levy and those involved in the decision-making.

Failure to replace the injured Harry Kane could scupper their chances of reaching the Champions League next season – Spurs have won just one of their last five top-flight matches, and that was to a struggling Norwich City, just.

Tottenham fans are beginning to lose their patience with this star

Harry Kane’s emergence last season caught everyone off guard, and we all half expected him to hit the ground running for Spurs in the Premier League this season.

But instead the England international has looked a shadow of his former self so far this term, with the striker still searching for his first goal for the north London club this season.

Some did claim he’d be a one season wonder, but his performances for England in the recent international break suggested he’d soon be banging them in for fun for Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

It was widely believed today would be the day his drought would end, with the visit of an impressive looking Crystal Palace still looking like the perfect opportunity for Kane to get off the mark.

But during the opening 45 minutes of this afternoon’s London derby at White Hart Lane, Kane was still clearly lacking in confidence, with him drifting in and out of the game and looking a far cry from his normal lethal self.

And Spurs fans appear to be slowly giving up on him if the below tweets are anything to go by…

Three positives for Liverpool in their draw with Tottenham

Jurgen Klopp has been handed the considerable task of restoring Liverpool to their glory days, with the highly rated German coach taking over the reins at Anfield from the axed Brendan Rodgers.

The former Borussia Dortmund man oversaw his first game in charge at White Hart Lane on Saturday, with the Reds recording a 0-0 draw against Tottenham.

Both sides had chances to win the encounter, but Klopp admitted that he was satisfied with the result in the aftermath of the game.

Although Liverpool have a host of injury concerns currently, the performance will have instilled the travelling support with some optimism; here are three reasons why….

Klopp’s pressing game immediately apparent

In his time with Dortmund, the outspoken trainer enforced a high pressing line on his team with the ultimate aim of winning back possession in the opposition’s half and immediately attacking.

This ploy can be risky and drag players out of position, but it also has the potential to be the first line of defence and a scintillating attacking weapon.

For it to work, the players must work together and be committed to press the ball for 90 minutes, otherwise the tactic is defunct.

The initial signs that Liverpool can play this style of football are good, with the Reds outrunning their young opponents on Saturday and the team seemingly buying into their new manager’s ideals.

Mignolet eradicating inconstancy fears

Liverpool had chances of their own to win the game but will be grateful to goalkeeper Simon Mignolet for ensuring that they did not lose it.

The Belgian goalkeeper has had an inconsistent time of it since moving to Anfield from Sunderland, with the stopper capable of inspired displays but also lapses in concentration.

Luckily for the visitors Mignolet’s showing at White Hart Lane was one showing just how good a shot-stopper he can be, with telling saves to deny the likes of Clinton N’jie and Harry Kane from breaking the deadlock.

If Liverpool are to progress under Klopp with the players at his disposal, the goalkeeper will need to continue to be a safe pair of hands and stamp out the silly errors that have blighted his time on Merseyside.

A clean sheet and improved defensive performance

The result meant that it was Liverpool’s first clean sheet in eight games, with Mignolet perhaps the hero but the back four also contributing to a stout rearguard effort.

Mamadou Sakho looks to be relishing a run back in the starting XI after beginning the campaign on the fringes, with his partnership with Martin Skrtel looking like Liverpool’s best at centre-half.

Nathaniel Clyne continues to impress down the right flank, while Alberto Moreno showed glimpses of why he was so highly regarded in his Sevilla days.

With Lucas Leiva also providing a resolute defensive shield in front of the back four, this clean sheet is something for Klopp to build on.

Man United star sums up the depression surrounding English football

England’s captain, record goalscorer and inspirational leader. Well he’s some of those things anyway!

Wayne Rooney has to be seen as an England great. After all, he has 108 caps, and will receive his 109th tonight against France. He’s scored 50 goals – more than anyone else – and he’s quite simply been England’s only player with top class name recognition and trophies for the last few seasons.

In the next decade Rooney will retire and England will rely on Raheem Sterling, Ross Barkley, John Stones and maybe even Daniel Sturridge if he can stay fit for long enough. It’s not a bad lot, at least in terms of potential. Roy Hodgson – or probably his successor – will just have to make sure that they reach that potential. If they do, England can go places.

Yet we’ve said that before. Too many times before.

In the days of David Beckham and Paul Scholes, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, England were routinely named as one of the best teams in the world. How could you argue with that, though? All of those players were not only wonderful servants to their clubs, but they were winners. Premier League titles are one thing, but they won on the European stage, too. Clearly they were some of the best players in Europe, yet they couldn’t do it internationally.

And that’s the depressing reality of English football. All of those players are now gone and the final link is Wayne Rooney, England’s top goalscorer and ‘only world class player’.

At least, that’s been the debate of late… is Rooney world class?

If England have ever had a world class player, then Rooney has to be in that category, too. He is the nation’s record scorer – he’s also closing in on Sir Bobby Charlton’s Manchester United record, too. So if you’re going on goals alone, he’s top.

And if you want to question his work rate surely you have to come to the conclusion that, at least for most of his career, he’s been second to none.

Yet Rooney, England’s national star, top scorer and main striker, hasn’t been prolific for an entire year. It’s partly because of his club’s troubles breaking down defences that Rooney has been singled out for criticism, but also partly because he’s looking old now. He’s puffing around the pitch like a man who’s simply past his best.

And that’s the problem England face. The guard has been changed, there’s negativity around the national team because they don’t inspire the same level of confidence that the likes of Lampard, Gerrard and Scholes did.

But what did the old guard ever achieve?

Rooney may be the link to that generation of top class players, but those old players never took England further than a quarter-final. They even failed to qualify for EURO 2008.

It might be management, it might be tactics, it might be a lack of passion, confidence or even media pressure. But whatever it was, it failed.

Yet it was still the vehicle to produce England’s top scorer of all time.

English football has to live with the reality that a man who, on current form, shouldn’t be getting anywhere near the national team is not only captain and top scorer, but is also probably one of the very few men who can class themselves as a bona fide legend.

In many ways that’s depressing. But it gives a chance to the new, young squad that Hodgson has at his disposal to shine. Maybe Hodgson should be thinking about giving them the opportunity to do it without Rooney…

This Frenchman must look to part ways with Arsenal in January

When he first emerged in the Premier League a few seasons ago, Mathieu Debuchy looked like he may very well represent a top acquisition for fans of the Premier League to enjoy.

The French defender seemingly impressed at St. James’ Park when Newcastle United initially picked up his services in the winter of 2013, and although the Magpies have subsequently suffered a great deal out on the pitch as a result of numerous combining factors, the now 30-year-old nonetheless did enough to warrant a move to Arsenal not long after first introducing himself on Tyneside.

However, after suffering a series of testing injuries down at the Emirates and falling behind the likes of both Calum Chambers and Hector Bellerin in Arsene Wenger’s pecking order, the one-time French international seems to have reached a resounding dead end with the Gunners at present.

[ffc-gal cat=”arsenal” no=”5″]

So then, must Arsenal simply look to move the former Lille right-back on this January with relatively little fuss, or does Mathieu Debuchy still have something to offer in North London throughout the remainder of the campaign?

Although the flying French defender initially impressed in Ligue 1 during the early stages of his career, Debuchy has indeed failed to set the European footballing scene alight since joining up with the Gunners.

For one reason or another, the former Newcastle favourite just hasn’t managed to tie down a regular first team role at Arsenal – despite once representing one of the standout right-backs in the league.

Sometimes deals such as this one invariably fail to work out in the end. If the 30-year-old Frenchman hadn’t of suffered the range of ill-timed injury concerns he did in-fact have to deal with at the start of his stint with the Gunners – who knows – maybe things could have turned out very differently for Debuchy.

In Ligue 1 and under Alan Pardew’s unpredictable Newcastle United outfit in seasons past, the current Arsenal bench-warmer did look like a real star in the making. Mathieu Debuchy once possessed the somewhat priceless ability of being able to combine sheer defensive responsibility, with the all-important need to help his teammates out in the attacking areas of the pitch.

When it came to beating his opponents out wide on the flank, sending in well measured crosses for his strikers to attack, as well as being able to race back in line when the going got tough in defensive positions, pre-injury Debuchy rarely used to disappoint. His all-encompassing overall game successfully caught the attention of Arsene Wenger in the first place after all, which usually proves a worthy indicator.

Yet now that each of Hector Bellerin, Calum Chambers and Carl Jenkinson (should he return to the Emirates after his loan spell with West Ham expires) all represent younger options for Wenger to contend with in the future, Mathieu Debuchy no longer has a meaningful role to fulfil at the Emirates.

His past domestic experience could nonetheless prove useful for another Premier League side looking to acquire a new right-back in January, and as Debuchy also once excelled in the French squad on the international scene, maybe there is life in this forgotten 30-year-old as of yet.

Newcastle United could arguably do with their old defender back on board this term, with several other sides in the English top-flight in desperate need of defensive strengthening before the closure of the January transfer window.

In the end, though, Arsenal seemingly no longer require the services of the determined Frenchman going into the New Year, which could bring about a rather abrupt end to an Emirates career that sadly never really got going in the first place.

[ad_pod id=’writeforus’ align=’center’]

Why Liverpool don’t really need to sign this £38m man in January

Let’s face it – when it comes to putting their money where their mouth is within the transfer market of late, and subsequently landing big-name players intended to help set the excitement of the Anfield faithful alight – Liverpool haven’t exactly excelled in recent years.

From the over-priced duo of Roberto Firmino and Christian Benteke, who somehow set the Reds back close to £60million over the summer, to the dangerously expensive likes of Andy Carroll, Stewart Downing and Dejan Lovren in transfer windows past, Liverpool have seemingly made a habit out of signing debatable assets on paper, yet somehow agreeing to pay world-class prices for players who ultimately prove less than unstoppable out on the pitch.

So then, as Shakhtar Donetsk’s Alex Teixeira has recently been linked with a high profile move to Anfield this January, has Jurgen Klopp sourced the right man for the job this time around, or does this latest transfer target represent yet another over-priced player who won’t make the grade at Liverpool?

[ffc-gal cat=”liverpool” no=”5″]

Although an element of risk certainly begins to surround any hopeful footballer looking to make a name for himself within the English top-flight these days, Alex Teixeira ultimately seems more than capable of scoring goals in the Premier League.

The 26-year-old Brazilian attacker can work effectively when patrolling up-top on his own, the current Shakhtar Donetsk man also knows how to operate the flanks successfully enough based on his current form this season, and when played behind a recognised centre-forward with the freedom to express his own individual game in front of goal, this is a player who has failed to disappoint recently.

Alex Teixeira has proven an influential play-maker at times this term, as well as someone who knows what it takes to score goals at a truly impressive rate. Although the often testing nature of the English top-flight would likely represent a major step up in his career, the immediate future looks bright for whichever team eventually manages to acquire his services in the not too distant future.

However, before the Anfield faithful start getting carried away with his potential to make things happen on Merseyside this January, maybe the Reds hierarchy should really consider the sizeable asking price currently hanging above Alex Teixeira’s head before making their move.

Whilst he certainly looks like a player worthy of playing in the Premier League, do Liverpool really need to land the South American star this season after reportedly having a £28million bid rejected by his current employers?

Due to the increasing level of competition surrounding the services of Alex Teixeira this winter, Shakhtar Donetsk are apparently willing to hold out for a sum closer to the £40million mark.. Chelsea have also supposedly raised an interest in landing him, so Liverpool may really have to push the boat out in order to make Alex Teixeira theirs this January.

WANT MORE? >> Liverpool transfer news | Latest transfer news

Surely Jurgen Klopp should be focussing his club’s resources on strengthening Liverpool’s often calamitous back-line before looking to introduce yet another risky front-man within the first team fold at Anfield?

The entire core running through the heart of the Reds starting XI arguably needs looking at before Liverpool start pointing their cash towards sensational big-name signings, who actually carry very little guarantee to their name.

When everything is taken into account for the Merseysiders this January, Liverpool should potentially resist the urge to spend big on Alex Teixeira before the close of the current transfer window, and perhaps cast their attention towards some no-nonsense defensive recruitments above all else.
