Paul Farbrace targets Hundred coaching role after moving on from Warwickshire

Former England assistant coach hopeful of opportunity for 2023 season

Matt Roller07-Nov-2022

Paul Farbrace is head coach of Team Abu Dhabi, and will be in charge of Sharjah Warriors in the ILT20•T10 League/Team Abu Dhabi

Paul Farbrace has declared his interest in a role in the Hundred next year, after leaving his position as Warwickshire’s director of cricket at the end of the 2022 county season.Farbrace turned down a job offer during the initial recruitment phase for Hundred coaches in 2019 in order to join Warwickshire after four years working with Trevor Bayliss as England’s assistant coach, and said he would be interested in a role in the tournament if an opportunity presents itself.Head coaches in the Hundred are appointed on rolling one-year contracts and while most incumbents are expected to stay put for the tournament’s third season in 2023, Gary Kirsten appears unlikely to return after Welsh Fire’s winless campaign.Farbrace left his role at Edgbaston in order to spend more time with his family, who live in Kent, but is due to spend two of the next four months in the UAE, coaching Team Abu Dhabi in the Abu Dhabi T10 after taking the role on last year, before returning in January as head coach of Sharjah Warriors in the inaugural ILT20.”Before I took the job at Warwickshire, I was offered the head coach role at one of the Hundred teams when I came back from [England’s tour to] the West Indies,” Farbrace told ESPNcricinfo. “But I turned it down at the last minute because the Warwickshire role had come up.”I definitely would be interested, if things go well at these two franchises and an opportunity comes up in the Hundred. If I get a chance next year, that could be a nice way to go. As much as I love county cricket, the Hundred is a great tournament.”Related

Farbrace hopes to use the winter to see whether he can take his skills as a coach from county and international cricket into the franchise world, and is approaching the challenge with an open mind. “For the first time in my life, I’ve actually given myself a bit of a breather,” Farbrace said. “The only time I’ve ever been in this position is when I got the sack at Kent 11 years ago.”I don’t know yet whether franchise cricket is for me or not but I’ve got these two opportunities and it gives me a chance to see what I want to do. Warwickshire was a 12-months-of-the-year job and after four years living in Birmingham with my wife living in Kent, it was probably the right time. With franchise cricket, you can do a month away and then a month at home.”Team Abu Dhabi finished third under Farbrace last season and he has signed Chris Lynn, Alex Hales and Adil Rashid for 2022 in a bid to win the title for the first time. “It was a real eye-opener for me last year,” Farbrace said. “I went in thinking it was going to be brutal for the bowlers but actually, it’s just as tough for the batters because you’re expected to line up world-class bowlers and hit them out the park.”We’ve learned from last year in how we’ve set our squad up: we took the second-most wickets and thought that would slow runs rates down at the end but didn’t quite manage that, and that cost us, so we’ve got a little bit more variation in our attack this time round. It’s a brilliant environment to be around with world-class players in every team.”

Value has soared 190%: Wilder has hit gold on “class” Sheffield United star

Despite Daniel Farke’s Leeds United coasting to many a victory in the Championship as of late, the Whites head into their big promotion clash tonight with Sunderland not perched at the summit of the difficult division.

Instead, Sheffield United are currently sat there admiring the view from top spot, having picked up a mammoth 22 wins themselves in league action, as Chris Wilder’s men eye up an instant glorious return back to the Premier League.

Looking back at their business before a ball was kicked gives you some insight as to how the top-flight’s basement club from the 2023/24 season have managed to bounce back so successfully, rather than being stuck inside that bleak pit.

United's best summer business

Back in the summer, before splashing £10m on new striker Tom Cannon, the South Yorkshire outfit went about their business in a rather shrewd manner.

Indeed, seven of United’s purchases before the hectic second-tier season got underway were either free transfers or loan signings, with both Callum O’Hare and Tyrese Campbell entering the building strokes of genius as EFL experienced heads.

The pair have amassed eight goals between them, surrounded by the likes of fellow attacking talent in the form of Crystal Palace loanee Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, who has six league strikes all on his own.

Away from bodies entering the building, the Blades also did a fantastic job in keeping some of the standout personnel from their Premier League journey, with Anel Ahmedhodzic an absolute brute at the back dropping down a level.

Helping himself to 12 clean sheets, he has made the Blades an extremely tough team to break down, with the man behind him in-between the sticks another sterling purchase that did cost United a fee, but has already made that amount look worthwhile.

Michael Cooper's soaring value

A brand new goalkeeper was arguably a must for Wilder and Co when dropping back down to the unforgiving second tier, having leaked a horrendous 104 goals in the top flight.

That’s where former Plymouth Argyle shot-stopper Michael Cooper has come to the rescue, with the 25-year-old now going down as a top £2m find from Devon.

Having made a name for himself at his boyhood employers with 55 clean sheets picked up from 161 appearances, the promotion-chasing Blades gambled on Cooper to be their Championship-ready ‘keeper and that decision has more than paid off with stunning saves such as this penalty stop back in November becoming commonplace.

Across 31 contests in South Yorkshire to date, Cooper has only shipped 21 strikes, with only two goals surrendered all of February so far as his high-flying team hunt down more and more pivotal victories.

Subsequently, his value has shot up and has justified United paying a fee to land the former League One Golden Glove winner, knowing full well that his continued excellence could be the difference-maker between automatic promotion being clinched and a playoff spot having to be regretfully accepted.

At the time of writing, Wilder’s assured number one in goal now has a bumped up value that stands at £5.8m – as per Transfermarkt – with the Exeter-born ‘keeper now wanting the prize of being a Premier League calibre shot-stopper to come his way.

That is a percentage increase of 190% in just a few months, with Wilder even labelling his standout 25-year-old as “class” earlier in the season, which is hard to argue against when looking up at his gleaming second-tier numbers.

Away from Cooper being put under the microscope, the experienced Blades boss will know a full team effort will get this confident group over the line, with this potentially being his third promotion achievement situated in the Bramall Lane dug-out.

Man Utd considering first offer to sign £53k-p/w ace who may replace Onana

As Andre Onana continues to struggle at Old Trafford, Manchester United have reportedly turned towards a new La Liga target who could replace their error-prone shot-stopper.

Man Utd transfer news

Following a debut season to forget, Onana initially got off to a solid start in the current campaign before mistakes once again began to creep into his game as Ruben Amorim arrived. With a new system in front of him, the former Inter Milan star received less protection than ever and even the thought of a clean sheet seems nothing more than a fantasy.

Mistakes in both the Europa League and against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League haven’t helped Onana’s case, however, and he’s arguably on the list of players Manchester United must replace at the first chance they get this summer.

Amid such financial loss in the last year or so, however, it’s likely that INEOS will have to sell before they can welcome any upgrades, which could include a replacement for Onana.

According to reports in Spain, Manchester United are now considering an offer to sign Juan Musso from Atletico Madrid this summer. The shot-stopper has been forced to play second fiddle behind the impressive and experienced Jan Oblak this season, but could now find himself competing for a starting place at Old Trafford.

Man Utd ready to trigger £62.5m star's release clause if Garnacho leaves

Man United already have their eye on a replacement for Garnacho should he be sold in the summer.

ByBrett Worthington Feb 21, 2025

Already 30 years old, United would be signing experience rather than a rising star which would likely split opinion. Given the current state of Amorim’s side, adding an ageing option may not solve United’s problems for very long. Instead, Musso would be papering over the cracks rather than setting the Red Devils back on course.

Man Utd should avoid Musso gamble

If the Red Devils want to take their seat back at Europe’s top table, then signing Atletico Madrid’s second-choice goalkeeper is not the way they should be going about it. Whilst the £53,000-a-week shot-stopper does have experience, it’s questionable whether he would be an instant upgrade on Onana and the last thing United need is further doubt between the sticks.

Juan Musso for Atletico Madrid.

Instead, INEOS would be better off sticking to their transfer strategy of welcoming rising stars rather than those gradually moving past the peak of their powers. There’s little doubt that they could do with an upgrade on Onana, but it must be the right option.

On course for a mid-table finish in the Premier League, INEOS are in for their biggest window yet in charge of Manchester United. Losing money and making harsh cuts as a result to steal headlines for all the wrong reasons, Sir Jim Ratcliffe simply cannot afford to get things wrong once again.

Whether that means Onana will remain Amorim’s goalkeeper of choice will certainly be interesting to see, as the former Sporting Club boss desperately seeks upgrades across his squad. The Red Devils are likely to be the club to watch when the summer arrives.

Joe Root, Abdullah Shafique promise to 'fight it out' as slow-burn Test reaches end-game

England, Pakistan commit to going for the win after three tough days for bowlers

England and Pakistan have promised a fight to the finish in the first Test at Rawalpindi, in spite of the turgid nature of the pitch, with both Joe Root and Abdullah Shafique insisting that their teams will be pushing for victory over the final two days of the game.England reached the close on day three with the edge in terms of scoreboard position, leading by 158 runs with three Pakistan wickets still to claim. And following two tough days in the field, they returned to the pavilion with a sense of satisfaction after an excellent final session, in which they claimed four wickets including the key scalp of Babar Azam for 136.”It was a brilliant day,” Root told Sky Sports. “That last session … all the hard work we were putting into it came to fruition really. It was very attritional. We had to be very creative throughout the day, had to try a number of different things, keep searching for wickets, and we got our rewards on the back end from some real hard work.”A notable feature of England’s innings was their determination to post attacking fields throughout, with Stokes ringing the changes to keep the batters on their toes, with up to four men around the bat for the spinners, and close catchers in front of the wicket. And as Root admitted, the hunt for breakthroughs had the dual effect of keeping the team’s spirits high in adversity.”That is the most important thing,” Root said. “If you feel like you’ve got no chance it makes it extremely hard, but the way that we stuck to our task, we tried different things, tried to keep it fun and interesting, and I suppose get them to think a bit outside the box as well, and ask questions of what we were trying to do. To be sat here with them so far behind the game, still gives us a really good opportunity to go and win the Test match.”Nevertheless, Pakistan remain very much in the contest after a fine day’s batting, in which Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq both completed their centuries in an opening stand of 225.”Firstly, congratulations to the team England, they have played wonderfully,” Shafique told Sky Sports. “To make 506 [in a single day] is a special total from them. We just kept in mind that we have to play well, because the openers set the tone for the rest of the team. And we set a nice partnership there, which gives our side a good confidence as well.Related

Late wickets give England an opening after Babar leads big Pakistan show with the bat

“It was a good day for the Pakistan side because we have played well,” he added. “And yeah, we have lost some wickets here. But we are in a good position. In the first two days, the wicket is good to bat on but the ball is spinning now, so we’ll get some favour with the wicket in the third and fourth day, so it will be a good contest.”England’s first challenge on day four will be to round up Pakistan’s tail cheaply, but Root was in no doubt about how their own second innings would pan out, given everything this Test team has achieved already under Stokes’ captaincy.”With our team and the way that we play our cricket now, we’ll be making sure we give ourselves a chance of winning the game,” he said. “We’re not really interested in drawing the match. We want to make sure that we give ourselves the best chance of winning it.”If Pakistan are good enough to beat us then so be it, but we’ve got three big wickets to take tomorrow. And then we’ll try and crash a few around and get ourselves to a reasonable total, but I’m sure there’s still a lot of entertaining cricket to be played in the next couple of days.”Shafique, likewise, knows what’s in store, and was adamant that Pakistan are ready to respond in kind when the time comes. “We have also a positive approach about that,” he said. “There is no approach of going for the draw, because the way England play, they will play attacking again. It will give us a good total, so we will fight it out.”

Arsenal can end Merino experiment by starting £46m star who's "like Henry"

Following last night’s draw with Manchester United, it would be fair to say that Arsenal’s Premier League title ambitions are over.

Truthfully, Mikel Arteta’s side were probably out of the race midway through last month, but yesterday’s dismal display put the final nail in the coffin.

It was another game in which the Gunners struggled to put the ball in the back of the net, not that they created an abundance of chances, though.

Moreover, it should be the final match in which Mikel Merino starts up top, as he’s simply not cut out to lead the line, and Arteta now has another option at his disposal.

Why Arsenal's Merino experiment needs to end

The first thing to say is that while this is a critique of Merino’s time leading the line, it’s not a critique of his overall ability, as Arteta has asked him to play a role entirely unfamiliar to him over the last few weeks.

Moreover, while his performances haven’t been good enough overall, his raw output, when looked at in isolation, is not terrible: three goals and one assist in five appearances.

However, football does not work like that, and when you examine those numbers more closely, they aren’t as impressive as they first appear.

For example, two of his goals came in a short spell against relegation candidates Leicester City, while the other one, and his assist for that matter, came in the 7-1 drubbing of PSV Eindhoven, who were unfathomably dreadful last week.

Moreover, in the games against West Ham United, Nottingham Forest and Manchester United – games the Gunners had to win – the Spaniard failed to score or provide a single assist and picked up 5/10 match ratings for each display from journalist Tom Canton.

Finally, as many fans will likely attest, one of the most significant weaknesses of this Arsenal team is their lack of threat on the counter or transition, which the rather slow and immobile Merino only exacerbates when leading the line.

In all, the experienced international should be moved back into midfield for the rest of the season, especially as Arteta now has someone in the team who can replace him.

The Arsenal star who should start ahead of Merino

With Arsenal’s injury list still significant and Raheem Sterling not a player Arteta trusts anymore, the options the Spaniard has to replace Merino up top remain narrow but not nonexistent.

For example, Gabriel Martinelli returned to the fold yesterday evening, and while the £46m-rated star didn’t exactly blow anyone away in his 23 minutes of action, he could and probably should be the man to start down the middle for the rest of the campaign.

There are a couple of reasons for this, with the first being the simple fact that unlike the former Real Sociedad ace and the other option of Leandro Trossard, the Brazilian ace would provide some much-needed pace to the striker position.

Despite being somewhat out of form this season, the former Ituano gem is still the joint-third top scorer for the team and has one more strike to his name than the Belgian despite playing five fewer games.

Lastly, unlike Merino, the Brazilian has experience playing up top, a position pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor reckons he can more than dazzle in.

He’s made 16 appearances for the club there, in which he’s scored nine goals, working out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.77 games.

Ultimately, while there isn’t an ideal solution to Arsenal’s striker crisis at the moment, starting Martinelli down the middle instead of Merino is Arteta’s best option.

Camisa 7 para Yuri Alberto encaminha ponto final na história de Luan no Corinthians

A camisa 7 do Corinthians será usada a partir de agora por Yuri Alberto, que fez a sua estreia pelo Timão na vitória sobre o Coritiba. No entanto, a numeração tinha dono: Luan.
