Caleb Jewell passes 1,000 runs for the season but is only wicket to fall in Derbyshire second innings

Only ten overs were possible on a rainy day at Lord’s•Getty Images
Caleb Jewell reached 1,000 County Championship runs for the season on a rain-ravaged third day of Derbyshire’s clash with hosts Middlesex at Lord’s.Only 10 overs were possible, but it proved sufficient time for the Tasmanian left-hander to reach the landmark with a glance tickled to the fine-leg fence. The 28-year-old, who reached his 1,000 in what was his 22nd innings for the county, also became the only wicket to fall, as Derbyshire closed on 33 for 1, bowled by a beauty from Ryan Higgins which flattened the off stump. The further frustration for Jewell was he hadn’t reached the pavilion steps before the second rain interruption of the morning drove the players off for an early lunch.Only three more overs were bowled, during which Luis Reece survived two huge lbw shouts from Toby Roland-Jones before rain prevented any further play. Both sides are desperate for a win to keep any pressure on second placed Glamorgan in the Division Two promotion race, but it will take creative collaboration between the respective captains to contrive a positive result on the final day.
Richarlison could now make a sensational return to Everton in the January transfer window amid reports that The Friedkin Group are ready to back David Moyes this winter.
The American owners went all in on the Everton boss in the summer, spending big to welcome Thierno Barry, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Jack Grealish and making Tyler Dibling their second most expensive signing of all time. It was a summer fit for a side about to enter a grand new home.
But Friedkin aren’t done there. Reports are now suggesting that they’re looking to solve Everton’s striker problems in 2026 following the struggles of both Beto and summer arrival Barry.
The £27m striker has particularly disappointed. After scoring 19 goals in all competitions at Villarreal last season, he is yet to find the back of the net at Everton. His struggles have also been made worse by Beto’s poor performances.
The towering forward has scored twice in 11 games to once again highlight the Toffees’ struggles in that role. It’s something that Friedkin must solve if they want Moyes’ side to compete in the top-half.
To that end, a number of names have emerged as potential options. Everton’s scouts were reportedly in attendance for Galatasaray’s recent Champions League clash against Bodo/Glimt and watched on as Victor Osimhen netted a brace. There’s no doubt that the Nigerian would hand them the ultimate solution to their problems.
Everton's £45k-p/w talent is now giving "Pienaar 2.0 vibes" under Moyes

Ivan Toney has also been in the headlines. The Al-Ahli forward is aware that he’ll likely need a January switch to the Premier League if he is to get into Thomas Tuchel’s England squad and reportedly wants to work with Moyes. Whether those at the Hill Dickinson Stadium are willing to match his hefty salary is another question, however.
Instead, a familiar face could yet be on his way back to Merseyside.
How Richarlison feels about Everton return
According to TeamTalk, Richarlison would now jump at the chance to join Everton in the January transfer window in what would be quite the return. The Tottenham striker has been forced to watch on from the bench in the last three Premier League games and may need to move on if he wants consistent minutes.
That’s where Everton could come in. Friedkin are ready to go all in for Moyes in January and he desperately needs an impressive striker to lead the line – something Richarlison has been for the Toffees in the past.

Whether Spurs boss Thomas Frank will be open to losing his forward is another question, however.
The Dane told reporters after Richarlison got off to an excellent start earlier this season: “Fantastic he is scoring. The first one is definitely easier to score without being easy, but I have a striker that takes those two chances and helps us win the game.
“He deserves a lot of praise. He was very good against PSG and today he was exceptional, with his work-rate, driving the team, link-up play, hold-up play, just dominating and then the two finishes.
“So happy on his behalf and again performance department, medical department did a top job to build him.”

Victory by 89 runs sees Brave make it five from five, as Sophie Devine stars again

Southern Brave 161 for 6 (Wolvaardt 36, Bouchier 34, Franklin 2-28) beat Oval Invincibles 72 (Villiers 3-17) by 89 runs Southern Brave produced a devastating all-round performance to inflict a record-breaking 89-run defeat on Oval Invincibles at Utilita Bowl to maintain their 100 per cent record and move top of the table.Set 162 for victory, the Invincibles could only muster 72, never recovering from a two-wicket burst by Sophie Devine (2 for 15) in her opening set, the Kiwi castling Meg Lanning with a peach before sending Lauren Winfield-Hill on her way three balls later. When Lauren Bell (2 for 11) struck with consecutive deliveries, utilising the short ball to great effect to induce edges from Alice Capsey and Paige Scholfield, the visitors slumped to 28 for 4 and they were eventually skittled in 83 balls, Mady Villiers picking up 3 for 17 with her off-breaks.Earlier, England duo Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt-Hodge put on an opening stand of 59 after Brave were asked to bat, Bouchier the main aggressor in her innings of 34 from 23 before picking out Scholfield at deep mid-wicket to give Tash Farrant the breakthrough.ESPNcricinfo Ltd
Wyatt-Hodge (26 from 24) was clean bowled by a Phoebe Franklin slower delivery but Laura Wolvaardt kept up the momentum, the South African cruising to a 19-ball 36 including a slog-swept six off Amanda-Jade Wellington but the Aussie leg-spinner had her revenge next ball when Lanning held on to a catch at extra-cover.Freya Kemp was involved in a mix-up which saw Devine run out for 19 but the England starlet made amends with a sparky cameo, smashing two sixes in her 11-ball 24 to post a target which was well beyond the Invincibles’ reach and set up a fifth straight victory for the 2023 champions.Meerkat Match Hero Sophie Devine, who picked up the award for a third game straight at Utilita Bowl, said: “I feel a bit embarrassed because today was a great team performance and there were so many people who should be standing here instead of me. Today was exceptional from this group and I’m really proud of everyone.”The great thing about this group is we’ve spoken at length about different plans and having the ability to be able to execute that is something I’ve found incredibly impressive. That should stand us in good stead come the important part of this tournament.”For us there’s a great focus on each and every game. We’ve got some tough games coming up but we’ll celebrate our success here today. It was a comprehensive win but we certainly know we’ve got a big job to finish off this competition strongly.”
Southampton return to action in the Championship this weekend as they prepare to travel to Charlton on Saturday, and they appear no closer to appointing a permanent successor to Will Still.
TalkSPORT recently claimed that Sport Republic are ‘seriously considering’ appointing current interim manager Tonda Eckert on a permanent basis, after his first two matches in the dugout.
The 32-year-old head coach is set to lead the team out for a third game against Charlton this weekend, and another win would do his chances of landing the role no harm.
Why Southampton should not appoint Tonda Eckert
Eckert deserves credit for providing the team with an instant boost after Still’s departure, as he masterminded a 2-1 win over QPR and a 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.
However, it may not be the right time to appoint him as the permanent head coach because of his lack of experience in first-team management in his career so far.
Eckert had only ever been an assistant manager before his move to join the U21s as their head coach this summer, and he managed nine Premier League 2 matches before his two senior games as the current interim, per Transfermarkt.
Manager Focus
Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.
This means that Southampton have no evidence available to judge what an Eckert team will look like in 15, 20, or 30 games, or if he has the first-team coaching ability to lead a promotion push.
Earlier this month, Michael Carrick was named as a reported contender for the job, and hiring the former Middlesbrough boss could end the Eckert experiment at St. Mary’s.
Why Southampton should hire Michael Carrick
Unlike the German interim, Carrick would arrive on the south coast with bundles of Championship experience as a manager, which may be what the Saints need right now.
The former Manchester United midfielder, who was hailed as an “insanely talented coach” by former Boro player Lukas Engel, has been out of work since moving on from Middlesbrough at the end of last season.
Carrick also has the specific experience of taking over a team in a similar position to the one that Southampton are in now and leading them to a play-off finish, as that is what he did with Boro in the 2022/23 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, the 4-2-3-1 tactician took over with Middlesbrough after they had a dismal start to the season, in 18th place, and led them to fourth and the play-offs.
Southampton are currently 17th after 15 matches, with 18 points on the board, which means that Carrick would arrive in an incredibly similar situation at St. Mary’s. This could make him the ideal candidate for the job, as he has very specific experience for the job that is required.
Some supporters may see that he finished 10th and eighth in his last two seasons with Boro, but the underlying numbers behind those two campaigns suggest that he was let down by his squad.

As you can see in the table above, Boro ranked inside the top six for xPTS in both of those seasons, suggesting that their performances were of a play-off calibre, but the players did not make the most of those performances to pick up the results needed.
This is why Southampton should not be put off by Carrick’s ‘failure’ to get Boro in the play-offs in the last two seasons, and is further evidence that he could be a major upgrade on the inexperienced Eckert.

Southampton could land an upgrade on Will Still by hiring this 4-3-3 manager.
ByDan Emery Nov 12, 2025
Therefore, the out-of-work English manager could be the perfect hire for Southampton for the position that they currently find themselves in, as he has the coaching ability and experience to drive the team back up the table to fight for the play-offs.
Afghanistan have not played a Test since January, when these two sides met in Bulawayo
Firdose Moonda19-Oct-2025
Afghanistan will be playing a Test after nine months•Zimbabwe Cricket
Big picture: Zimbabwe back to Harare International cricket is being played from A to Z this month, quite literally. Afghanistan visit Zimbabwe for the fifth men’s series of October all against the backdrop of the Women’s World Cup. Yes, these sides saw each other as recently as earlier this year; yes, they played a Test then and yes, they are playing a Test now.Despite not being part of the World Test Championship, this short tour opens with a one-off Test before three T20Is all squeezed into a two-week window. The T20Is make sense given that both sides will compete at next year’s T20 World Cup and, as things stand, Zimbabwe have no other international fixtures scheduled. Afghanistan are due to host West Indies and New Zealand for T20Is preceding the World Cup but the longest format has barely been on their radar unless it involves Zimbabwe.Since these teams last met in a festive Test series over Boxing Day and New Year, Afghanistan have not played a Test while Zimbabwe have featured in eight. Only one of those matches went well – victory in Sylhet – and they’ve lost four of their last six by an innings and plenty. The players will want to show they have learnt from those chastening defeats.Related
Rashid rested for one-off Test against Zimbabwe, will return for T20Is
Belgium-born Antum Naqvi set for Zimbabwe debut
Not only will Zimbabwe enjoy home comforts for this game, but they will return to the ground considered their primary home: Harare Sports Club. The capital has not hosted a Test since 2021 as Zimbabwe played their last nine home games in Bulawayo, all without success. Things haven’t been better at HSC. Zimbabwe last won a Test in Harare in 2013, which is more recent than their 2001 victory in Bulawayo, but far enough in the past for 39-year old Brendan Taylor to be the only Zimbabwean to have played in that match. He is also in the squad for this game.Afghanistan’s long-format history is much shorter. They had not even played their first Test when Zimbabwe last won at home and have only participated in 11 matches since 2018. But they’ve beaten a variety of opposition including Ireland, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, and affirming themselves as the best performing of the so-called smaller nations will be high on the agenda.Form guideZimbabwe: LLLLL (last five matches, most recent first) Afghanistan: WDLLL In the spotlight: Antum Naqvi and Zia-ur-Rehman Zimbabwe’s batting has been their Achilles’ heel after they were bowled out for under 200 in their last four innings so the inclusion of Belgian-born Antum Naqvi holds much promise. Naqvi has recently been naturalised as a Zimbabwean after spending time in Australia and has two years of experience in Zimbabwe’s domestic set-up. A regular No. 4, he could slot into the role left vacant by Sean Williams’ absence for personal reasons and Zimbabwe will hope he shows off the form that saw him become the country’s first red-ball triple-centurion. Naqvi’s most recent exploits are a first-innings 68 and second-innings 108 against MCC last week.Antum Naqvi holds much promise•Zimbabwe Cricket
Without Rashid Khan, who was the highest wicket-taker in the series the last time Afghanistan played Zimbabwe, they will have to look to others in the attack to get the job done. Left-arm spinner Zia-ur-Rehman claimed five wickets in the series earlier in the year and six against Ireland in 2024. He also has 215 first-class wickets at an average of 20.47 and was the third-highest wicket-taker in the Ahmad Shah Abdali four-day tournament earlier in the year.Pitch and conditions: Early seam but lots of runsThere’s been a fair amount of cricket at Harare Sports Club recently, which hosted the Africa Region’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers earlier in the month. It is, however, a venue used to high traffic and should not affect conditions too much. Expect something a little quicker than Queens, with the possibility of early movement for the seamers, but generally good batting conditions. Day time temperatures have been warm in Zimbabwe for early summer and though there is a spot of rain about, it should be pleasant all week.Stats and Trivia: Muzarabani on the riseZimbabwe and Afghanistan have played four Tests against each other, and two in the last ten months. Afghanistan have a 2-1 head-to-head advantage. Blessing Muzarabani is already in Zimbabwe’s top Test five wicket-takers and needs seven more to join Henry Olonga at fourth and nine more to catch up to Paul Strang at third. No Afghanistan batter has scored 1000 runs in Test cricket and the closest to that mark – Rahmat Shah on 970 runs – is out with an injury. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi is 243 runs away.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has now made a major decision on Pedri’s fitness ahead of the Champions League clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this Tuesday.
The Blues will be looking to return to winning ways in the Champions League on Tuesday, having been unable to overcome Qarabag last time out, drawing 2-2 away at the Azerbaijani side, but they should be heading into the game with renewed confidence.
Enzo Maresca’s side have put together a good run in the Premier League, winning their last three matches without conceding, most recently securing a 2-0 win at Burnley courtesy of goals from Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez.
Maresca was particularly happy with his side’s defensive showing, saying after the game: “The way we competed I am very happy.
“To come here and not concede is very difficult. It’s normal to concede something. But overall they only had one real chance. During the game they didn’t have any big chances and during the game we had loads of chances.”
However, the manager will be well-aware that Tuesday’s opposition will be much tougher, and the west Londoners have now been handed a boost heading into the Champions League encounter…
Hansi Flick set to leave Pedri out against Chelsea
According to reports from Spain (via Sport Witness), Pedri is now unlikely to travel to London ahead of Tuesday’s game, as Flick and his coaching staff believe it is not worth risking the midfielder, who suffered a hamstring injury near the end of October.
The 22-year-old is now a serious doubt for the trip to Stamford Bridge, having missed training on Sunday, which will be welcome news for Maresca & co, who need every advantage they can get heading into the game against the reigning La Liga champions.
Lauded as “amazing” by journalist Muhammad Butt, the Barcelona star has been absolutely integral for Barcelona over the past year, regularly displaying his ability to dictate games, set-up chances for his teammates, and drive the ball forward.

That said, the La Liga side are likely to be just as fearful of Chelsea’s midfield, with Fernandez scoring his fifth goal of the season against Burnley at the weekend, while Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has waxed lyrical about Moises Caicedo this season.
As such, Chelsea should no doubt fancy their chances heading into Tuesday’s game, taking on Barca in a competitive game for the first time since a 3-0 defeat at Camp Nou back in 2018.
