Everton fans are not happy to see Mirallas start vs Southampton

Everton are going through their final preparations for the visit to Southampton on Sunday and caretaker manager David Unsworth has named his starting eleven.

It’s a vital encounter, a victory will seem them shoot up the table while defeat will see them hovering just above the relegation zone, leaving any incoming manager quite a task.

Unsworth has made some big changes from Thursday night’s disaster at home to Atalanta but some have survived, including Michael Keane and Kevin Mirallas.

Fans aren’t exactly buzzing to see Mirallas start again, many feeling like he is not the answer when players like Sandro Ramirez and Ademola Lookman are on the bench.

With just 72 minutes of Premier League football under his belt so far this term, does he have enough to test the Southampton defence and help the Toffees pick up all three points?

Three reasons Newcastle must hijack West Brom’s bid to sign Richmond Boakye

According to reports in the Daily Mail, West Bromwich Albion sent a scout to watch Red Star Belgrade striker Richmond Boakye in action in his side’s Europa League clash against Cologne in the Serbian capital on Thursday night.

The 24-year-old didn’t get on the score-sheet in the 1-0 victory for the hosts, but he was part of the team that qualified for the knockout stages of the competition and he may well be a potential target for new Baggies boss Alan Pardew during the January transfer window.

The west Midlands outfit have gone 12 matches without a Premier League win and lie just outside of the relegation zone, and Pardew could look to add a goalscorer to his squad.

The Ghana international has certainly been in prolific form for club and country this term, and it is no surprise that he is attracting admiring glances from English clubs.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is another that will be hoping to make additions to his side in the New Year, with the Magpies having taken just one point from the last 18 available in the top flight.

The Spaniard may feel that adding to his attacking options is a priority, and bringing the centre-forward to St James’ Park could prove to be a shrewd move. Here are three reasons Newcastle must hijack West Brom’s bid to sign Boakye…

They need a striker

Newcastle brought in Joselu from Stoke City during the summer transfer window to boost a frontline already containing Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic, but his arrival perhaps hasn’t had the desired effect in terms of goals and all-round effectiveness.

The Spaniard has scored two Premier League goals – the same tally as central defenders Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark – while Gayle also has two and Mitrovic just the one.

It is clear that the Magpies need another centre-forward option with Mitrovic also possibly on his way out after finding first-team minutes hard to come by following his suspension earlier in the campaign, and Boakye could prove to be the right addition at the right time.

Goals

As we mentioned previously, Newcastle aren’t getting enough goals and they have just 14 in their 15 Premier League matches so far this term.

If that record continues across the season they will likely find themselves in a relegation battle, and they need a striker that will be more prolific than their main starter Joselu has been during the current campaign.

With 22 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions for Red Star Belgrade and a further two for Ghana this season, Boakye has proven that he has the ability to find the net on a consistent basis and the Magpies could certainly do with that finishing ability right now.

Price tag

While Boakye’s contract with Red Star isn’t due to run out until 2020, you get the feeling that he could be available for a reasonable fee in the current market during the January transfer window, and it might be a figure that Newcastle and Benitez can’t afford to turn their noses up at.

Reports in The Mirror earlier this month suggested that the Spaniard may only ask for £20m to spend in the New Year, and if that is the case then someone like the 24-year-old would be a realistic striker option as the former Liverpool boss looks to solve his current side’s goalscoring woes.

Odds shorted on Dele Alli leaving Tottenham in January

It’s fair to say that Dele Alli has struggled to replicate his incredible 2016/17 Premier League campaign this term.

Last season the 21-year-old netted 18 goals and assisted another seven in 37 league appearances, which ultimately led to many corners of the media linking him with a move away from Spurs in the not too distant future.

This term, as Spurs have had to come to terms with playing their home games at Wembley while White Hart Lane is rebuilt, the England international has only managed to scored three and assist three in 15 league outings.

He has struggled to really live up to the hype of last season while the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Christian Eriksen continue to earn the plaudits for Mauricio Pochettino’s outfit.

Some Spurs fans are understandably getting frustrated with Dele Alli’s form at present but it will still come as an unwanted surprise to see that odds on him leaving Spurs in the January transfer window have shortened slightly.

According to Odds Checker, SkyBet have shortened odds on Dele Alli to leave Tottenham in January to just 9/1, with Real Madrid currently listed as 14/1 favourites to sign him if he is indeed allowed to leave.

Of course, it does look extremely likely that Alli will remain at the club until the summer at the very least, with SkyBet’s odds of him staying at Tottenham beyond January at 1/33.

But you just never know in today’s currently transfer market, particularly after Alli – valued at £54million by transfermarkt.com – netted twice in Spurs’ outstanding 3-1 victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League this season.

Are Real Madrid considering an early raid for the midfielder?

World Cup performances should convince Gerrard to offer contract to £3.6m-rated free agent

The Rangers fans in the Transfer Tavern have been keeping a close eye on developments at the World Cup in a bid to identify players their club could sign this summer.

The World Cup is a notoriously difficult place to judge players who have otherwise fallen under the radar whilst playing for their club teams. Even Colombia’s poster-boy James Rodriguez, who finished the 2014 showpiece as the tournament’s top-goalscorer, has struggled to shine for both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in the 4 years which have followed his dramatic arrival on the international stage.

However, in the case of Japanese veteran Keisuke Honda (valued at £3.6 million by Transfermarkt), no such doubts can be had over his technical ability. At 32-years-old the former AC Milan playmaker recently became a free agent after completing a season with CF Pachua in Mexico in which he enjoyed decent success with 12 goals and 7 assists from 33 appearances in all-competitions.

Despite his age, Honda proved that his technical quality remains firmly in tact at the World Cup with a goal and an assist from 2 appearances in the group stage and, after coming on as a substitute during Japan’s gut-wrenching defeat against Belgium, he nearly sent his nation into the quarter-final with a stunning free-kick which had Thibaut Courtois scrambling across his goal to parry the ball wide.

Sure, Honda’s resulting corner ultimately lead to Belgium’s breakaway winner, but the problem for Japan lay within their decision to over commit in a bid to win the game at the death.

Although his involvement in the international tournament arrived purely as an impact substitute, Honda’s contribution illuminated his huge level of guile and intelligence in the final third – two qualities which would hold Rangers in good stead to break the mould in Scottish football next season as they bid to catch Celtic at the top of the SPFL.

Considering he is available on a free transfer, Rangers have nothing to lose by offering him the possibility of a chance to impress in Scotland before he winds down his career elsewhere.

The Flashback: Why today’s England side feels so much like the Italia 90 one

On Wednesday evening, England will take to the field in Moscow for their first World Cup semi-final since 1990.

The ghosts of Waddle and Pearce, Robson and Gascoigne are Mario Kart style marker for this team, and if they manage to go one better than the Italia 90 vintage, only the team of 66 will stand in greater esteem. At least for now.

The similarities to this summer and one 28 years ago are much more obvious, though. That was a time when English football – and the country itself – was at a low ebb, only to be taken to the brink of euphoria by a team capable of uniting the prevailing discord of the time.

It’s also arguably the last World Cup when England caught a genuine bit of luck, playing Cameroon and then Belgium in the earlier knockout stages of the competition in order to make it to a semi-final.

Despite the similarities to this year’s competition, the context of 1990 could not be more different.

English football clubs had been banned from European competition after the Heysel Stadium disaster in 1985, and football was in the process of being sanitised – over the next few years, the Premier League and Sky TV would create a ‘whole new ball game’, by which they meant transforming the English football into a money-making show pony, taking it out of the hands of the working classes. Football became family-friendly – marketed to those with the most money to pay for it.

By now, the idea that there was a transformation at all seems too long ago to remember. The English top flight is no longer a footballing backwater filled with Home Nation players and drained of its best talent, who increasingly looked overseas (or to Scotland) for opportunities to play in European competition. It hasn’t been for decades. These days, it is the most cosmopolitan league in the world and shows no signs of getting less so: indeed, that is probably to the detriment of its own national team.

By the time the 1998 World Cup had arrived, English football was starting to be obviously different to what had gone before. David Beckham’s red card is perhaps the biggest stand-out moment for England at that tournament and the negative reaction the Manchester United player received after that game was gruesome, his fame was the catalyst for a reaction symptomatic of the disconnect emerging between players and fans.

1990 was a very different place for an England footballer.

The names roll off the tongue: David Platt, Gary Lineker and, above all else, Gazza… tears.

If Beckham was the first superstar footballer born to the Premier League, Gascoigne was the poster boy for the old way.

There’s no point eulogising about his natural footballing gifts, but his salt-of-the-earth character lent him perfectly to the mood of the country. Those following on at home and hoping to see their team succeed love a player like Gazza, who was both relatable and entertaining – in every sense of the word.

When he cried, the country cried with him, when he smiled six years later against Scotland at Wembley, they smiled with him, too.

Today’s footballers can arguably never reach those levels of relatability, but strangely enough they aren’t too far away. Social media has seen to that. They capture the zeitgeist and are able to present their personalities to the world, just as Gascoigne and others were able to do in 1990.

In the last 28 years, English football has changed so much that it is unrecognisable. From the teams, the players and the stadiums to even the types of fans.

From one dystopian picture of English football being held hostage by hooligans and ransomed by Thatcherism to another, nearly three decades later, where the game is being cut up for corporations. But once again, England have a team that cuts through all of that to capture the mood of the time.

And in that, these two sides are not that different at all.

Dean Marney could give Aston Villa the tough edge they will need next season

Former Burnley midfielder Dean Marney is training with Aston Villa after being released by the Clarets, and could be snapped up on a free transfer according to The Mirror’s live transfer blog (16/07 10:09).

What’s the story?

The experienced 34-year-old had been at Burnley since 2010 and made over 200 league appearances for the club.

The midfielder couldn’t break back into the team after suffering a serious injury in January 2017 and didn’t feature for the Turf Moor outfit at all last season and was released by the club.

Now according to reports, the hardman is training with Steve Bruce’s Aston Villa who may look to sign him permanently with their current financial troubles meaning they will struggle to sign any players for a fee.

Can he still do it?

At 34 and not having played for quite some time, there are questions hanging over Marney.

Has this been the best World Cup ever? Tell us here and win any World Cup shirt of your choice.

However, Villa don’t have many options other than scouring the market for free transfers and loans, and Marney will offer a lot of experience to Bruce’s side.

It may not be the most exciting signing but unfortunately this is the way it is for Villa at the moment and fans will have to hope Bruce can work a miracle with the players next season.

Domino effect: Barca’s Malcolm deal could mean that Dembele joins Arsenal

In what has been one of Arsenal’s most interesting summers, Arsenal have conducted some great business this window.

Arsenal could still deep into the transfer market if they find a holding midfielder or winger. Steven Nzonzi has been linked with a move to Arsenal in recent weeks, although the club aren’t incredibly keen on stumping up the £35 million needed to activate his release clause.

The club may also try to bring in a winger and have been linked with a move to Ousmane Dembele.

The Frenchman’s Barcelona career hasn’t got off to a great start but it would still take a huge fee to pry him away from Barcelona. However, with Malcolm now joining the Catalan club, a move for Dembele may just be about to heat up.

With Malcolm joining Barcelona for £37 million, Dembele’s future at the club seems unclear, and Arsenal could well make a move, albeit on loan rather than on a permanent transfer.

The Breakdown

Although he’s had a faltering start to his career at Barcelona, Dembele is still one of the best young prospects in Europe.

Due to Kylian Mbappe’s meteoric rise, many have forgotten just how good Dembele is and how superb he was at Dortmund.

The youngster would be an incredible signing, even if only on a season-long loan. Combined with Lacazette, Aubameyang and Ozil, Arsenal could have one of the best attacking lineups in Europe.

Dembele’s introduction to Emery’s team would give Arsenal another world-class talent and make the Gunners one of the favourites to win the league.

What do you think Arsenal fans?

Maia the man to answer Manchester City’s defensive midfield conundrum

Since missing out on Jorginho, Manchester City have been linked with a host of other top midfielders from some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

Real Madrid’s Mateo Kovacic, Juventus’ Miralem Pjanic and Bayern Munich’s Thiago are the names Manchester City are said to be looking at as manager Pep Guardiola looks for a suitable alternative to Jorginho.

However, at what is likely to come as a big disappointment to supporters of the Premier League champions, neither one of Kovacic, Pjanic or Thiago are expected to line up at the Etihad this upcoming season.

The Breakdown

Goal reports Manchester City are not interested in overpaying for any potential Jorginho substitute with the trio of Kovacic, Pjanic and Thiago all having large price tags attached to them.

Guardiola is also adamant on not signing a midfielder of less ability, even at a price significantly less than what Real Madrid, Juventus and Bayern Munich are demanding for their maestros.

If the former Barcelona boss, however, has a change in heart, then he should consider Lille’s Thiago Maia.

Maia, valued at £3.6m by Transfermarkt, is a midfielder whose playing style has been compared to that of Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets.

From deep, the young Brazilian is capable of receiving the ball then starting attacks with his ability to pass through the lines like Busquets, or by marauding past opponents in the middle of the park with his powerful runs.

Maia may not be a name that will have the pulses of Manchester City supporters racing, but the 21-year-old is the ideal defensive midfielder for a Guardiola team.

HYS: Do Rangers need an upgrade on Morelos?

Alfredo Morelos found his first goal of the season on Thursday night, so do Rangers need to sign a new striker before the window closes?

Morelos has come under plenty of fire from fans this summer who feel the striker needs replacing, but he got off the mark for the season against Osijek on Thursday.

The Colombian did superbly well to hold off the Croatian defender, before flicking a delightful James Tavernier cross in for the winner.

Steven Gerrard heaped praise on the 22 year-old after the game, perhaps hoping a little bit of confidence will help him find his best form.

“We’re very happy with him,” Gerrard told RangersTV.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”271323″ player=”12034″ title=”Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus on Football Manager”]

“His application and his work-rate in training, on and off the pitch, has been superb. And I think he got his reward tonight for that. I thought his performance was selfless. He ran his socks off for the team.

The Gers signed Umar Sadiq on loan earlier this summer, but it still feels like they’re missing something up front.

The two strikers are both young, and it’s hard to imagine them combining for enough goals to fire the club past Celtic towards the title.

Morelos is a good player, and his value to the squad is underappreciated, but despite his goal on Thursday Gerrard simply must sign an experienced goalscorer before the window slams shut.

West Ham fans urge Pellegrini to sign Bernard

According to The Mirror, West Ham United have stepped up their interest in free agent Bernard as the Hammers look to bring the attacker to the London Stadium.

Bernard was linked with West Ham earlier this summer, with the 25-year-old available on a free having left Shakhtar Donetsk at the end of last season.

A number of clubs have been credited with an interest in the Brazilian, but it is understood that West Ham are in a strong position to complete a deal.

The attacker – valued at £14.4m by Transfermarkt – won three Ukrainian titles during his time at Shakhtar, whilst his record for the club stands at 28 goals and 35 assists in 157 appearances in all competitions.
