Sadio Mane agrees new contract at Anfield, Liverpool fans react

[ad_pod ]

Over the past 12 months, Liverpool have carried out some important transfer business.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has recruited a handful of players that have strengthened areas on the pitch to help the team launch a serious Premier League title challenge.

As well as bringing in new personnel, the club have tied down some of their current squad to fresh contracts.

Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino have committed their futures to Liverpool, and now Sadio Mane has followed suit.

The Senegal international was the final one of the trio to put pen to paper on what the club’s website describes as a “long-term contract”.

The announcement was made on Thursday evening, and Mane described signing the new deal as the “best decision” in his career.

Check out the video below to see how Brazil fans reacted to being asked how Cristiano Ronaldo would peform for them in a hilarious prank by Playmaker FC…

Understandably, Liverpool fans were delighted by the announcement and plenty took to Reddit to post their thoughts.

Julian Weigl would be the answer to Arsenal’s long standing midfield question

Arsenal’s hunt to line up the perfect replacement for Aaron Ramsey has gathered momentum in recent weeks and it now appears they are interested in going on another spending spree in Germany.

The Gunners are reportedly interested in signing midfielder Julian Weigl, who has been sat on the bench of Borussia Dortmund for most of the season.

According to a report by German publication Sport Bild, via Football London, Arsenal’s head of recruitment, Sven Mislintat, is planning to head to his former club Dortmund again to lure Weigl to the Emirates and join Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who both made the move to North London this year.

A severe lack of game-time this season could tempt the 23-year-old Weigl away from the Bundesliga and the idea of joining a club like as Arsenal should sound promising to him.

Arsenal have been linked with moves for Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata, while Villarreal’s Pablo Fornals has also been on the radar to fill the void once Ramsey leaves at the end of the season.

The Welshman has been told by the club that he won’t be offered a new deal to remain at Arsenal and will leave on a free transfer with Bayern Munich the favourites to secure his services.

Weigl, on the other hand, has had to play second fiddle to Axel Witsel and Thomas Delaney who have both formed part of the Dortmund team who are currently top of the German league and recently beat rivals Munich at the Westfalenstadion.

Whether Arsenal are eyeing the German international as the main replacement for Ramsey remains to be seen as manager Unai Emery might be eyeing more than one addition. If he is however, it could be yet another wonderful signing by the Sven Mislintat regime.

Napoli’s Allan is the perfect signing for Tottenham

[ad_pod ]

Reports suggest Tottenham are chasing Napoli star Allan Marques Loureiro, known as Allan, and the Brazilian international is tailor made for the Premier League.

What’s the story?

According to Calcio Napoli (via Sport Witness), Tottenham are interested in signing Allan in the January transfer window.

It is claimed that the North Londoners will offer up €40m (about £35.5m) for the 27 year-old, though Napoli are against the move.

Tottenham have reportedly been “probing the ground” and scouting the tough-tackling midfielder, after seeing their advances for 21 year-old Amadou Diawara rejected.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”335560″ player=”12034″ title=”FIFA Awards”]

The perfect signing?

Allan earned his first Brazil caps during the recent international break, and fans in Naples will rightly claim it is bizarre that it has taken this long.

While he does not exactly fit the mould of a typical Brazil player, the midfield pitbull would walk into most club teams in the world, as his tackling, pressing and passing is key to allowing the more creative players to work their magic.

The 27 year-old has two assists in Serie A this season, as well as averaging 1.3 key passes and 1.8 dribbles per game, but it’s on the defensive end where he really shines.

Allan averages four tackles per game in the league this season, and that number rises to 4.8 in the Champions League. He has never averaged less than two tackles per game in a season thus far in his career, and his recent display against Liverpool showed exactly what he is capable of against the Premier League’s best.

He made five tackles as Jurgen Klopp’s side failed to register a single shot on target in Naples, and he also completed an incredible 95 per cent of his passes.

Allan is not the most glamorous midfielder in the world by any means, but the Napoli ace has developed into one of Europe’s meanest defensive midfielders over the last few seasons, and he could be the perfect replacement for Mousa Dembele in North London.

So, Tottenham fans, would you back a move for Allan? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…

Joshua Kimmich would be the perfect signing for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City

[ad_pod ]

As Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City revolution steams ahead in train-like fashion, it seems as if very few players could actually improve the team at the moment. There is one player, however, that epitomises Pep-ball and should be bought in at all costs.

A player Guardiola knows well

Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich appears to be a player who suits Guardiola down to the ground. The pair worked together at the Allianz Arena for a while, an experience which the German seems to have benefited from massively.

The 23-year-old plays at right-back mostly, but can play in defensive midfield or centre midfield, a trait which the Spanish boss expects of his full-backs – it is evident in the way that he deploys Oleksandr Zinchenko and Fabian Delph at left-back and in midfield.

Playmaker FC Exclusive: “Wolves absolutely spanked you” – Jermaine Jenas gives damning verdict of Arsenal ahead of North London Derby…

Kimmich is a generational talent with the world at his feet, and is already one of the best defenders in world football even at such a young age.

Would City get him?

If the Citizens are given even the slightest encouragement to make a move for the Bayern star, they will presumably jump at it.

It is becoming a case of the player’s astounding ability that no clubs are really considering making a move for him, similar to way in which no one goes near Lionel Messi as they know Barcelona won’t listen to a word.

However, if one man has the pulling power to bring a player to a club, it’s Guardiola. It is no secret that the former Barcelona boss is in the market for a defensive midfielder to replace the ageing Fernandinho, and Kimmich ticks all the boxes that he would be looking for in any potential signing.

On the other hand, City are one of the richest clubs in the world. Bayern don’t necessarily need the cash, but their old-looking frontline consisting of 34-year-old Arjen Robben and 35-year-old Franck Ribery will take some serious investment to replace.

They could well be tempted by a huge offer from the Premier League champions.

Would you like to see Kimmich at the Etihad? Have your say below…

Opinion: Lookman must pursue Everton exit if Silva does not drop his stubborn act

It is Everton’s upcoming opponents Manchester City who Ademola Lookman scored against on his debut for the club during the latter part of the 2016/17 Premier League season.

Since then, the 21-year-old has gone on to join RB Leipzig on loan with former Everton manager Sam Allardyce failing to find a regular spot for him in the team in the last campaign.

But despite playing extremely well in the Bundesliga with the German side, £18m-rated (Transfermarkt) Lookman still finds himself in a similar situation following his return to Goodison Park.

In Marco Silva’s defence, unlike Allardyce, the Portuguese coach has given Lookman an actual role in the squad, while the Charlton youth product has also made it clear he is happy with life under his new boss.

“He gives me the licence to express myself and that allows me to feel free,” Lookman was quoted saying in Everton’s most recent match programme (via Liverpool Echo). “He wants me to score more goals and get more assists and to always be available, to always be in space and consistently be a threat to the other team. And the support of the fans gives me more confidence to play my football and show what I can do.”

Yet, all things considered, Silva really should probably be giving the forward more minutes given the form of Theo Walcott. The 29-year-old has been poor for some time now — in contrast to Lookman who has looked liked a threat whenever he has played — and it has been surprising to see the former Watford manager persist with him.

Be it another loan move or something more permanent, Lookman should definitely consider an exit away from the club if he is not given a real chance in the starting XI.

West Ham fans are mixed on Gabriel Barbosa interest

[ad_pod ]

According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, West Ham United want to sign Inter Milan forward Gabriel Barbosa.

Gabriel has seemingly got his career back on track at Santos, having scored 27 times in 53 appearances whilst on loan at the Brazilian club.

Inter signed Gabriel from Santos in August 2016, but he has only made 10 first-team appearances for the Italian outfit, scoring just once in the process.

An unsuccessful loan spell at Benfica preceded a move back to Santos, and the forward has certainly found his shooting boots once again.

According to Di Marzio, there is interest from a number of English clubs, but West Ham currently lead the race for the four-time Brazil international.

Gabriel is only 22 years old, and his overall record in professional football stands at 85 goals in 222 first-team appearances.

The West Ham supporters have been offering their views on the interest, and it would be fair to say that the fanbase is split.

A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:

Revealed: 71% of Aston Villa fans think they can keep Abraham

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa won the race to sign Tammy Abraham on loan from Chelsea during the summer, and the forward has been very impressive at Villa Park.

Indeed, the 21-year-old has scored 12 times in 16 Championship appearances, including eight goals in his last six league games.

Abraham’s form has been key to helping Villa move to within touching distance of the playoff positions in the Championship table.

The two-time England international will feel that he is a Premier League player, and it seems likely that he will be operating at that level next season.

We recently asked the Villa supporters whether their club could keep hold of Abraham if they earned promotion to the Premier League for the 2019-2020 campaign.

And 71% of those polled claimed that their team could retain the Englishman’s services for next season if they were able to offer Premier League football.

Exclusive: Midfielder Jordan Nobbs on the Ballon d’Or, Arsenal Women & Arsene Wenger

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal Women are flying at the moment. The Gunners are currently sat top of the Women’s Super League ahead of Manchester City on goal difference, a third WSL title well within their sights with just eight games left to play.

Joe Montemurro’s side suffered their first defeat of the season last time out against the team breathing down the back of their necks, weakening their grasp on first place and heating up the title race.

The added focus on the women’s game at the moment, compared to its neglected past, will be a source of great comfort and happiness for everyone involved, with the likes of Alex Scott going into punditry only strengthening its increasing reputation.

A report from Pitchero shows just how much women’s football has risen in the last few years. The 2013 FA Cup final saw an attendance of 4,988, whereas 45,423 travelled to Wembley to watch the most recent edition earlier this year.

People are definitely starting to take more of an interest in this side of the game. Google searches for ‘Women’s FA Cup final’ have more than doubled since 2015. Viewing figures for those who prefer to watch from the comfort of their own home have also shot up – the 2011 World Cup saw 5.1m viewers, whereas the 2015 edition entertained 12.4m, and Arsenal star Jordan Nobbs is particularly enjoying the rise.

The goalscoring midfielder, who is currently out injured having ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament in the 4-0 win at Everton back in November, kindly took the time to talk exclusively to Football FanCast about her career, her side’s season so far, Arsenal Football Club and much, much more.

Aged 26, it’s quite incredible that Nobbs already has a decade of first-team football under her belt. She’s become synonymous with Arsenal Women, where she has played for the last eight years, but in fact made her senior debut for her hometown of Sunderland back in 2008. Nobbs and the Women’s game in general has come a long way since then.

What do you remember from your debut for Sunderland ten years ago and from your younger playing days?

“Oh god, that’s an intense question! I wish I could remember it but it just seems like such a long time ago! I think when I was young, a main part of my game was my athleticism, so I was always all over the pitch as a young kid. I think most of my memories from when I was really young were when I was playing behind Morrison’s car park for a young girls’ team, and we used to play in an all boys’ league, so they’re my main memories.

“I got into the England squad quite young and everything just snowballed from there. Playing at Sunderland alongside Lucy Bronze, Demi Stokes, Lucy Staniforth, as soon as we didn’t get into the Super League, the drive was there in all of us to do better. To play now for a club like Arsenal is just incredible. It feels like it’s gone fast but hopefully I still have time to improve and develop. “

Playmaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals he would have snubbed Tottenham for Arsenal if they’d come knocking in 2005…

What areas of your own game have changed the most?

“Probably picking where and when to run. In the past I’d either get in peoples’ way or I’d try and do too much, whereas now I think I’m starting to learn when the right time is. Specifically, the start of this season I got nine goals in eight games and I think that’s because I started to be clever with my type of movement. I’ve just got to look after my legs now!”

Since making her aforementioned debut all those years ago, the Women’s game has come a long, long way, and has gained a lot more respect and admiration. We’ve seen that side of football receive more funding, added accolades and provide new inspirations for young, budding female footballers.

How has the Women’s game changed in that time and what has been the biggest change?

“It’s honestly incredible. I love talking about it because I just think its phenomenal how it’s changed and how much support we get now. When I came to Arsenal at the age of 17, we trained twice a week in a little room kind of in the background. Now we’re in a multi-million pound gym, on unbelievable pitches and we have full support from Arsenal.

“As a national team it’s also been able to allow us to compete because we’ve been training every day at our clubs which also improves us as players and as individuals. It’s still not there yet, there’s still a long way to go but it’s taking the right steps forward.”

How will the introduction of the Women’s Ballon d’Or change the game even more?

“It’s about little stepping stones where Women’s faces are getting out there. People are starting to accept it, it’s becoming more normal. Why shouldn’t a woman be winning the Ballon d’Or? It’s incredible that we’re taking these strides forward, but like I said, we still have a little way to go. Not just on the pitch, whether it’s media, sponsorship, awards, if we can keep improving these areas then people will talk about it more normally.

“If this is your dream you can grab it with both hands and run with it and it’s nice to let young girls know that. Not even just football, the way in which Alex Scott has gone into media now as well. Hopefully it can keep developing.”

Arsenal Women have been in fantastic form so far this season, but still face many challenges to become champions this time around. They’ve been much improved from the last campaign, sitting top with 42 goals under their belts – more than the whole of last season – and are well on course to improve on last term’s third place finish.

Are you worried that the recent loss to Manchester City could affect the group psychologically, or have you all bounced back strongly?

“It’s obviously a difficult one. We never want to lose. We accept that we maybe didn’t have our strongest squad but I think the girls have done such a professional job on getting themselves to where they are now. I fully believe that they’ll keep that spirit and keep pushing on.

“The girls are in a great place right now and it’ll be good to regroup at Christmas and go again.”

Do you think it’ll be a two-horse race, or could other teams start catching up in the New Year?

“I’m always going to say no! This league can swap and change so quickly. We’ve witnessed Liverpool being third and then end up winning the title, last year was close between Chelsea and Man City, Birmingham are another team who are creeping up the table, so I think it shows the excitement in the women’s game and how strong it is.

What have been the key differences behind that improvement since last season?

“Obviously Joe (Montemurro), our manager. He came in and he gave us this energy, this very simple foundation to work off and then the freedom within that. I think he understands the role of a footballer very well. Not just on the pitch, you need to know when your team need a break.

“I think he’s been phenomenal coming into this club, developing us and developing me as a player. Obviously the girls have really grabbed onto that and performed very well on the pitch but I think overall you need someone driving you in the right direction and he’s most definitely been that guy.”

If Arsenal could sign any player from the rest of the WSL, who would you like it to be?

“I’m thinking Fran (Kirby) or Ji (So-yun) from Chelsea. It won’t sound bad that I’m including a midfielder will it? You could just knock me out of the team I guess!”

Obviously, having spent 22 years at Arsenal Football Club, the aftermath of Arsene Wenger’s departure from the Emirates must’ve hit the north London club hard. His successor, Unai Emery, has started life in the Arsenal dugout in excellent fashion, and even embarked on a 22-game unbeaten run, but a managerial shake-up of such significance is sure to send shockwaves throughout the whole club.

After Arsene Wenger’s lengthy reign, have the Women’s team also felt the impact of the change in management (and management structure) at the club?

“Not one little bit. From minute one we were fully supported. Trevor (Saving) and Ivan (Gazidis), who has just left, were incredible at coming in, seeing us, speaking to us and letting us know that Arsenal Women are highly on their forefront.”

Have the Women’s Team had any dealings with Emery yet?

“Not personally with him (Emery). We had a chance to meet him when he first came in but I think we all had a game. We’ve all had a chance to meet the two chairman that have come in, they’ve sent me lovely messages about my knee and I think little things like that where they’ve come to Boreham Wood and watched our games. You know that if people like that are supporting you then it’s a great place for Arsenal Women.”

What are your prevailing memories from Wenger’s time in charge?

“I was sponsored by Puma when I first came here and me, Olivier Giroud and Arsene Wenger went in a private jet to an event in Germany and he was one of the loveliest guys, so easy to talk to. A lovely person. It’s all credit to what he’s done here at Arsenal. He’s a true legend within this club.”

The Chalkboard: Does Villa move for Hause suggest Elphick is already about to be ousted from starting XI?

Dean Smith is set to infuriate Tommy Elphick, right after the defender returned from his loan to Hull City, with reports claiming that the Villans are set to complete the signing of Kortney Hause from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

On the chalkboard

The Express and Star reported on Tuesday that 23-year-old Hause is set to become Smith’s second signing since taking charge of the club, following discussions between Villa and Wolves.

Hause joined the Premier League side from Gillingham in 2014, but has struggled for minutes under Nuno Espirito Santo and only featured for the Molineux outfit once during their triumphant Championship campaign.

The League Cup had been the West Ham product’s home this season, featuring in his side’s win over Sheffield Wednesday and defeat to Leicester on penalties – rounding off a total six outings in gold and black over the past 18 months.

Hause is still considered to possess great potential, and the Express and Star’s report suggests that Smith has taken a shine to the defender thanks to being able to play at left-back as well as at centre-half.

Pl>ymaker FC’s Thogden was at the crucial relegation 6-pointer between Bolton and Rotherham. Check out the video below…

Elphick back and out already

Aston Villa only took up their option to recall Elphick from his loan to Hull at the end of December to help cover a lack of depth in Smith’s defensive roster.

It could have acted as the 31-year-old’s second chance for a future at Villa Park, before his contract expires in the summer, and the 6 foot 2 centre-back impressed on his return against Queens Park Rangers.

The former AFC Bournemouth ace led the backline as James Bree, James Chester and Alan Hutton joined him against Steve McClaren’s side, recording a WhoScored match rating of 7.7 – far better than his defensive colleagues.

His rating consisted of an 82% pass success rate, winning 11 aerial duels and recording two interceptions.

Tuanzebe still missing

Should the expected deal for Hause go through, the 23-year-old will likely line up alongside Chester in Smith’s back four, at least until Axel Tuanzebe returns from his lengthy stint on the sidelines after foot surgery.

Although Smith would be relying on potential over proven quality, Hause should offer his new manager a defender competent at challenging for the ball in the air – which Elphick excels at – blocking the ball and playing out from the back.

Who should Smith field at centre-back? Let us know in the poll below…

Sunderland should make a move for Jamille Matt if they lose Josh Maja in January

[ad_pod ]

Jack Ross should make a surprise move and turn to Newport County’s Jamille Matt if Sunderland decide it would be best to cash in on Josh Maja.

What’s the word?

Maja’s future at the Black Cats continues to be shadowed in doubt after the Tyneside outfit handed the 20-year-old an ultimatum, stating that he either signed a new deal or they would look to sell him in the January window.

The academy graduate left it until the last moment to inform the club that he had chosen to stay put and sign a new deal, but Stewart Donald, the club’s owner, announced on Friday that he would not be putting pen to paper.

Sunderland could now look to cash in on Maja, as his contract expires in the summer, with numerous clubs across the English leagues reportedly interested in his services.

Should Donald accept one of the offers, Ross would be weak on goalscoring talent, with Maja currently not only the Black Cats’ top goalscorer but also the second most productive striker in League One.

An option to seriously consider comes in the form of League Two striker Matt, who found the net in Newport’s shock FA Cup win over Premier League Leicester City on Sunday.

What could he offer?

Despite currently plying his trade in the lowest tier of professional football, 29-year-old Matt proved that he has it within himself to tackle defences in higher divisions.

The Foxes backline could not cope with the 6 foot 1 hitman, who was a constant nuisance for the likes of Premier League winners Wes Morgan and Jonny Evans, who could only watch on as Matt won six aerial duels against them.

The Exiles forward also found the net with his only shot of the game, putting the ball beyond Danny Ward in goal after 10 minutes, to take his season tally to 14.

Matt has one-and-a-half years remaining on his current contract at Rodney Parade, having joined on a free transfer in the summer, and comes with a Transfer, arkt valuation of £135,000.

Would you take Matt as Maja’s replacement? Let us know in the poll below…
