Liverpool’s Curtis Jones looks at ease against Everton in the FA Cup

It was a much-changed side that Jurgen Klopp selected against Everton in the third round of the FA Cup.

Overall, the 52-year-old brought no less than nine fresh faces into his side following the Reds’ 2-0 win against Sheffield United on January 2nd. Included in the first XI were youngsters such as Nathaniel Phillips, Neco Williams, Harvey Elliot and Curtis Jones.

That quarter provided plenty of positives. The former two, for example, were part of a back four that didn’t concede, whilst Elliott provided three key passes from his position on the wing.

It was 18-year-old Jones that stood out, though. His goal was the only one of the match, and what a strike it was, with the ball curling into the top corner off the woodwork from around 25 yards out. That moment in particular will grab the headlines, but it was just one facet of an overall positive display.

The Liverpudlian played the entirety of the 90 minutes, and looked composed throughout. He managed to land 88% of all of his attempted passes. Of the Anfield men who started, he led the way in that respect. In terms of key passes, he made three, which was as many as Elliott and Divock Origi. No-one else from either side managed as many.

Can you name the result these iconic Liverpool images belong to? Give it a go now…

He also won two of the five ground duels he contested and one of the two aerial ones as well – there is still room for improvement there, of course, but it shows that even though he is a teenager, he was not outmuscled by what was effectively a full-strength Toffees outfit that had won two of their previous three matches since new boss Carlo Ancelotti took over.

The competition for places for Liverpool is fierce – you would expect nothing less from a side that is European champions and lead the Premier League by no less than 13 points whilst also possessing a game in hand. Considering their strength, Jones would usually be penned in as one for the future. This is a teenager who is clearly already too good for the development sides – he has 13 goals in 16 games at that level this term after all – and displays like the one against the Toffees show that he already has what it takes to be a valuable member of Klopp’s first-team squad.

The former Borussia Dortmund manager has already insinuated that little to no business will be completed by the league leaders during the January transfer window. Even if he does decide he needs to dip his hand into the winter madness, though, Jones’ left-wing position is now unlikely to be an area which is targeted.

Everton fans discuss Richarlison after FA Cup defeat against Liverpool

Loads of Everton fans on Twitter have been discussing Richarlison after his performance in the 1-0 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

The Toffees may have actually been slight favourites to advance to the next round of the FA Cup when the teams were submitted given Carlo Ancelotti went full strength and Jurgen Klopp blooded a number of youngsters, but it didn’t turn out that way.

Richarlison was one of the players in the Italian’s starting XI for the Merseyside derby, and he started behind Dominic Calvert-Lewin in what was essentially a 3-4-3 formation, that switched to more of a 4-4-1-1 system when they were defending.

The Brazilian has impressed alongside Calvert-Lewin up top in recent weeks assisting one against Newcastle and scoring against Manchester City, and has nine goals in 26 appearances in all competitions this term.

However, he struggled out wide against the Reds and failed to get the better of 18-year-old Neco Williams at right-back for the hosts.

It’s the dawn of a new decade in the Premier League, but how much do you know about the last 10 years?

Many Everton supporters chose to criticise the 22-year-old for his display post-match, with one even saying his “attitude stinks” – slightly harsh given the work-rate and defensive running he is often willing to put in.

However, not every fan agreed with the criticism even if the man who cost an initial £35m when he signed in 2018 wasn’t at his best at Anfield.

One suggested that the attacker is destined to go on to play at a higher level than Everton, and if he finds some more consistency it would be no surprise if he did – he already has six goals in 17 caps for Brazil after all.

Wolves target Jude Bellingham is a level above homegrown success Morgan Gibbs-White

Wolverhampton Wanderers are desperate for additions this month. That’s hardly a secret.

But unlocking the door to the January transfer window is something that the club have been longing for, for quite some time.

Those that hold the key are most notably manager Nuno Santo, sporting director Kevin Thelwell and the ownership group Fosun, although whether they have the right solution is dependant on so many more factors out of their control.

That said, the Portuguese boss has made it clear he would like to bolster his squad while The Athletic’s Tim Spiers believes they expect to sign two attack-minded players in the next few weeks.

One player they have been linked to this week, who isn’t a forward of sorts, is Birmingham City starlet Jude Bellingham, according to Alan Nixon of The Sun.

At the age of just 16, he has become a regular in the Championship under Pep Clotet, featuring 23 times where he has scored three goals and assisted one more from midfield, per Transfermarkt.

Signing him would certainly go against the usual principles of how the club operates their transfer business as they often try to find a bargain from a foreign league in Portugal or France, or use the services of super-agent Jorge Mendes.

Although, if there’s any player to break that trend then it has to be this talent teenager, especially as he will firstly meet the long-term ambitions of the ownership and secondly is a level above Wolves’ current third choice central midfielder, one of their own, Morgan Gibbs-White.

When comparing Bellingham’s current season to Gibbs-White last season – it’s fairer to take that as a sample as the 19-year-old has missed the bulk of this season through injury – it’s clear to see there’s only one winner.

The Birmingham City prospect is a level above. Per WhoScored, he averages more way more tackles (2.2), interceptions (1.1), shots (1.1) and even dribbles (1) per game.

Bellingham has also been likened to Dele Alli by current teammate Dan Crowley, who came through the system at Arsenal, so he definitely knows a young talent when he sees one. He said:

“I’ve been at Arsenal and seen what you have got to be like to play there. Jude’s got that chance. I used to play with and against Dele Alli and he reminds me of Dele. He’s smart and the fact he has so much to learn and playing like that it felt just like Dele. Dele progressed in the league and I think Jude can be up there. Dele is quite tall and so is Jude. Dele with the ball at his feet is really good. I’ve not seen a young lad who is so tall and big so good with his feet.”

Call yourself a Wolves expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?

Manchester United are said to have put a bid of just £12.5m in for him this month (according to the Mirror) so if he’s available for anything near that, then Wolves must follow suit.

Gibbs-White has played 64 times for the club and only managed one goal, which is indicative of his unsuitability to Nuno’s system. The 16-year-old can add something much better to that central midfield position than their own homegrown talent.

Meanwhile, Tim Spiers has provided an update on Nuno Santo’s transfer plans this month…

Tottenham fans are frustrated the club still hasn’t signed a striker

Tottenham have been without a senior natural striker in the squad since Harry Kane picked up an injury against Southampton at the beginning of the month, and it is unsurprising that they have scored just three goals in the four games since – all of which came against Championship Middlesbrough.

They drew a blank against Watford, though Ignacio Pussetto stopped the ball from crossing the line by millimetres. However, five shots on target shows the weakness in attack and therefore fans wanting a striker urgently are well within their rights to make such demands.

The likes of Luka Jovic and Krzysztof Piatek [Il Giornale via Calciomercato.com] have been linked with moves to North London but so far nothing has come off for Spurs, leaving many fans disillusioned.

Norwich are the visitors on Tuesday and though the club has tried to build up excitement for the match, it has been met with several supporters calling for a striker to arrive.

Son Heung-min started up-front at Vicarage Road and will likely do so once more against the Canaries, but the fact that he is seven games without a goal is a bit of a concern.

It is little surprise that fans have low expectations due to their lacklustre attack, and it seems that their concerns will remain until a striker is brought in.

The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?

Given that Spurs are also competing in the Champions League it is rather unforgivable that there is only one natural striker in the senior squad, and now he is injured Daniel Levy should be doing all he can to ensure that Jose Mourinho is able to bring in a replacement.

One fan has called for Jovic to arrive from Real Madrid, and he might be suitable due to the fact he scored 27 goals last season for Frankfurt and could be available on loan.

The Watford game may have been useful in showing Mourinho exactly what he needs, and he could target his signings accordingly with one man in mind.

Liverpool fans blast Takumi Minamino after the 2-2 draw against Shrewsbury

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to blast Takumi Minamino, following his performance in the 2-2 draw against Shrewsbury on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side went 2-0 ahead after a goal from Curtis Jones and an own goal from Donald Love, although two strikes from Jason Cummings saw Shrewsbury force the European champions into a replay at Anfield.

Minamino in particular was quite ineffective.

The Japan international – making only his third appearance for Liverpool since his £7.25m move from RB Salzburg – had no shots on target, recorded no dribbles and also had four unsuccessful touches – he was also dispossessed once.

Minamino also committed two fouls and failed to make a single tackle, block or interception before being withdrawn in the 85th minute.

The criticism of the 25-year-old is harsh, seeing as he is still fairly new on Merseyside and is certainly still adapting to the English game – he should be afforded a few anonymous performances.

Let’s see how the Liverpool fans on Twitter reacted to his display…

To kick off the reaction, this Liverpool supporter with the username @ClinicalGerrard said that Minamino is “actually so bad” before using crying emojis to emphasise their point – harsh.

Elsewhere, these two fans also criticised the attacking midfielder, although one did so in more scathing fashion than the other.

Chris Wright simply said that the Liverpool No.18 “needs to improve” and “looked frustrated” on Sunday, before asking if Klopp needs to take him out of the side and help him adapt.

Contrastingly, ‘GDon’ said “even Iago Aspas had a better impact” than the Japan international, before saying that 16-year-old Harvey Elliott is “ten times the player”.

Meanwhile, Ahmet feels that Minamino is “just a ploy signing” to improve the Merseysiders’ status in Asia, before adding that he “isn’t good enough for the league”.

Furthermore, Hashim said that Liverpool’s latest signing “looks awful” but at least acknowledged that it’s still early days in his career at Anfield.

Lastly, and quite humorously, James said that Minamino “looked like a penguin in a jungle” against Shrewsbury, emphasising just how out of place the new boy looked on Sunday.

Man Utd make Kalidou Koulibaly a top priority for the summer

According to the Mirror, Manchester United are ‘hell-bent’ on bringing Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly to Old Trafford this summer.

What’s the word?

It’s claimed that Red Devils boss Ole Gunner Solskjaer sees the towering 28-year-old as a perfect partner to his new skipper Harry Maguire, so much so that he will become their top priority when the transfer window re-opens at the end of the season.

United will have to battle Premier League rivals Chelsea as well as European heavyweights Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, as per the same source.

Any potential deal would cost upwards of £90m, on top of his wages, whilst it could also hinge on whether or not the club are competing in the Champions League next season.

It is also believed that he would become the highest-paid player at the club.

Managerial legacy

If Man Utd can clinch the Senegal international, then they would certainly be on their way to completing a successful rebuild – one that can be the mark left behind by Solskjaer’s legacy as a manager at the club.

They have let go of the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Ashley Young and Romelu Lukaku, who were a mix of the old guard and players favoured by previous managers – whilst the addition of Maguire in the summer signalled that the club were certainly trying to resolve some problematic areas.

Solskjaer has also since added Bruno Fernandes to his ranks, but they are still a long-term striker and another central defender away from being on the right path.

Bringing in Koulibaly would put them on that track, there’s no doubt – Phil Jones is often the scapegoat for fans, and the injury-stricken Eric Bailly have their question marks, and he appears to be an upgrade on Victor Lindelof too.

The 28-year-old has recorded more tackles (2.6), interceptions (1.1) and blocks (0.9) per game than the Swede domestically this season.

Is life under the Glazers really that bad? Maybe this quiz will change your minds, Man United fans…

Solskjaer made his mark as a player and is yet to as a manager, and this addition would help kickstart his managerial credentials for sure.

Liverpool’s Neco Williams has benefitted from facing Sadio Mane in training

Despite being without every single senior member of the first-team squad, Liverpool were still able to beat Shrewsbury on Tuesday night at Anfield in their fourth-round FA Cup replay.

The Reds only won 1-0 in the end, but the scoreline does not illustrate just how dominant they were. Their opponents managed just 30% possession and could not even muster a single shot on target as the European champions’ U23s got the job done in the absence of both the older pros and manager Jurgen Klopp.

In front of a packed house, many starlets impressed, and Neco Williams was one of those who did his future hopes no harm. The Wales U19 international took up a spot usually occupied by Trent Alexander-Arnold, arguably the best in the world, but he didn’t look out of place.

Can you name the result these iconic Liverpool images belong to? Give it a go now…

From a defensive point of view, he didn’t embarrass himself, winning six out of 12 ground duels and three out of seven in the air. He also managed one clearance and two tackles. It was going forward where he particularly stood out, though. All in all, he had five shots, completed one of the two dribbles he attempted and won three fouls, whilst Ro-Shaun Williams turned into his own net from the teenager’s dangerous cross-field pass.

It was a fantastic display from the youngster, but it perhaps shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. Playing for the Reds, he is used to facing some of the best players on the planet – the day before each game, the starting XI will play another XI in training, meaning that Williams usually has Sadio Mane opposite him. Facing one of the world’s best wingers on a weekly basis can only be good for his development.

His showing is also likely to be good news for Klopp in the long run. As it stands, the 52-year-old does not have too many options at right-back. Alexander-Arnold, of course, is a star and one of the team’s most creative force as his 10 Premier League assists show, but beyond him there is a lack of depth. Joe Gomez has been used there in his absence, but the eight clean sheets in nine league matches at centre-back alongside Virgil van Dijk indicates that he is far more comfortable there. Other than that, it would likely be utility man James Milner.

Now, though, Klopp has Williams at his disposal. In the summer, Liverpool may look to boost their squad and add more depth – that, though, will cost money. Even a back-up option can be expensive – just look at Joao Cancelo, for example. The Portugal international has started just seven Premier League matches this term, but cost Manchester City £27.5m plus Danilo – a full-back who himself cost £26.5m and played just 34 times in the top flight in two seasons at the Etihad.

However, the youngster who once turned down Manchester United can fill up that back-up option, saving his club a potential pretty penny. Michael Edwards has done a fantastic job since joining Liverpool in 2016. During his stay at the club, they have a net transfer spend of just £74.41m – rather astounding for a side that is now 22 points clear at the top of the Premier League. That has been possible due to some astute business, such as signing Mohamed Salah and Mane – two players who are now worth £135m each according to Transfermarkt – for under £40m. With Williams, he will have no need to go out and bring in a new recruit.

Klopp was criticised for his actions by giving himself and his players the game off, but it has ended up paying dividends in both the short and, potentially, long-term.

Meanwhile, one thing stopped Liverpool signing this Bundesliga star in 2017.

Liverpool fans react to Anfield expansion update

Given that Liverpool are arguably the best team in the world right now – they are the Club World Cup champions after all – you would expect them to have a stadium to match their on-field exploits.

However, although Anfield has been rightly hailed by managers like Pep Guardiola for its atmosphere, it still lags behind in terms of capacity. With a possible highest attendance of 54,074, that only puts them fifth on the list of grounds in England (sixth if you include Wembley), whilst it is only 38th in the whole of the continent.

Much harder than you’d think… Can you name Liverpool’s top scorers for each of these 25 seasons?

That will change by the 2022/23 season, though. It has been reported that the planned expansion will be finished by then, with an extra 7,038 seats to be added. That will take the capacity to over 61,000.

Dave O’Connell shared the news on his Twitter page, as you can see below.

This has got the fans reacting in their droves, and a couple seemed delighted by the update.

This is exactly what the Merseyside outfit need to take them to the next level – a stadium to rival some of the biggest and best in terms of capacity.

Not everyone is that positive, though. There are some who believe the increase in seats is not enough.

Slowly but surely, Liverpool fans. This is a step in the right direction, but it is almost impossible to add an extra 20,000-30,000 seats in one go. These things take time.

Others don’t believe this will make it any easier to get tickets.

It’s no wonder it is so difficult to see Liverpool live at Anfield – it is probably one of the hottest tickets in world football right now.

Everton fans react as Tom Davies hangs up his lilac shoes

Tom Davies is developing a reputation for his ventures away from the pitch and that’s mostly due to his unusual stylistic choices.

The young Everton midfielder never shies away from putting on a brave look and that results in some outfits that could be described as a little over the top, to say the least.

Did he really play for us?! No Everton fan has managed to name all of these obscure Toffees players….

Just recently, he was pictured in New York alongside Dominic Calvert-Lewin wearing lilac coloured which seemingly caught the eye of many, albeit in a rather bad way, if some of the comments below his Instagram snap are anything to go by.

And now, in a sign of protest or just for the sake of stirring the pot even further, Davies has shared an image that depicts him hanging up his purple boots, suggesting he’s likely not to wear them again.

Needless to say, this tongue-in-cheek gesture had many fans absolutely buzzing.

And that’s the thing about Davies which fans seem to love – he doesn’t really care about other people’s opinions all that much and is a unique character to have in the squad.

One fan said that she loves him for that exact same reason…

Still, even though they might support his excessive fashion choices, these fans believe the divisive shoes simply have to go.

And honestly, that would probably be for the best…

Maguire and Mata comment on McTominay’s Instagram post

Manchester United enjoyed a resounding 5-0 win against Club Brugge in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Scott McTominay is one who will have been especially thrilled by the evening’s events, as he showed on Instagram following the final whistle, with this being his first start after missing 12 games in all competitions due to a knee injury.

Not only did the Scotland international make it through 72 minutes, but he also put in a very convincing performance, with the big moment being his clinical finish to secure United’s third goal of the game.

Aside from that, he registered one tackle, two interceptions, one dribble and one key pass, while maintaining a pass success rate of 94%.
