The Chalkboard: How Ross fixed his own mistakes to turn Sunderland around

[ad_pod ]

Jack Ross made some glaring errors at Wembley on Sunday, but the Sunderland boss proved exactly how good he is by fixing his own mistakes in a matter of just three days.

Playing away at Accrington Stanley three days after a devastating penalty shoot-out defeat is no walk in the park, and a loss on Wednesday to further damage the hearts and minds of the Black Cats squad may just have ruined the season.

Instead, a Ross masterclass made things easy for his side, potentially saving their entire push for promotion.

Ross’ men were first to every ball, clinical when they needed to be and solid defensively, so how did the boss turn it around after such a disastrous tactical display against Portsmouth?

What did he do wrong at Wembley?

Quite simply, Ross was too cautious at Wembley, sacrificing all his side’s pressure by making two very defensive substitutions early in the second half with the score at 1-0.

By bringing off both Grigg and Lewis Morgan in quick succession, the Scot invited Pompey to attack his side, and it eventually yielded the equalising goal.

Speaking of Grigg, the Northern Irishman has been crying out for more support for some time now, which was another error Ross made at Wembley, leaving the January arrival isolated on the massive pitch right from the first whistle.

He switched things up on Wednesday though, and the boss deserved to reap the rewards for recognising his mistakes and fixing them.

What did he change?

By starting Wyke, Ross immediately gave his side a focal point at the Crown Ground, something they simply didn’t have at Wembley.

Grigg was suddenly not surrounded by two colossal centre backs all the time, leaving the goalscoring machine free to make the quick little bursts into space from which he scores most of his goals.

Wyke meanwhile did not have the goalscoring pressure that comes with being the lone centre forward, something he has struggled massively with this season, and he played much better for it, getting involved in nearly every Black Cats attack.

The boss also switched things up in midfield, recognising that the ageing legs of Lee Cattermole and Grant Leadbitter could become exposed playing with two men up front, so opting instead for the all-action duo of Max Power and Dylan McGeouch.

Power and even more so McGeouch both had fine performances, but it is the manager that deserves all the praise. To not only fire up his players after such a heart-breaking setback but also get everything spot on tactically shows immense promise from a young manager who is still learning on the job.

Rangers fans praise reserves after dramatic comeback win

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Rangers fans have been reacting to some positive news from the club, as the reserve side came from two goals down to beat a strong Hibernian XI on Monday.

Rangers have fallen behind in the title race since the beginning of March, as Steven Gerrard’s side have struggled to turn dominance of the ball into goals and wins.

Still though, there is a real feeling that Gerrard’s reign is a work in progress, a work that is going to bring success eventually.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

The gaffer will look to trim and reshape his squad again this summer after a busy transfer window last year, but could he have some gems in the youth set-up that will save him some money?

The young Gers played a Hibs side with several first team players in it on Monday, and Glenn Middleton’s first half brace levelled things up after Hibs had shot out to an early 2-0 lead.

Stephen Kelly then decided the game with an inch-perfect free kick, and fans are heaping praise on their youngsters.

Could the likes of Middleton, Kelly and Cameron Palmer, who captained the side, make an impact in the first team next year? The Twitter reactions down below are impressed…

Wolves fans on Twitter react to anniversary of obscene Ruben Neves strike

[ad_pod ]

Wolverhampton Wanderers fans have been reacting to a special club memory on Thursday, the one-year anniversary of a huge moment in their promotion back to the Premier League.

It was exactly 365 days since Ruben Neves’ obscene volley in the 2-0 home victory over Derby County, a night of three points that took Nuno Espirito Santo’s closer to the Sky Bet Championship title.

To celebrate, the Wanderers posted a video on Twitter of the remarkable strike and proclaimed that the day should be named in the Portuguese’s honour.

The “once-in-a-lifetime goal” is still clearly a fresh memory for Wolves supporters, despite all the side’s success this season in the English top flight and their march to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Some were still in disbelief about the strike a year on, while another articulated that they had never seen a better goal live and that Molineux had never witnessed a more spectacular strike, while one more urged the central midfielder to recreate the worldie at the weekend.

وضح جناح الفريق الأول لكرة القدم بنادي مانشستر سيتي، رياض محرز، حقيقة تصريحاته بشأن إمكانية الانتقال إلى باريس سان جيرمان في المستقبل.

The Chalkboard: Wolves have a big problem when it comes to Adama Traore

[ad_pod ]

Wolverhampton Wanderers face a dilemma when it comes to getting the best out of Adama Traore, who arrived at Molineux from Middlesbrough last summer.

The Chalkboard

It was not too much of a surprise when Traore left Boro ahead of the 2018-19 campaign. Wolves were the team who paid the attacker’s £18m release clause, which made him the club’s record signing at the time.

A speedy winger, Traore showed plenty of promise for Barcelona B, but struggled at Aston Villa before making the move to the Riverside Stadium.

Now with Wolves, it was supposed to be a big campaign for the 23-year-old, but it has just not happened.

Indeed, he has started just eight Premier League matches this term, whilst he has contributed just one goal and one assist in 26 top-flight games for Wolves.

Even against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday when Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were struggling, Traore was only introduced in the 84th minute.

Why has Traore struggled?

Well, he has been unable to hold down one position.

Indeed, according to Transfermarkt, Traore has played right midfield, right wing, centre-forward, left wing, as a second striker and at wing-back this term.

The former Spain Under-21 international just cannot be trusted to operate as a striker due to his wayward finishing, whilst Wolves’ preferred 3-5-2 formation makes it difficult for him to start as a wide player.

Traore’s physical attributes make him, on paper, a decent choice for one of the wing-back spots, but he is not anywhere near good enough defensively to play that role on a regular basis at the top level.

In this era of ‘big 6’ dominance, has finishing 7th become as good as winning a trophy? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

Boasting blistering speed and incredible power, Traore would worry any defender at any club in world football.

The attacker is yet to really find himself as a player, though, and Wolves really need to have a long think about his future at the end of the current season.

The Chalkboard: How Gennaro Gattuso would change Newcastle United

[ad_pod ]

Reports have emerged from Italy that Gennaro Gattuso has met up with super-agent Jorge Mendes in relation to possibly taking the Newcastle United job if Rafael Benitez leaves.

Why might he be needed?

The reason Gattuso might be required at Newcastle is because Benitez’s contract expires at the end of June and there has still not been an agreement reached between the Spaniard and Toon owner Mike Ashley.

Negotiations have dragged on and yet still Benitez says they are no closer to an agreement, with the main issues appearing to be the transfer budget and internal upgrades such as training facilities.

Things are also not going too well for Gattuso in Milan either as he and Director of Football Leonardo are said not to see eye-to-eye, and if the Rossoneri miss out on Champions League then that could be the end of his reign at the San Siro.

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals why Tyne-Wear is a more intense derby than anything London can offer – check out the video below….

How would Gattuso change Newcastle?

If the former World Cup winner were to take over on Tyneside then expect a change in formation, Newcastle currently play 3-4-2-1 and last season they played 4-2-3-1.

Gattuso though plays 4-3-3 almost exclusively with AC relying on Tiemoune Bakayoko to break up play and then distribute it to Milan’s box-to-box midfielders.

These are usually Giacomo Bonaventura and Franck Kessie playing as a all-action midfielders and it is these two that are crucial to everything the side do.

If the Italian were to take over Newcastle it would likely mean that Ki Seung Yeung or Sean Longstaff would play in front of the back four and then Gattuso would need to buy at least two box-to-box midfielders, such is the importance of their role in his system.

This is because Isaac Hayden will most likely leave and Jonjo Shelvey is not suited to a box-to-box role due to his low work-rate.

The other key change would be the role of Newcastle’s wingers, for Milan the wingers play on the opposite side to their strong foot with over-lapping attacking fullbacks, allowing the defenders to race into the gaps that open up when they cut inside.

At the moment Matt Ritchie is playing left-wing-back but he is most suited to playing on the right wing and cutting in on his favoured left.

Suso currently plays that role for Milan and though Ritchie is not as talented as the Spaniard he could certainly fulfill the same role in any Gattuso Newcastle side thanks to his excellent delivery.

A change to 4-3-3 however, may not be ideal for Miguel Almiron or Ayoze Perez as they are both not natural wingers or inverted wingers and both have operated well in their free roles behind Rondon. If they were shifted out wide it would probably reduce the effectiveness of both.

If Gattuso were to arrive, figuring out how to get the best out of Almiron and the red-hot Perez must be his top priorities, because his current system simply would not allow them to thrive.

Tottenham fans want Man United to sign Trippier

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United are eyeing a summer swoop for Tottenham ace Kieran Trippier, and fans of the north London outfit are praying the move happens.

According to The Mirror, United are lining up Trippier as an alternative to Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The Red Devils are in need of several reinforcements this summer, including at right back, where Wan-Bissaka’s incredible breakout season surely makes him the number one choice.

The report claims Trippier is of interest too though, due to Crystal Palace’s reluctance to lose their rising star.

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals what Lasagne-Gate was really like for Tottenham’s food-poisoned stars – Check out the video below…

Mauricio Pochettino appears to be open to revamping his full back ranks a little bit, with the likes of Ryan Sessegnon linked, so could that overhaul start with offloading Trippier?

Even at 28, his success with England and proven Premier League experience would command a respectable transfer fee, a sum which can of course be reinvested into better, younger players.

Spurs fans are absolutely loving the news, and they’re particularly excited by the prospect of tricking United into signing Trippier to then go an use the funds received to sign United’s first target, Wan-Bissaka.
