[ad_pod ]West Ham United fans have had a mixed reaction to Manuel Pellegrini’s assessment of their Premier League season.

The Hammers’ Twitter account posted a tweet quoting the manager on Monday, with Pellegrini saying: “For the first season, to finish in the top 10 is not bad. We have improved in points, goals scored and goals conceded. So compared with the last season we have grown a step.â€

The east London club ultimately finished 10th after a fine late run of form which saw them win three games on the bounce, against bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur – becoming the first away team to win at their new stadium – Southampton and Watford.

They were, however, unable to mount a sustained challenge for a top-seven finish which, after Manchester City’s FA Cup victory, would have seen them qualify for the Europa League. Nuno Espirito Santo’s impressive Wolves side took the ‘best of the rest’ honour instead.

And fans have been left split on the Chilean’s assessment, as they look to push on again in the 2019-20 season, and potentially break into the top seven.

Last week The Daily Mail claimed that Wolves had made contact with West Brom over striker Salomon Rondon.

The powerful Venezuelan has a buyout clause of just £16.5m so should he arrive at Molineux, it would represent a mere snip in today’s transfer market.

The 29-year-old was superb on loan at Newcastle this season, scoring 11 times and also claiming seven assists.

If he does make the short trip across the Midlands he’ll likely be deployed regularly in the Europa League, with Raul Jimenez surely in no danger of losing his place as the main man in the Premier League.

With that in mind, he’ll have to improve in some key areas if Nuno Santo’s team are to go far on the continental stage.

On the chalkboard

Rondon has played in the Europa League in three separate seasons, all from his time in Russia. When at Rubin Kazan he scored seven goals across two campaigns in the Champions League’s sister competition. He then scored three times in the 2014/15 season once he’d made the move to Zenit.

However, all three of those goals in that campaign came in home ties.

This season Wolves have been poor at times when playing on the road and in big European ties, Rondon is someone who could struggle.

Admittedly he’s now become a better player, but the omens aren’t too positive in that regard, especially if he’d be stepping in for one of Wolves’ leading stars in Raul Jimenez.

To add to that, the forward’s pass completion in the competition during that same term was also extremely poor. He boasted a success rate of just 69.2% which could be extremely detrimental for Wolves’ counter-attacking style of play.

The Midlands club have relied on short and simple passing in the final third since Nuno came into the club, but with Rondon added to the squad this could suffer.

As such, the striker will have to significantly sharpen up his game with the ball at his feet.

The Venezuela international has been impressive this term but when it comes to European competition it’s clear he still has plenty of work to do.

وواصل: “كرة القدم لعبة جميلة، يجب أن يكون الأشخاص الذين يضعون القواعد أشخاصًا في اللعبة نفسها، لا أعرف من يخترعها، أود أن أقول فقط، كن متسقًا، هذا كل شيء”.

According to Tasnim News Agency, Leeds United are interested in bringing Iranian Saeid Ezatolahi to Elland Road this summer.

The 6 ft 3 midfielder spent last season on loan at Reading, but an injury cut his career at the Madejski Stadium short.

Brief but impressive

Although Ezatolahi played only four games for the Berkshire outfit, he looked like a solid player in the Championship.

He played as you would expect a man of his stature in the midfield to play. 2.3 tackles per game, three aerial duels won per 90 minutes and over three interceptions a match are some of the standout numbers that the Iranian produced during his time in English football.

If he were to join Marcelo Bielsa’s side, he would most likely slot in the holding midfield position which is currently occupied by Kalvin Phillips. With the 23-year-old’s future at the club uncertain Ezatolahi could find himself in a starting role next season.

Broader horizons

This potential signing indicates a change in policy at Leeds ahead of this transfer window.

12 months ago, the Whites’ transfer business was centred around bringing in numerous domestic players such as Patrick Bamford, Jack Harrison and Barry Douglas, but to now target an Iranian playing in Russia indicates that they’re looking for a different approach.

The Yorkshire outfit’s scouting network has clearly expanded, so they may target numerous players from all over Europe this summer.

This could be a good thing for Leeds as some of the Championship’s best signings come from abroad. Teemu Pukki immediately springs to mind, but the division is littered with many more like him.

Sometimes the best signings are found in these obscure countries, and for the Whites to finally be targeting these lesser-known players could work in their favour.

Leeds conducted plenty of poor business in the transfer market last season, and they will be hoping for a change in fortunes with this new approach.

TEAMtalk claim that should any club meet Leicester’s £85m valuation of Harry Maguire this summer they won’t stand in the way of him leaving the King Power.

It’s a bold transfer claim from the publication who suggest that the Foxes are eyeing up Lewis Dunk as a replacement. The report claims that the Brighton man could move to the Midlands for a huge fee of £40m.

Reacting to the news on Twitter, Leicester supporters were baffled by the update, laying down their concerns in abundance.

One fan claimed the world had gone mad after seeing the report whilst a further supporter suggested that if they could find the money for Dunk, they could quite easily cough up the funds required to sign Youri Tielemans.

The Telegraph claimed last month that the Foxes had been put off by Monaco’s £40m price tag for the Belgian. To think they’d be willing to spend that much on Dunk is therefore incredibly questionable.

The 27-year-old was vital for the Seagulls in 2018/19, featuring 36 times as he missed just two Premier League games.

Celtic fans are keen on the idea of signing Toulouse defender Christophier Jullien after he was linked with a move to Glasgow this week.

French outlet L’Equipe reported on Wednesday that the Hoops were interested in securing his transfer from the Ligue 1 club, stating that the player has already made a visit to check out the facilities at the Scottish champions.

With the paper reporting a potential transfer fee of €8m to €10m (£7.1m to £8.9m), clearly it would be a massive transfer for the Hoops if it comes off, having rarely spent that kind of cash in the past.

The centre-back area is a problem position though with Dedryck Boyata and Filip Benkovic both leaving at the end of last season.

Celtic badly need replacements and Jullien would appear to fit the bill having racked up good experience playing in the French top-flight.
