Crystal Palace fans not happy as Watford reportedly open talks with Saint-Maximin

[ad_pod ]

According to France Football, via Get French Football News, Watford are in pole position to sign reported Crystal Palace target Allan Saint-Maximin, and Eagles fans on Twitter are understandably not impressed.

The Daily Mail reported last month that the south London outfit are interested in the attacker, who could cost £25m, with the Frenchman being viewed as not only providing competition for Wilfried Zaha at Selhurst Park, but potentially even replacing him in the long term.

However, while France Football, via GFFN, have acknowledged the interest from Palace in their latest report, they believe that their Premier League rivals are in direct contact with Maximin’s entourage about a potential move to Vicarage Road.

The 22-year-old certainly enjoyed an impressive 2018/19 campaign with Nice, scoring six goals and providing a further five assists in 34 Ligue 1 appearances.

Crystal Palace supporters have been quick to have their say on the latest twist on social media, and they are clearly far from happy.

Signing Konsa could set up an even brighter future for Aston Villa

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Aston Villa have wrapped up the signing of Ezri Konsa from Brentford.

The Bees centre-back had a £12m buy-out clause in his contract which the Villans decided to utilise in a bid to bring him to the Midlands.

And with the deal now going through, he’s become the club’s seventh signing of the summer and their second of the week after they welcomed Tyrone Mings back to the club on Monday.

But what could Konsa’s addition mean?

On the chalkboard

Back in May, Christian Purslow admitted that it was a goal of Villa’s to build an exciting and young team.

Adding the 21-year-old Konsa to their ranks, therefore, immediately fits that philosophy.

However, by also landing him, it has potentially set the club up for a considerably brighter future.

The 6 foot central defender doesn’t boast any Premier League experience to date, but with England U21 caps to his name and a breakthrough season in the Championship under his belt, he looks extremely well set for a promising career.

Konsa is a classic modern centre-back, possessing the ability to play out from defence after achieving a pass success rate of 87.7% in the second tier last season.

That number wasn’t bettered by anyone to play an extended part in the Villa side in 2018/19 and could be key considering Dean Smith’s men like to pass the ball around.

Yet, there is more to this signing than what he offered last term. Instead, it’ll be about what he could offer in the future that will be most crucial.

The Midlands outfit have already landed a number of promising young players they can develop further. Through the door has arrived the 22-year-old striker Wesley, as well as 23-year-old defenders Kortney Hause and Matt Targett.

Thogden challenged himself to DM 100 footballers on Instagram. Find out who replied in the video below…

Under Steve Bruce at the beginning of last season, the defence was full of ageing individuals like Tommy Elphick, James Chester and Alan Hutton.

But Smith has developed a new-look backline that regardless of whether they stay in the Premier League, should set themselves up for a brighter future, especially with the undoubted potential of Konsa arriving.

As Villa head into an opening day clash with Tottenham, their entire defence could well be under the age of 26. It’ll be a stark contrast to almost a year ago.

Five players Rangers want to sign before 2nd September

After finishing second in the Scottish Premier League last season, Steven Gerrard and co will be hoping that they can go one better in the next campaign. To do so, some new signings would not go amiss. But who could join the Gers before the Scottish transfer window shuts on September 2nd? We take a look at five players who could potentially move to Ibrox before that date.

Daniel Sturridge left Liverpool at the start of the month and, as of yet, he has not found a club where he can continue his career. There have been several clubs linked to the 29-year-old by Fotomac (via Sport Witness) though, including Rangers. Fenerbahce and Old Firm rivals Celtic are believed to be eyeing the former Bolton and Chelsea forward as well. Signing a player who has over 100 career goals and has played at the highest level would be a coup.

Ryan Kent was a regular for Gerrard last season but has since returned to parent Liverpool club following the end of his loan spell. Rangers are very interested in taking the 22-year-old back north of the border as they look to close the gap to the Bhoys in the league, with the Gers boss reportedly desperate to see him return. However, the winger was included in the Reds’ pre-season tour of the US, so a deal is unlikely to be completed soon. But with so much talent ahead of him in Jurgen Klopp’s squad, a move may be the best outcome for all parties.

With Alfredo Morelos continually linked with a move away from Ibrox this summer, a new striker may be needed at Rangers. One potential arrival who has been targeted is Bolton forward Josh Magennis. The Lancashire club’s problems have been well documented and the 28-year-old has asked for help from the PFA in an attempt to escape the former Premier League outfit. A departure from the cash-strapped club looks likely this summer, and there is still time for Rangers to complete a potential deal.

Rangers are not just looking to boost their forward line though. The defence has also been looked at, and the club have their eyes on Martin Olsson in an attempt to improve it. Last month, the Scottish outfit were one of two clubs, the other being Nottingham Forest, who were said to have held talks with the Sweden international in regards to a move. He is currently a free agent having recently left Swansea City, so a switch to Ibrox would not be too complicated and would not require Rangers to pay a hefty transfer fee.

We end the list of Rangers’ potential new signings with another forward. Kemar Roofe was one of Leeds United’s best players last season as they came close to promotion to the Premier League. It has been reported that the Glasgow-based outfit have targeted Roofe to replace Alfredo Morelos should he leave Ibrox this summer. The 26-year-old is said to have been offered a huge contract by the 54-time Scottish champions, which may be enough to convince him to make the switch.

Arsenal: Club offer Sami Khedira a contract after Juventus prepare to let him leave for free

Arsenal have offered Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira a contract, according to journalist Nicolò Schira.

It is thought Juventus are willing to let the Germany international go for free as he doesn’t feature in manager Maurizio Sarri’s plans for next season.

The links for a move away comes after the signings of Adrien Rabiot and Aaron Ramsey on free transfers, which could see Khedira’s chances become even more limited.

With reports surrounding the future of Mohamed Elneny and Aaron Ramsey’s free transfer to Juventus, a move for the German midfielder seems to be an option for the club if reports are true. Khedira would be the second Juventus star to join Arsenal on a free transfer following Stephan Lichtsteiner, who joined in last summer’s transfer window.

Still, there should be huge red flags over the World Cup winners’ recent injury history and this should deter Arsenal from signing him. In the last three seasons, Khedira has suffered as many as 10 different injuries (per Transfermarkt) that have limited his playing time and last season saw the German play just 17 games in all competitions.

Signing experienced heads doesn’t necessarily mean the player will be successful and with Khedira’s injury history, he may not have the legs to play in the middle of the park for Arsenal. For example, by comparing the two on WhoScored, you can see Granit Xhaka outdid the World Cup winner in almost every available metric last season and the fact the ex-Real Madrid ace has played fewer and fewer games every season since 2016/17 should also be a worry.

Arsenal are seemingly gearing up for a fresh new start after overhauling their recruitment team. Along with that has come a new idea of implementing younger players, whether that is done via the transfer market, with signings like Dani Ceballos, or by dipping into their Hale End academy, with Joe Willock impressing in pre-season.

A mixture of history and a new strategy should see Arsenal move away from signing Khedira. The 32-year-old’s fitness worries and the influx of youngsters in Arsenal’s midfield means the club shouldn’t sign him.

Liverpool fans react to Simon Mignolet’s farewell message

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans on Twitter have been reacting to Simon Mignolet’s farewell interview on Wednesday afternoon.

Mignolet left Anfield earlier this week to sign a five-year contract with Club Brugge.

The 30-year-old was back in Merseyside on Wednesday, though, and Liverpool’s official Twitter account posted a video from the shot-stopper’s final interview.

And Reds followers were quick to wish Mignolet well upon the end of what has been a turbulent career at Anfield.

Mignolet was a key part of Liverpool’s Premier League title charge during his first season on Merseyside, retaining No.1 status for all 38 top flight games as Brendan Rodgers’ side ran Manchester City close for the English crown.

However, he was later rotated with Loris Karius after committing four errors leading to goals in 2015/16, and last summer was surpassed in the pecking order by Brazilian Alisson.

Mignolet has now embarked on the next stage in his career – here’s a look at how fans reacted to his interview on Twitter…

Everton would be mad to let Mason Holgate leave without signing cover first

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Daily Mail, Mason Holgate is of interest to Bournemouth, Sheffield United and Burnley, with Everton willing to sell the defender for a sum of £8m.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Holgate found chances at Goodison Park hard to come by last season, making just five Premier League appearances.

The 22-year-old eventually joined West Brom on loan in the January window, where he made 21 Championship appearances and scored a single goal for the Baggies – Holgate also recorded four assists.

Whilst the Midlands-based side remain interested, the England Under-21 international has returned to the Toffees but doesn’t seem guaranteed to be a part of Marco Silva’s plans, with the aforementioned report saying that the club are open to loaning him out again.

Would be a crazy move

With just three days until the transfer deadline on Thursday, Everton have only two centre-backs at the club in Yerry Mina and Michael Keane, as well as just one right-back at the club in Seamus Coleman after Jonjoe Kenny departed for Schalke.

We have already discussed just how ridiculous a move it would be if Everton sanctioned Holgate’s departure this summer, seeing how the Englishman can play at right-back or at centre-back, but doing it this close to the deadline without signing another defender first would be downright ludicrous.

Silva wants a right-back before the deadline, and is still pursuing Kurt Zouma which suggests he wants a centre-back as well to bolster his backline.

Check out some amazing tekkers in the video below…

If the Merseysiders do let Holgate – a man who can cover in both of these positions – go before signing new faces for the back four then it would be absolute madness, and would also leave them in a weak negotiating position when targeting new defenders.

A situation could easily arise where the Toffees are left desperately scrambling for depth to add to their defence with just one right-back, two centre-backs and two left-backs at the club going into the new season, which is basically just the first-choice back four with Leighton Baines added on.

Everton would be crazy to put themselves in such a perilous position.
