WHAT HAPPENED?
Belgian playmaker De Bruyne is a Premier League legend, with six league titles and a couple of PFA Player of the Year awards to his name. He is, however, now 33 years of age, into the final 12 months of his contract at the Etihad Stadium and picking up injuries on a more regular basis.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
That has led to his game time being limited this season, as long-running hamstring issues are managed, but questions are being asked of why De Bruyne finds himself on the bench when fully fit – with that proving to be the case once again for a crucial clash with Liverpool at Anfield last time out.
WHAT NEVILLE SAID
After seeing City suffer a costly 2-0 defeat in that contest, with De Bruyne being introduced 12 minutes from the end, Gary Neville has told his of a confusing situation: “The De Bruyne thing is unusual, bizarre, strange. Why is probably the best player the Premier League has had in the last 10 years not out there? We know he's had injuries but why is he not out there because he's a leader, he's got authority, he's confidence and brilliance so something is definitely going on in the dressing room.
“There's something happening but Guardiola has got complete [control] of the club, he's extended his contract and he's probably just waiting for the January and [summer] transfer windows. He has built two sensational football teams while he's been at the club and he's going to have to go and build a third.”

That view is shared by fellow pundit and former Premier League defender Jamie Carragher, with the Liverpool icon telling : "Something is going on with De Bruyne. For me, he has been the best player in the for the last five seasons. He isn't starting games and doesn't come on at half time.
"I am not trying to cause more trouble for Manchester City but something isn't right between those two. It is sad because we are talking about one of the greatest managers, and greatest players in the Premier League. His contract is up this summer and I know he has had a few problems but something isn't right if he isn't in the team when he is fit."
Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards also weighed in on the situation, telling the podcast: "This goes back to before the international break where he got some minutes but after the break he didn't start and then he hasn't started again but he's the one that can unlock a door. We know that with De Bruyne you've got to wrap him in cotton wool, especially in previous seasons, but in a big game like this – but even just the talks and potentially going to Saudi Arabia at the end of the year, it looks like there's some sort of rift going on between them."
It's set to be a big season for Tottenham Hotspur this year as Ange Postecoglou looks to build upon his successful debut campaign and lead the club back into the Champions League.
Daniel Levy and Co are clearly doing their best to help the Australian as well, with the exciting signings of Archie Gray, Yang Min-Hyeok, and, most importantly, Dominic Solanke bolstering the squad.
However, it would appear that the North Londoners aren't quite done yet, as recent reports have now linked them with another exciting attacker, although his arrival could spell trouble for Dejan Kulusevski.
Tottenham Hotspurs transfer news
According to a recent report from journalist Steve Kay on KS1 TV, Tottenham are keen to sign a new wide player this summer and are interested in Bayern Munich's Kingsley Coman.
Bayern's Kingsley Coman
Kay claims that there are "a lot of clubs" after the Frenchman at the moment, and he knows that the Lilywhites are "looking at him."
He does not mention how much the former Juventus ace could cost Spurs but reports earlier this week revealed that while Bayern would be willing to let him leave on loan this season, they also value him at between €30m and €40m, which converts to between £26m and £34m.
It could prove to be a complicated deal to get over the line if the interest from other sides is particularly strong, but if Levy and Co can sign Coman this summer, they must, as he'd bring so much quality to the frontline and could be the perfect Kulusevski upgrade.
How Coman compares to Kulusevski
Now, were Spurs to get this deal over the line and bring Coman to North London in the coming weeks, his positional versatility would mean he could play and provide cover on either the left or right of a front three.
However, given Son Heung-min's incredible performance last season, in which he racked up 27 goals and assists in just 36 appearances, it seems far more likely that the Frenchman would be used off the right.
This would then put him in direct competition with Kulusevki for a place on the team. So, how do they compare?
Dejan Kulusevski.
Well, from an output perspective, it's the Bayern ace who comes out ahead, and when we look at their last two seasons combined, it's not even close.
For example, last season, he produced eight goals and assists in 27 appearances, while the campaign before, he racked up 16 goals and assists in 35 appearances. This means he averaged a goal involvement every 3.37 games last season and one every 2.18 games the year prior.
In contrast, the Lilywhites ace ended last season with 11 goals and assists in 39 appearances, while he ended 2022/23 with ten goals and assists in 37 matches. This means he averaged a goal involvement every 3.54 games last season and one every 3.70 games in 22/23.
Unfortunately for the Swedish international, the comparison doesn't get any better for him when we take a look at their underlying numbers from last season.

With just over a week until the transfer window slams shut, West Ham United have reportedly been offered the chance to sign a Premier League winner for Julen Lopetegui.
West Ham transfer news
The Hammers have enjoyed quite the summer, with the additions of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jean-Clair Todibo and Niclas Fullkrug arguably the standouts in a busy transfer window, which could yet get even busier. As deadline day approaches, West Ham have been linked with a move to sign Carlos Soler from Paris Saint-Germain.
PSG player Carlos Soler
The Spanish midfielder could instantly ease any fears over Lucas Paqueta's potential incoming ban for breaching betting rules and cap off a first summer to remember for Lopetegui. Of course, however, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss must still ensure that he puts together a balanced squad in pursuit of his first Premier League win at the London Stadium after losing 2-1 against Aston Villa on the opening day.
What could help Lopetegui's side begin to gel is the arrival of a Premier League veteran who has been frozen out of his current side. According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, West Ham have now been offered the chance to sign Raheem Sterling after contact and are being spoken to by his agent after the winger was made to train away from the Chelsea first-team alongside several others.

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca recently admitted that Sterling does not have a place in his side, saying via Fabrizio Romano: "I’ve been honest, he will have no minutes here. I am not saying Raheem is not a good player but I prefer different kinds of wingers. It’s simple."
Swinging the door open for Sterling's exit, it could now be West Ham who benefit by signing a Premier League winger who's played among Europe's best in the last decade.
West Ham should make Chelsea regret decision on "special" Sterling
Whilst it would be an expensive way to get one over on their rivals, given Sterling's reported £325k-a-week salary, West Ham could be rewarded in the best way possible by taking a gamble on the Premier League winner in the remaining days of the transfer window.
The 29-year-old is one of the most experienced forwards in English football these days and would arrive having earned his place in the Premier League's 100 club with 123 top-flight goals to his name and 193 senior goals in his career. Simply put, if there's a deal to be done, then the Hammers should at least attempt to land Sterling's signature.
The former Liverpool man was part of a dominant Manchester City side, helping the Citizens become the first side in English football history to accumulate 100 points in a single season, and earned the praise of Pep Guardiola as a result.
The City boss said via BBC Sport in 2019, ironically after Sterling scored a hat-trick at the London Stadium: "I know the special qualities of the player, the consistency, physicality, the finishing.
"For the second goal against West Ham the control was not good but the finish good, the third goal was really good. He is in his first days playing as a striker but for me striker will be an incredible position for him, but he can play in three positions up front."

WHAT RUBEN AMORIM SAID
“In this moment, we just have to survive and to win sometimes, to work on the team,” he said, when asked about the threat of getting pulled towards the relegation zone. “We already knew it, when I started this job and started with the team, the new idea of no time to train, a lot of games, tough games, we already knew it, it’s a long journey, like I said in the first day we have to continue and we have to fight these bad moments because this is part of football.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
When Amorim replaced the sacked Erik ten Hag, hopes were high that the Portuguese could improve United's ailing fortunes. But so far, they seem to be going backwards. However, they are seven points behind the top six – the same gap to the relegation zone – and there is time for the ex-Sporting CP boss to come good.

WHAT NEXT?
Amorim will hope United can end the year on a high when they host in-form Newcastle United at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Monday.
Following a disastrous summer transfer window, Newcastle United could be about to suffer their biggest blow yet after deadline day, with one player reportedly agreeing personal terms with a European club.
Newcastle transfer news
The Magpies entered the transfer window in desperate need of another centre-back and ideally a replacement for Miguel Almiron. To put their struggles into context, they still need exactly that now that it has slammed shut months later. The summer should be seen as a major failure by all involved at St James' Park, with Eddie Howe now left scrambling for defensive options.
Having set their sights on Marc Guehi up until the Premier League's transfer deadline, Newcastle didn't have an alternative to turn to when they reportedly saw yet another bid in the region of £60m rejected by Crystal Palace.

Instead, they seemingly turned towards solving another squad problem by seeking an upgrade on Almiron by reportedly including the winger in a player-plus-cash deal worth £50m to sign Anthony Elanga. Like Palace, however, Nottingham Forest rejected the Magpies' approach.
Licking their wounds ever since their failure, things could yet get even worse for those at St James' Park. According to Turkish journalist Resat Can Ozbudak, Super Lig outfit Eyupspor have reached an agreement on personal terms with Kieran Trippier, with the Istanbul-based club now waiting to open negotiations with Newcastle over a deal to sign the right-back.
Trippier, of course, currently finds himself out of Howe's starting side following the re-emergence of Tino Livramento, and may seal a move away from Tyneside in pursuit of minutes before the transfer window in Turkey closes on 18th September.
It's certainly a time of change in the right-back's career following his retirement from international football. Hanging up his boots on the international stage after coming so close to making history for England on more than one occasion, it looks as though Trippier is also ready for a change at club level.
Newcastle must keep "fundamental" Trippier
After failing to sign Guehi to leave Howe's side short at centre-back and force Dan Burn to step in once again, Newcastle cannot afford to be left even shorter at full-back by losing Trippier without being in a position to welcome a replacement.
This isn't the first time that the former Tottenham Hotspur man has been linked with a move away, with Howe taking the opportunity to sing his praises amid previous links to Bayern Munich.
Howe told the press (via Metro): "He is a guy who will play a lot of creative passes before a goal happens. He has been fundamental to how we work – his leadership skills behind the scenes have been second to none."
Earning a reported £120,000 a week and under contract at Newcastle until 2026 as things stand, Newcastle should make sure to keep hold of Trippier until at least the January transfer window or next summer, when they'll have the chance to bring in a successor. Until then, however, they may face a nervous wait.

WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD
Fans will have to wait and see if Rashford does feature against Newcastle as Manchester United aim to stop a run of three straight defeats. The team's next fixture is a daunting trip to league leaders Liverpool on Sunday in the Premier League.
Leeds United were a busy club throughout the summer transfer window, which officially slammed shut on Friday night, with plenty of incoming and outgoings.
The Whites failed to earn promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking last season, as they lost 1-0 to Southampton in the play-off final at Wembley in May, and that left them vulnerable to clubs coming in for their players.
Archie Gray was signed by Tottenham Hotspur, Crysencio Summerville moved to West Ham United, Glen Kamara joined Rennes, and Georginio Rutter was snapped up by Brighton & Hove Albion.
They were all regular starters under Daniel Farke in the 2023/24 campaign and it was crucial that they were replaced in the transfer market this summer.
The Yorkshire-based outfit moved to sign Largie Ramazani, Manor Solomon, Alex Cairns, Jayden Bogle, Joe Rodon, Ao Tanaka, Isaac Schmidt, and Joe Rothwell to bolster their playing squad.
Farke needed to add quality to the group after the likes of Rutter and Summerville moved on and the 49ers splashed the cash to bring one player, in particular, to Elland Road for the 2024/25 campaign.
How much Leeds paid for Largie Ramazani
The Whites reportedly agreed a £10m deal with Spanish side Almeria to sign the former Manchester United academy prospect this summer.
Leeds needed a left winger to come in and fill the gap left by Summerville and Ramazani was brought in alongside Solomon to fulfill that need.
The Tottenham Hotspur loanee got off to the perfect start, with an assist against Hull in a 2-0 win at Elland Road on Saturday, but the ex-Almeria star had to settle for a 17-minute cameo off the bench.
Hopefully, there are big things to come from the 23-year-old winger after he caught the eye with his performances in LaLiga last season, despite his side suffering relegation to LaLiga 2.

As you can see in the table above, the Belgian youngster provided his team with a huge creative threat, with ten 'big chances' created in 29 matches.
However, his teammates only scored five goals from those ten 'big chances', which suggests that Ramazani was let down by their wasteful finishing.
Leeds, however, could have had a more valuable asset, and better player, in their ranks had Victor Orta not had a nightmare with Jack Clarke back in the summer of 2019.
How much Spurs paid for Jack Clarke
Ahead of the 2019/20 campaign, former sporting director Orta opted to cash in on the talented teen winger amid interest from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs swooped in and managed to secure his services for a fee of £8.5m and they allowed the youngster to return to the club on a season-long loan.
That came after the teenage starlet had produced two goals and two assists in 25 first-team appearances for Leeds in Marcelo Bielsa's first season in Yorkshire.
He was a hugely promising talent who had emerged as a genuine senior option for the Argentine head coach, but was cashed in on after just one year in the first-team.
Clarke then only played three times in the first half of the 2019/20 campaign, as Bielsa was seemingly not keen on developing a player for another club ahead of his permanent options, before returning to Spurs in January.
The right-footed attacker eventually ended up at Sunderland in the 2021/22 campaign, where he racked up one goal and four assists in 20 league outings, and signed permanently for the Black Cats in the summer of 2022.
Jack Clarke
He then went on to star for the Wearside-based outfit over the next two years and earned himself a move to the Premier League, where he is now more valuable than Ramazani.
Orta had a nightmare with the young winger as Leeds won promotion the season that he was sold and that could have been enough to keep him at the club for the future, which would have seen him develop and thrive at Elland Road instead of elsewhere.
How much Jack Clarke is worth now
Ipswich Town, who were promoted ahead of the Whites last term, swooped in to sign the winger for a reported fee of £15m that could rise to £20m with add-ons.
This means that he is currently valued at least £5m, and potentially £10m, higher than Ramazani, who plays in the same position as him on the left flank.
The Tractor Boys decided to move for the English flanker after his impressive form in the Championship for the Black Cats over the previous two campaigns.
In his first full season in the second tier with Sunderland, Clarke recorded 20 direct goal contributions and helped his side to qualify for the play-offs.

As you can see in the table above, the former Leeds academy prospect proved his quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals in the Championship.
That was only emphasised by his performances for the club in the 2023/24 campaign, as he once again showcased his ability in the final third on a regular basis.
Clarke scored 15 goals from 11.43 xG in 40 appearances in the Championship for Sunderland last season, which shows that he is a ruthless finisher who does not pass up on many high-quality opportunities to find the back of the net.
The 23-year-old ace, who was described as "unplayable" by pundit Adrian Clarke, only registered four assists in those 40 matches for the Black Cats, but that does not tell the full story.
He created 12 'big chances' for his teammates and ended the season with an xA tally of 9.77, to go along with 2.4 key passes per game, and this suggests that he was let down by poor and wasteful finishing by other players.

Overall, Orta had a nightmare by selling him to Spurs for £8.5m as Leeds missed out on an incredibly gifted Championship player and a far more valuable asset further down the line.
Wolves started the 2024/25 Premier League campaign slowly, losing two and drawing one of their opening three fixtures. However, the Old Gold had a tough start, facing both Arsenal and Chelsea in their first two games.
Gary O'Neil lost one of his most important players this summer, with Pedro Neto making the move to Chelsea for a fee of around £54m.
Neto made 24 appearances for Wolves last season in all competitions, scoring three goals, providing 11 assists, and totalling 1,729 minutes played.
It may well come to pass that they end up missing the electric winger. Do they miss Morgan Gibbs-White, though? He's certainly gone to a new level after leaving Molineux behind.
Morgan Gibbs-White at Wolves
Morgan Gibbs-White came through the Wolves academy, joining the club at eight years old. He played 17 games for the U21 side, scoring two goals and providing five assists, but it didn't take long for the English midfielder to break into senior football.
Morgan-gibbs-white-wolves
Making his first-team debut in 2017, Gibbs-White went on to make 88 appearances for Wolves, scoring three goals and providing one assist, but many of these minutes were from the bench, totalling 3,053 minutes.
Gibbs-White spent two spells out on loan, his first being with Swansea in 2020/21, but his most successful time came at Sheffield United in 2021/22, where he made 38 appearances for the Blades in all competitions, scoring 13 goals, and providing ten assists.
This successful stint for Sheffield United caused Nottingham Forest to make a move for the English midfielder, paying a £25m initial fee, with add-ons that take the deal to a total of £42.5m.
How Gibbs-White is playing at Forest
Since being sold by Bruno Lage to Forest, Gibbs-White has been a key man, making 83 appearances for the club, scoring 12 goals and providing 18 assists, totalling 6,949 minutes played. He has already doubled his minutes played in fewer appearances for Forest than in his time at Wolves.
Labelled an "underrated playmaker" by Statman Dave, the 24-year-old has made an immense impact so far this season. Indeed, the English midfielder has created the most chances from open play in the Premier League (9), joint with Chelsea sensation Cole Palmer.

Stats taken from FBref
As you can see from the metrics so far this campaign, Gibbs-White is performing extremely close to Palmer's level, even bettering him in some metrics. The 24-year-old is averaging seven progressive passes per 90, more than Palmer's 6.90.
He is also averaging nearly double the successful take-ons of Palmer, with two per 90 minutes, compared to Palmer's 1.03. Gibbs-White has a more compact and durable body composition, where his ability to carry the ball with power and a long stride helps him to get away from his marker/defender. It's perhaps not a surprise, therefore, to see that the two are now teammates at international level.
Contrastingly, Palmer is more controlled with his movements, using body feints and agility to get away from his man and create separation, and he does this effectively, averaging more progressive carries than the former Wolves man despite their different carrying styles.
Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White
Wolves could have done with the creation of Gibbs-White this season, especially after losing Neto this summer, and it seems clear that selling him may well have been a mistake as he looks on track for his best season yet.
