Liverpool: Fans react to Gini Wijnaldum comments

Gini Wijnaldum is to leave Liverpool for Paris St Germain after five years at the club, and plenty of Reds fans have been reacting to his latest comments on his departure from Anfield.

Signed from Newcastle United in 2016, the Dutchman has went on to make 237 appearances for the Reds; registering 22 goals and 16 assists [Transfermarkt].

The midfielder initially looked set to join Barcelona on a free transfer this summer, however has now opted for French side Paris St Germain over the Catalan giants [Guardian].

Speaking about leaving Merseyside to Voetbal International, the Netherlands star stated:

“There are things happening behind the scenes that you cannot influence. What I do want to say is that the people at the training complex, the staff of the club and my fellow players would have liked to keep me.”

Bound to be intrigued by the statement, which seems to suggest it was the higher-ups at the club who refused him a new deal, many Liverpool fans took to Twitter to react to these latest developments.

Man United: Romano drops Phillips update

Ralf Rangnick is interested in a deal to bring Kalvin Phillips to Manchester United in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, with the Italian journalist and transfer insider revealing during a recent appearance on The United Stand that, with David Moyes appearing adamant that Declan Rice will not be sold for anything under £150m this summer, Rangnick could instead pursue a deal for the Leeds United midfielder.

Regarding United’s potential interest in the 26-year-old, Romano said: “Phillips would be the solution for a normal fee, not a crazy fee. He’s a player who is appreciated by the Man United board, so he could be a possibility.

“But, he’s still not been discussed with Erik ten Hag. So, he’s on Manchester United’s list, he’s appreciated by Ralf Rangnick – I’m told – but, still not approved by Erik ten Hag.”

Supporters will love it

Despite Romano’s claim that Rangnick and the Manchester United board are yet to discuss a potential move for Phillips with Ten Hag, the suggestion that the club are interested in a deal to sign the England international is sure to be an update the Old Trafford faithful will love.

While it is true that Phillips’ 2021/22 campaign has been largely hampered by injury, the 26-year-old undoubtedly proved his ability at the very highest level of the English professional game last season.

Indeed, over his 29 Premier League appearances last term, the £45m-rated talent was in sensational form for the Whites, making an average of 1.6 interceptions, 2.6 tackles, 1.7 clearances and winning 5.3 duels – at a success rate of 52% – per game.

The £38k-per-week defensive midfielder also impressed going forwards, scoring one goal, registering two assists and creating five big chances for his teammates, as well as completing an average of 1.2 key passes, 4.7 long balls, 41 passes and 0.7 dribbles per fixture.

These returns saw the player who Leeds fans have dubbed the Yorkshire Pirlo average a quite breathtaking SofaScore match rating of 7.21, not only ranking him as Leeds’ best performer in the league but also as the ninth-best midfielder in the division as a whole.

As such, it is clear for all to see that, should Manchester United not be able to afford a move for Rice this summer, Phillips would undoubtedly be a fantastic alternative to the West Ham talisman – not to mention a signing who would be a dramatic improvement upon Ten Hag’s current options in the middle of the Old Trafford pitch.

Everton may drop Holgate vs West Ham

Many Everton fans have been giving their thoughts as Phil Kirkbride has claimed that Mason Holgate may be dropped against West Ham United on Sunday afternoon.

However, the Liverpool Echo journalist suggested that the defender needs time to regain his form, which caused quite a stir among some members of the Goodison Park faithful.

Holgate has made costly errors in recent games for the Toffees, dwelling on the ball which allowed Ollie Watkins to score for Aston Villa last week, while two lapses of judgement alongside Michael Keane allowed Harry Kane to score twice for Tottenham in April.

It seems as if many Everton supporters have simply had enough of the defender and subsequently do not want him to start in what is a crucial match away to the Hammers as Carlo Ancelotti’s side chase a European finish.

Celtic preparing Aurelio Buta bid

Celtic may have their first win of the Ange Postecoglou reign under their belts but they cannot neglect the need to bring more new faces to Paradise.

Joe Hart and James McCarthy became members of the Hoops family last week but there is still plenty of work to be done.

On the chalkboard

Anthony Ralston has performed admirably this season after coming in for scrutiny that he wasn’t good enough for Celtic.

Those claims made sense considering he played just once for the Bhoys last term. However, he’s been ever-present since Ange Postecoglou took charge and even scored a wonderful goal against Hearts last weekend.

Ralston collected the ball from Odsonne Edouard before dancing beyond several defenders and then planting the ball past Craig Gordon from inside the area.

He also scored against Dundee on Sunday afternoon in their 6-0 thrashing to continue his mightily impressive campaign.

Though, if Celtic are serious about advancing in Europe and contending for the title again, they will need to sign an improvement.

That’s why supporters should be delighted that they are in discussions to sign Royal Antwerp defender Aurelio Buta.

He’s been on Celtic’s radar for a number of weeks now but Sky Sports reported last Friday that a bid of £4.5m was now being prepared.

If they can lure him to Paradise, it would be an almighty upgrade on Ralston.

The Glaswegian side haven’t replaced Jeremie Frimpong since he left for Bayer Leverkusen last January but Buta would help them significantly.

He is a tackling machine and is equally adept in forward phases of play. Dubbed “very gifted” by journalist, Aster Nzeyimana, the 24-year-old completed 1.2 tackles per match in 2020/21.

That’s a tally that would have equalled Frimpong’s success rate in a Celtic shirt from the same season.

Hailed as one of the best full-backs in the Belgian top-flight, Buta would be an exceptional piece of business by Postecoglou and co.

They have needed a permanent full-back for the best part of eight months now and thus, fans should be excited at the idea of signing him.

Ralston has enjoyed an impressive start to the campaign but he is still relatively unproven in the Premiership over a prolonged period of time.

Sawyers could be set for West Brom exit

West Bromwich Albion midfielder Romaine Sawyers could be heading for an exit from The Hawthorns this summer.

What’s the talk?

According to a number of recent reports, as relayed by the Express and Star, Stoke City are thought to be keeping a very close eye on the situation of the 29-year-old ahead of a potential move in the summer transfer window.

It is reported that Michael O’Neill is keen to bring in further additions to his Potters side in the coming weeks, having already made four signings this summer, with his focus now falling upon the Albion midfielder.

Finally, it is mentioned that the Saint Kitts and Nevis international was left out of Valerien Ismael’s matchday squad for the Baggies’ season opener against Bournemouth last Friday, something that would appear to suggest Sawyers could well be heading for a move away from the club in the not too distant future.

Fans will be buzzing

While it is indeed true that West Brom are currently short of options in the middle of the park, with Sawyers being one of three players capable of operating naturally from central midfield in Valerien Ismael’s first-team squad, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that, should Stoke submit a reasonable offer for the 29-year-old, the Frenchman should cash in on the midfielder this summer.

Indeed, over his 19 Premier League appearances for Albion last season, the £1.8m-rated man scored no goals, provided no assists and created just one big chance for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 0.2 shots and making a mere 0.3 key passes per game.

The £10k-per-week Sawyers also lost possession of the ball an average of 8.1 times per match, in addition to making one error that led to a shot and two errors that led to a goal, with SofaScore listing one of the player’s weaknesses as his error proneness.

These metrics saw the man Jake Livermore dubbed a “top player” earn a highly disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.47, ranking him as Albion’s joint-worst performer in the top flight of English football.

As such, despite the fact that Ismael is so thin on the ground in central midfield, if Stoke were to submit a bid anywhere near Sawyers current £1.8m Transfermarkt valuation, it would highly advisable that the 49-year-old snatches O’Neill’s hand off. Albion fans will be buzzing to get the disapointing midfielder out of their club.

Everton fans react to Zaha rumour

Everton are interested in signing Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha in the summer transfer window, according to Goal.

The report says the Blues have been keen on Zaha since the summer of 2019, when they offered £70million plus Cenk Tosun and James McCarthy.

That ‘admiration’ remains, and they believe Zaha’s price is now far lower. Indeed, he could be available for less than £40million.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side may face competition from Tottenham Hotspur, who are said to be ‘monitoring the situation’.

Zaha a vital figure at Selhurst Park

Though Palace’s demands appear to have eased somewhat, they understandably want to keep hold of him.

Zaha scored 11 goals for the Eagles last season, the highest tally in the squad. Christian Benteke (10 goals) was the only other player to pass the five-goal mark (via BBC Sport).

Roy Hodgson is leaving Selhurst Park, and there may be serious concerns about the impact of losing both a manager and a talismanic on-field figure.

Fan feed The Toffee Blues relayed Goal’s report, and here’s how supporters reacted.

Spurs submit offer for Correa

Tottenham have reportedly submitted an official offer to sign Lazio’s Joaquin Correa…

What’s the talk?

According to Italian outlet Alfredo Pedulla, Tottenham have submitted an official £26m (€30m) offer to sign Joaquin Correa from Lazio. Fabio Paratici is keen on bringing the Argentine forward to England and has made his first move.

The report claims that PSG have joined Spurs in the race and have offered £9m (€10m) plus Pablo Sarabia in exchange for Correa. However, it remains to be seen how Lazio will respond to the two proposals from PSG and Tottenham.

Upgrade on Bergwijn

Paratici must ensure that he is able to get a deal for Correa over the line. The ex-Juventus chief has already shown that he is serious about a swoop for the attacker by making an official £26m bid, but now, he needs to work double-time to beat PSG to his signature.

Mauricio Pochettino may be able to get one over on his former team by swooping Correa up from under them, which is something that Spurs cannot allow to happen.

Correa could be the upgrade Nuno Santo needs on Steven Bergwijn. The Dutch winger has failed to make his mark in England as he produced just one goal and three assists in 21 Premier League appearances last term. Bergwijn also fell short in the Europa League, with zero goal contributions in eight matches.

Correa, on the other hand, was in fine form for Lazio as he was directly involved in 16 goals in all competitions for the club. With 11 goals and five assists for the Italian giants, the 26-year-old proved his quality at the top level and showed that he could be the player Santo needs to bolster his wide options and potentially replace Bergwijn in the squad.

Therefore, it could be time for Paratici to wave bye-bye to Bergwijn and replace him with Correa as he would be improving the team and giving Santo a greater chance of achieving his goals in the Premier League.

Juan Sebastian Veron told Infocielo that the attacker is crushing it in the Serie A and has urged him to stay where he is: “He is crushing it. He must remain there in Italy.”

However, the player himself has admitted that playing in the Premier League is an attractive prospect. On his Instagram live, as transcribed by GOAL, he claimed that he would like to improve his English, but is concentrating on playing for Lazio.

He said:

“I’d like to play in the Premier League. Right now, I am concentrating on Lazio, but I enjoy the English league too. I would want to improve my English and I will do that.”

Spurs now must do all they can to persuade Correa that his future lies in London, not in Paris.

Abdoulaye Doucoure suffers foot injury

Everton have suffered a huge injury blow after it was revealed star midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure has suffered a serious issue to his foot.

What’s the word?

The in-form 28-year-old has been the Toffees’ standout performer in the opening weeks of the current campaign, but he’s set for an extended spell on the sidelines after picking up a potential stress fracture.

It was initially believed that Doucoure had suffered a broken foot, with Paul Joyce, the Northern Football Correspondent for The Times, relaying the initial news.

He tweeted: “Everton concerned Abdoulaye Doucoure is facing lengthy time out with broken foot.”

However, the Merseyside outfit have since provided an update on the Frenchman’s situation, releasing an official statement on the club’s website.

“Everton can confirm that Abdoulaye Doucoure has suffered a stress response in a bone in his foot sustained during Sunday’s match against West Ham United,” the statement reads.

“The French midfielder is being assessed by the Club’s medical team at USM Finch Farm and is undergoing further investigation to determine the full extent of the injury. Contrary to reports, Doucoure will not require an operation.”

Rafa Benitez will be gutted

News that Doucoure is set to be on the treatment table for several weeks will leave Everton manager Rafa Benitez feeling gutted.

The box-to-box dynamo has been in fabulous form this season, bagging two goals and providing four assists in his eight Premier League appearances – a superior contribution to the entirety of the previous campaign in 21 games fewer.

His defensive attributes will also be a huge loss to the Toffees with the French brute winning 2.5 tackles per game this term, a tally only bettered by Allan.

And injuries to fellow midfielders Andre Gomes and Fabian Delph will leave the Blues extremely short of options in the engine room when Watford visit Goodison Park over the weekend.

It means the likes of Tom Davies and Jean-Philippe Gbamin will have to step up in Doucoure’s absence, gifting the youngsters a rare chance to impress from the off.

Man United fans flock to ten Hag news

Flocking to Twitter, many Manchester United fans have absolutely erupted over a managerial update involving their club and Dutch title-winner Erik ten Hag.

After the Red Devils succumbed to a humiliating loss against Liverpool at the weekend, conceding five without reply to their arch rivals at Old Trafford, it’s safe to say Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s position has been under scrutiny.

The United legend has been at the centre of reports hinting he could be grasping on to his tenure by a thread as his side lay seventh in the Premier League table and eight points behind leaders Chelsea.

Given the amount of star power in their squad, not to mention summer investment, it is little surprise Solskjaer is under pressure and there have already been murmurs of who could replace the Norwegian if he is given his marching orders.

The Daily Mail claim that one man United are considering to potentially replace the 48-year-old is Ajax manager ten Hag – with journalist Sami Mokbel writing that he is ‘touted as a potential replacement’ for Solskjaer amid his links to Newcastle.

Flocking to this update, which one supporter called a ‘dream’, it’s safe to say many other Red Devils want to see ten Hag replace their current under-fire boss.

Journalist thinks Japhet Tanganga could become key for Spurs

The Evening Standard’s Jack Rosser believes that Japhet Tanganga’s versatility could see him become a key player under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Tanganga has been part of the Tottenham first-team for just over 18 months having been handed his Premier League debut by Jose Mourinho in January 2020.

His man of the match performance that evening quickly saw him established as part of the senior side, only for COVID-19 and injuries to halt his momentum.

Despite his lack of experience at the highest level, Tanganga has been trusted to start against the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and even in the Champions League, passing the majority with flying colours.

He’s played predominately as a centre-back but proved himself as more than capable of filling in at both left and right-back, a factor which Rosser thinks could see the youngster become crucial to the Tottenham manager, especially with their current defensive problems.

He told Football FanCast:

“I think he’s someone that Spurs see having a bright future and would quite like to keep in house.

“His versatility, someone that can play centre-back and full-back, he’s someone that will be of a lot of value to Nuno.”
