Centuries to Henry Hunt and Jake Lehmann have defending champions South Australia early control of their Sheffield Shield match against Victoria at Adelaide Oval.Victoria captain Peter Handscomb’s decision to bowl looked the right call when Mitchell Perry took his third wicket in the morning session, leaving the home side in trouble at 58 for 3.That brought together Hunt and Lehmann, who steadily took the game away from Victoria and at stumps SA were 270 for 3. Hunt carried his bat through the day and scored a grinding 121 from 300 balls, with 10 fours and one six. Lehmann’s 107 from 180 balls, featuring only seven fours on a slow outfield, was his fourth century in as many Shield games going back to last season.Victoria could have had South Australia in even bigger early trouble. Hunt had reached 33 and the score was 114 when he drove at a wide delivery from pacer David Moody and edged straight to Blake Macdonald at first slip. But the chance was grassed and it proved costly for Victoria. It was the slowest of Hunt’s 11 Shield centuries and he said Lehmann’s innings had been pivotal.”The momentum shifted when he came out – his presence at the crease, to put some pressure back on [Victoria],” Hunt said. “To be 270 for 3, that’s almost a perfect day for us.”Perry finished with 3 for 61 from 20 overs while Test quick Scott Boland went wicketless from 18 overs and Fergus O’Neill also failed to a scalp from his 21 overs.

Leeds eye tricky January deal to sign £20m forward similar to Summerville

Leeds United have their eyes on a tricky January transfer to sign a new forward who has been compared to Crysencio Summerville.

Leeds’ lack of goals in Premier League as 49ers eye forward

The Whites have struggled in front of goal so far following their return to the Premier League, with centre-back Joe Rodon the club’s joint top scorer in the top flight.

Daniel Farke’s side have only scored 10 goals in 11 games, with bottom of the table Wolves the only team to score fewer (7).

Only three attacking additions were made over the summer, two of which were free transfers in Lukas Nmecha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. It is looking like a decision the 49ers Enterprises could live to regret, but they do have their eyes on attacking reinforcements in the New Year.

Brazilian forward Jhon Jhon is one name that has emerged in recent weeks, and he already has Red Bull links at RB Bragantino in the Brazilian Serie A. Journalist Graeme Bailey said:

“He’s a fascinating player. Very interesting. A bit of an attacking midfielder, can play as a forward. His name has come up in conversations with Red Bull, and he’s within the Red Bull name. He’s a good age, good player. Ticks a lot of boxes.

“Leeds aren’t the only ones looking. He’s come up in conversations, and one I’d not heard before until recently.”

Domestically, Coventry City’s Haji Wright is another attacker who has been linked with a move to Elland Road in recent months, and there has been a fresh claim regaring the Whites taking the USA international in the New Year.

Update on Leeds’ move for Haji Wright

According to TEAMtalk, Leeds have four attacking targets who they could move for in January, one of which is Wright.

It is stated that the Whites ‘have a genuine interest in signing Wright’ and ‘the club are considering a concrete move for a player they have tracked since the summer’.

A deal is viewed as tricky with Coventry top of the Championship, however, Wright’s contract is set to expire in 2027.

Despite the difference in size, Wright has been compared to former Leeds attacker Summerville due to his ability to play off the left.

Primarily a centre-forward, though, the 27-year-old has scored eight Championship goals in 14 appearances so far this season.

Labelled as a “constant problem” for defenders to keep tabs on by his manager Frank Lampard, it has previously been suggested that an offer of £20m could be required to sign Wright.

David Ortiz Gives His Reasoning for Why Rafael Devers Should Get His Third Base Wish

Rafael Devers has not backed down from his desire to be the Boston Red Sox's third baseman in 2025, a position he's played throughout his entire career.

The Red Sox signed reigning AL Gold Glove winner Alex Bregman during the offseason, and while there had been some expectation that he would take over in the hot corner, the team may end up deploying him at second base amid Devers's unwillingness to change positions.

The situation has developed into somewhat of a controversy ahead of spring training, and franchise legend David Ortiz is the latest to weigh in with his thoughts on the matter. Speaking to Z101 Digital, Ortiz sided with Devers in the debate, suggesting the Red Sox should allow the 28-year-old to remain at third base.

"You are not talking about just another ball player, you are talking about Rafael Devers, the current David Ortiz-type player the Red Sox have. Listen to me, that's the team's best player. Bregman might have better defensive numbers, I'll give you that. But you are not talking about a 'Mickey Mouse' type of player, you are talking about Rafael Devers," Ortiz said, translated by MLB insider Hector Gomez.

It's not characteristically different from what current teammate Triston Casas had to say.

Ortiz indicated that risking making Devers disgruntled by forcing him to change positions would not be in the best interest of the team. Ortiz compared Devers' stardom to that of his own during his 14-year career in Boston and suggested that he's earned the right to continue manning the hot corner for the team.

Is it over for Neymar? Santos inform star's father of contract decision as talk of possible Lionel Messi reunion at Inter Miami gains steam

Neymar may be heading for the exit at Santos as the club have informed the player's father and agent that they are hesitant over offering him a new contract. The Brazil star is in danger of missing out on a place at the World Cup amid his ongoing injury problems and a move at the end of the year appears a possibility, with his deal expiring in two months.

  • Neymar's future up in the air

According to, Neymar Sr had established contact with Santos to discuss a potential six-month contract extension, since his son's tenure at the Serie A club comes to a close at the end of this year. However, the Brazilian outfit have not shown interest in extending his contract. The player, too, has a similar stance, as he has fallen out of the pecking order in the Brazil national team ever since Carlo Ancelotti took over the reins from Dorival Junior. Since joining in June, Ancelotti is yet to call Neymar to the national camp, and has bestowed his faith on other potential candidates in his position.

    Neymar's injury troubles continue

Since 2023, Neymar has been plagued by injuries since his days at Paris Saint-Germain. His lucrative transfer to Al-Hilal did not make the situation any better, as months after joining the club, the 33-year-old succumbed to a cruciate ligament tear, which kept him out for almost a year. Soon after recovery, he again surfaced with a hamstring injury, finally leaving the club in January this year to return to his boyhood club Santos. But the hamstring issue seems to be recurring frequently, forcing him to miss numerous matches, not only for the club but for country as well. Ancelotti said of him this month: "Neymar can play at his highest level in this team without any problems. When he is in good physical condition, he has the quality to play not only in Brazil but in any team in the world because of his talent."

  • Lionel Messi reunion on the cards?

Although there haven't been any prominent decisions taken by the player's entourage, recent reports have claimed his reunion with ex-Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at Inter Miami in MLS. Inter Miami believe they will be able to afford him due to Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba's retirement, creating room for Neymar's inclusion as a Designated Player alongside Messi and probably Rodrigo De Paul.

    What next for Neymar?

Neymar's contract ends on December 31, and until that date, he remains a part of Santos. His latest hamstring injury on September 19 has already sidelined him for over a month, and his date of return is yet to be known. However, if he recovers soon, fans can expect him to feature against Fortalexa on November 3, which is Santos' next game after a short break.

Crystal Palace now want "top" £100k-a-week star to replace Marc Guehi

Crystal Palace have been one of the form teams in the Premier League this term and could now look to the top-flight for a Marc Guehi replacement.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi responds to transfer speculation

Plenty of speculation followed Crystal Palace star Guehi around this summer. Nevertheless, a last-minute move to Liverpool fell through for the England international, who is out of contract at Selhurst Park in 2026.

In an open conversation surrounding his future, the former Chelsea man made it clear on international duty that his only priority at present is focusing on securing his place in England’s World Cup squad.

He said: “For me, it doesn’t really matter, to be honest. As long as I’m playing well and helping Palace, there’s definitely an opportunity for me to be here as I am today.

“Whether it’s sorted or not, it’s not really the most important thing to be honest. Personally, I don’t know if I can think that far ahead. I like to just take it step by step, and that is just focusing on the games that I have at Palace and any upcoming opportunities I have here.”

Oliver Glasner has also been targeted by Nottingham Forest due to being out of contract next summer. Ultimately, Crystal Palace are a club on the up, and others are keen to prize away their main assets after an excellent start to the Premier League campaign.

Negotiations have been opened.

Rumours are unlikely to die down if success is continually delivered at Selhurst Park. Either way, putting contingencies in place to prepare for the future will be a key part of their upcoming plans.

With that in mind, Crystal Palace have identified a potential replacement for Guehi should clubs continue to make their interest in his services known.

Crystal Palace want to sign Max Kilman to replace Marc Guehi

According to Football Insider and journalist Wayne Veysey, Crystal Palace want to sign West Ham defender Max Kilman to replace Guehi, and they could now make a January move to try and secure his services.

However, any deal will be a difficult one to do amid Nuno Espírito Santo’s admiration towards the defender, who was a key part of his Wolverhampton Wanderers side when both worked together at Molineux.

The London-born man is under contract at West Ham until 2031 and arrived at the Hammers for £40 million on a contract worth £100,000 per week, hence why it may take a significant push to tempt Kilman into crossing the divide.

Making eight appearances this term across all competitions, the 28-year-old has been ever-present on the left-hand side of their backline, and it now remains to be seen whether he would be open to a change of scenery.

Crystal Palace could well mount a credible challenge for the European places this term and Kilman could be tempted by the prospect of replacing such a key figure, though it will be interesting to see if Guehi is sold in January to make room.

It is also worth noting that quality strikers, like Villa’s Ollie Watkins, have called Kilman a “top player”.

Lauren Winfield-Hill joins Essex on loan from Yorkshire for Blast

Lauren Winfield-Hill has joined Essex on loan from Yorkshire for the upcoming Women’s Vitality Blast.Winfield-Hill is captain of Yorkshire, currently competing in Tier 2 of the new women’s domestic competitions, and a move to Essex offers the chance to play in the top tier for the T20 competition starting on May 29. Essex will play their first match the following day, away to Hampshire.Winfield-Hill was part of the Northern Diamonds team which was disbanded under the move to county-based teams from this season onwards, and has been supportive of her former team-mates who had decided to move, many to Durham, to play in Tier 1 immediately.Speaking before her loan move to Essex, Winfield-Hill told ESPNcricinfo that with Yorkshire set to move into the top flight from next season, this year presented unique challenges for the club, such as balancing player development with competing under the heavy expectations of a fully professional side.Related

“It does look a bit different for senior players in terms of the Tier 2 cricket,” Winfield-Hill told ESPNcricinfo. “I always use the analogy of revving a car. It’s not just like, ‘oh, you’re just cruisy, see what happens, it’s Tier 2’. It’s actually getting into that sweet spot of still really competing. That’s the key thing for a lot of the senior players in the group, is how we get our beans going and compete and almost play games within games sometimes.”As Essex announced her loan signing on Wednesday, Winfield-Hill said the deal “makes perfect sense”.”I want to keep testing myself by playing at the highest level possible, and this move means that I can do that in what is set to be a groundbreaking year for women’s cricket in England,” she said. “I really feel like I can bring something to the group here at Essex, and I’m excited to play in a new environment at Chelmsford, too.”Winfield-Hill has represented her country 104 times across all three formats, most recently for the T20 leg of England’s winter tour of West Indies in late 2022. She has also played in franchise leagues around the world, including the Hundred, WBBL and CPL.An ODI World Cup winner in 2017, she has 19 half-centuries in T20 cricket, with a top score of 98 off 56 balls for Northern Diamonds against Western Storm in the 2023 Charlotte Edwards Cup.Winfield-Hill is also a capable wicketkeeper, having assumed the role throughout her four seasons in The Hundred to date, and from that position has claimed 38 stumpings, as well as 24 of her 91 total catches in the format.Charlotte Edwards, the new England Women’s head coach, was at Hove on Saturday to watch Yorkshire bounce back from a 114-run, first-round loss against Worcestershire with a nine-wicket thrashing of Sussex in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup. Winfield-Hill scored 8 in the first game and an unbeaten 47 off 43 balls in the second.Edwards made it clear upon taking the England post that domestic cricket represented on opportunity for players to press their claims for international selection.Asked if she still saw a place for herself in that landscape, Winfield-Hill told ESPNcricinfo: “I’m obviously not retired and I’ve got a lot of cricket ahead of me. The last couple of years I’ve probably played better than I did when I was wearing an England shirt, which is ironic.”I still think my best years are ahead of me, I just don’t necessarily realistically think that’s in an England shirt. My desire to play for England will never waver, but I think at times you feel like you’ve got more hope than other times.”If that ship has sailed, that ship has sailed. If a couple of players went down and you’re sort of looking around and you’re performing well, then you’re not going to say no to playing for England ever. At the minute it’s probably not a realistic way in for me, and that’s fine, but I’m certainly not retiring, I’m not pulling curtains on my England career.”Andy Tennant, Team Director of Essex Women, was delighted to secure a player of Winfield-Hill’s experince and proven run-scoring ability.”When the chance to sign her became available, it was one that we worked really hard to complete, because we knew how much of a positive influence she is capable of bringing as a role model for our young and developing player group,” he said. “The opportunity to add Lauren’s experience and game sense is every bit as valuable as seeing her out in the middle scoring runs for Essex.”

Jacob Bethell 'ruled out' of Champions Trophy, Tom Banton called to India as cover

Hamstring injury leaves England looking at potential replacements ahead of Australia opener

Buttler: ‘We are making steps in right direction’

England batter Jacob Bethell is set to miss the Champions Trophy after sustaining a left hamstring injury* on the tour of India. Bethell missed Sunday’s second ODI in Cuttack, with England captain Jos Buttler saying afterwards he was unlikely to be fit for the tournament, which starts in 10 days’ time.”I’m pretty sure he’s been ruled out of the Champions Trophy, to be honest,” Buttler said. “That’s really disappointing for him, obviously he played nicely the other day and has been one of the really exciting players so it’s a shame that the injury is going to rule him out.”With Jamie Smith still recovering from a calf issue – the tourists were forced to name assistant coaches Marcus Trescothick and Paul Collingwood as sub-fielders in Cuttack – Somerset’s Tom Banton has been drafted into the squad as cover, and will arrive in India on Monday. The extent of Bethell’s injury will be established in the coming days, with England yet to make an official announcement about his status. England’s Champions Trophy campaign kicks off on February 22, against Australia in Lahore, and there is optimism around Smith’s recovery, with the wicketkeeper-batter taking part in the warm-ups on Sunday. The deadline for announcing replacements to the 15-man Champions Trophy squad is February 12.Bethell impressed with 51 and 1 for 18 with his left-arm spin in the first ODI against India, which the hosts won by four wickets. Having also performed well on his maiden Test tour of New Zealand at the end of 2024, with three half-centuries and an average of 52, he has been earmarked by head coach Brendon McCullum as a vital cog across all formats.Banton, meanwhile, has a chance to reignite his international career, having earned the last of his 20 white-ball caps in 2022. Though he has underwhelmed for England so far, with just three fifty-plus scores across four ODIs and 16 T20Is, he is in a rich vein of form off the back of a stellar ILT20, topping the competition’s batting charts. The 26-year-old struck 493 runs in 11 outings for MI Emirates, including two centuries, as the franchise reached the Eliminator stage where they were defeated by Sharjah Warriors.1900 GMT – This story was updated with Jos Buttler’s post-match quotes

Bayern Munich player ratings vs Chelsea: Harry Kane haunts his old rivals – brace from England captain and Michael Olise see German giants to Champions League win

Bayern Munich beat Chelsea 3-1 in a breathless, end-to-end Champions League thriller on Wednesday evening. The Bavarians, against the run of play, had the lead after 20 minutes. Michael Olise fronted up Joao Pedro in his own box and beat him with his rapid feet before crossing into the six-yard box, where Trevoh Chalobah inadvertently turned the ball into his own goal.

Just six minutes later, Harry Kane won a penalty from a Moises Caicedo foul and dispatched it into the bottom corner to extend Bayern's lead. To cap a breathless period, Cole Palmer pulled a goal back seconds later, driving from deep, exchanging passes with Malo Gusto, and finishing brilliantly.

On the hour, a brilliant Bayern move opened Chelsea up and Kane teed up Olise in the area, but his finish was superbly saved by Robert Sanchez in goal. The hosts would not be denied, though, and Kane added Bayern's third with a fine finish from just inside the area after Malo Gusto's attempted slide tackle fell to the England captain.  Palmer thought he had pulled a goal back in the 90th minute, but his clever dinked finish was ruled out for offside.

Manuel Neuer (6/10):

Had no chance with Palmer's brilliant finish. Didn't have much else to do, truth be told.

Konrad Laimer (6/10):

Solid defensively and got forward whenever the play allowed him to. Had one major opportunity to score but couldn't take it. Still, a solid night.

Dayot Upamecano (7/10):

Pressured Chalobah into his own goal; if the Chelsea defender hadn't put it in, Upamecano would have. A rock in defence, too.

Jonathan Tah (5/10):

Struggled with the pace of the game at times, even if he did put his body on the line. Booked and replaced by Kim at half-time.

Josip Stanisic (5/10):

All of Chelsea's most promising attacks came down Stanisic's side. Try as he might, he isn't Alphonso Davies. Took a nasty fall when jumping for a header and injured himself in the process. Replaced by Boey.

Joshua Kimmich (6/10):

Bypassed very easily by Palmer before his goal. Grew into the game, though, and played the role of metronome as well – as he always does.

Aleksandar Pavlovic (5/10):

Sat in but the game was so end-to-end that he struggled to break up the play. Unsurprisingly, his difficult evening came to an early end when he was subbed.

Getty Images SportAttack

Michael Olise (8/10):

Superb work to beat Pedro and put in a great cross that led to the own goal. Terrified Chelsea every time he had the ball; his touch is velvet, and he creates things out of nothing. A virtuoso display.

Serge Gnabry (7/10):

Busy and always buzzing around the most dangerous areas of the pitch. Gusto's tackle on him led to Kane's goal.

Harry Kane (8/10):

Won and scored Bayern's penalty. Also showed a true striker's interest to finish and complete his brace after intercepting Gusto's tackle. A terrific night against his old Spurs rivals.

Luis Diaz (6/10):

Always trying to make something happen but was more limited than Olise down his side. Spurned a late chance to make it 4-1 when one-on-one.

Kim Min-Jae (7/10):

Replaced Tah at half-time. Transmitted an air of calm to his team-mates, passing out of defence very well.

Sacha Boey (6/10):

On for the stricken Stanisic. Bombed on whenever he could as he didn't have as much to do as the man he replaced.

Leon Goretzka (6/10):

On for Pavlovic. Slotted into midfield like the consummate pro he is.

Nicolas Jackson (N/A):

On against his parent club for injury time. Tried to score from the halfway line but got it wrong.

Tom Bischof (N/A):

Another injury-time sub.

Vincent Kompany (7/10):

Got this bang on. Bayern negotiated a tricky opening spell well, and ultimately used their nous and experience to get over the line. Every sub worked, and Bayern already have three points from one of the tougher matches of their league phase.
