Brewers Manager Praises Team of ‘Average Joes’ After Sweep of Star-Studded Dodgers

The Milwaukee "average Joes" put MLB on notice this weekend after sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers for the second time this season. The Brewers officially took down the Dodgers in all six games this season and are tied for the best record in the National League on Sunday. They are riding a 10-game winning streak, and are undoubtedly the hottest team in the league after defeating the reigning World Series champions.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy did not let it go unnoticed that the relatively unknown Milwaukee players swept a star-studded Dodgers team featuring multiple league MVPs and future Hall of Famers.

“It’s a bunch of guys nobody has ever heard of, a bunch of average Joes," Murphy said after the game, via The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

“It’s pretty cool to have all those guys, the Collins, the Durbin’s, the Perkins, the Ortizes know they’re a huge part of this thing.”

The Brewers didn't just beat the Dodgers, but left them frustrated. Meanwhile, Milwaukee has risen to the top of the National League Central, alongside the Chicago Cubs, as they aim to win their third straight division crown and postseason appearance.

Murphy still believes his team has a lot of room for improvement, but also took a moment to express that he is really proud of the players for the hunger and fire they've brought this season to defeat teams like the Dodgers.

“You gotta understand that this is a bunch of people that have gotten to this point and kept clawing away," Murphy said. "We’re hungry. I’m really, really proud of them. We’ve got work to do. We can improve in every way that we can. But you can at least feel like we’re capable.”

Man Utd now eyeing record-breaking Lammens upgrade who's "good with his feet"

Manchester United are now targeting a record-breaking goalkeeper who’s “good with his feet”, and there are signs he could rival Senne Lammens for a starting spot.

Man Utd looking to sign new goalkeeper to rival Lammens

After arriving from Club Brugge at the end of the summer transfer window, Lammens’ introduction to the Man United starting XI has been gradual, with the Belgian making his first start in the 2-0 victory over Sunderland prior to the international break.

Having kept a clean sheet in his opening game, the 23-year-old is off to a solid start, making two saves from inside the box to keep Sunderland at bay, which resulted in a 7.8 SofaScore match rating, the highest of any player.

The Stretford End were clearly left impressed by their new goalkeeper’s performance, chating ‘Are you Schmeichel in disguise’, but it is still very early days, with a difficult trip to Anfield to come on Sunday.

Having struggled to find a suitable no.1 since the departure of David de Gea, Ruben Amorim will be hoping Lammens is the long-term solution between the sticks, but The Red Devils have now joined the race for another goalkeeper.

That is according to a report from The Boot Room, which reveals SC Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu has emerged as a genuine target for Man United, having watched him in action multiple times already this season.

Graeme Bailey adds that United want to bring in a new goalkeeper regardless of how Lammens performs, with the journalist also hinting that a deal for Atubolu could be possible.

The Red Devils are very keen on bringing in a new midfielder.

Bailey said: “United are doing their due diligence on goalkeepers, even if [Senne] Lammens comes in and does well, they still want and need another, as [Andre] Onana and [Altay] Bayindir won’t be hanging around in the long-term.

“They are well-versed on options, but I am told that Atubolu is one who has impressed United’s scouts this season. He is emerging as one of the very best in the Bundesliga, and Freiburg are expecting to sell in 2026.”

Record-breaking Atubolo could be instant Lammens upgrade

Lammens is off to a fantastic start at Old Trafford, but there are signs the Freiburg shot-stopper could be an instant upgrade, having already proven himself at a higher level than the former Club Brugge man.

In the 2024-25 season, the 23-year-old broke a Freiburg club record by going 576 minutes without conceding a goal, and he has since gone on to break a Bundesliga record by saving five penalties on the spin.

Not only has the German goalkeeper established himself as a top Bundesliga goalkeeper, but he is also better with his feet than Lammens, placing in the top 1% for touches per 90 over the past year.

Freiburg manager Julian Schuster has praised Atubolu in the past too, saying: “He has good reflexes. He makes good saves and is also good with his feet. We’re very happy to have him.”

It is always difficult to keep two goalkeepers happy, so it would be a risk to sign the Freiburg star, but there are clear signs he could challenge Lammens for a starting spot.

Fewer touches than Kinsky: Frank must axe 5/10 Spurs dud after Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur crashed out of the fourth round of the Carabao Cup last night, losing 2-0 against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United side at St James’ Park.

Thomas Frank’s men were sunk after two goals from Fabian Schar and Nick Woltemade, subsequently offering very little in return at the opposite end of the pitch.

The Dane will no doubt be disappointed with the defeat, but the nature of it too, especially after being unable to find the back of the net with any of their six shots on target.

Such a defeat crosses off the first opportunity for the new manager to get his hands on a piece of silverware after taking the reins during the off-season.

However, regardless of the result, the performance will be the most infuriating aspect for the boss, with numerous players struggling to take advantage of the start handed their way.

Spurs’ poor performers against Newcastle

Richarlison started the 2025/26 season in excellent fashion, scoring twice on the opening day, but the Brazilian has massively failed to deliver over the last few months.

The 28-year-old started the clash against the Magpies last night, but once again struggled, as seen by his tally of just nine passes completed and one big chance missed.

The centre-forward also failed to complete any of the dribbles, crosses or long balls he attempted – ultimately being hugely wasteful in all aspects of his game.

Richarlison wasn’t alone in failing to deliver, with midfielder Pape Sarr unable to stake his claim for a regular role once again in his first start since the end of September.

The Senegalese international was restricted in his double pivot role with Rodrigo Bentancur, subsequently losing possession on ten separate occasions on Tyneside.

The 23-year-old likes to operate with freedom to allow him to create chaos, something which he was unable to do, as seen by his tally of zero dribbles completed.

Despite the showings from the aforementioned duo, one other Lilywhites star massively struggled against Howe’s side, with Frank needing to drop him from his starting eleven.

The Spurs star who needs to be dropped after Newcastle

Last night’s defeat against Newcastle was just the third competitive defeat of the Frank era at Spurs, but it will no doubt highlight the areas of improvement for the manager.

After replacing Ange Postecoglou in the summer, the 51-year-old was handed over £100m worth of funds to make the changes he required to the first team squad.

Mohammed Kudus was his biggest addition at a staggering £55m, but the Ghanaian was dropped to the substitutes bench and only brought on with 25 minutes remaining.

His tally of one goal and four assists in the Premier League highlights his immediate impact in North London, subsequently nailing down the right-wing position as his own.

As a result, Brennan Johnson has often been limited to minutes off the bench himself, but given Kudus’ rest, the Welshman was handed the chance to start from the off.

It was the 24-year-old’s second start in a row after featuring against Everton on Sunday, but once again, he failed to repay the manager for the faith shown in him.

The winger featured for just 65 minutes against the Magpies before being replaced, subsequently showcasing his lack of positive impact on the pitch.

He only achieved a total of 28 touches during the defeat – a tally fewer than goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, who managed 50 – whilst also completing just 11 passes.

Johnson also attempted four crosses on Tyneside, but none of which were able to find a teammate – but he also struggled to have an individual impact as he failed to register a single shot on target.

Other tallies, such as 100% ground duels lost and 14 times possession lost, further indicate his struggles, with Frank desperately needing to drop him from his starting eleven.

To top off his dismal night, Johnson was handed a measly 5/10 match rating by The Standard’s Matt Verri – further showcasing how disappointing he was during his 65-minute showing.

The manager will no doubt be hugely disappointed with the Welshman’s inability to impress, with the Dane certainly needing to drop him against Chelsea on Saturday.

Kudus has certainly cemented such a position within the Lilywhites squad, with Johnson now needing to get used to limited minutes off the bench.

Forget Kudus: Spurs star is rapidly becoming one of the "best in the world"

Tottenham Hotspur now have a world-class talent on their books under Thomas Frank.

Cubs Reliever Accomplished Extremely Rare MLB Feat in Win vs. Reds

Chicago Cubs relief pitcher Andrew Kittredge accomplished a feat rarely seen in baseball history. In Wednesday's 6-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds, he struck out three straight batters in just nine pitches for an incredibly rare immaculate inning.

It was Kittredge's only inning of the game, and he was sure to make quick work of it. He got each punch out on nasty sliders that ended up getting the Reds' bats to chase and sent his squad back to the dugout in short order.

Miami Marlins starter Cal Quantrill tossed an immaculate inning earlier this season, which is mathematically even more rare than throwing a perfect game. Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto came close this season too, but was robbed of the feat on a very iffy call.

Cubs catcher Carson Kelly admitted he didn't even realize the immaculate inning was in play until the last pitch.

"I was like wow, he went sinker, sinker, slider, sinker, sinker, slider, sinker, sinker, slider," Kelly said postgame with a smirk, via Marquee Sports Network. "It was pretty cool to be a part of that and I think we kept the ball so, I don't know what he's going to do with it but all-in-all, pretty special."

Kittredge was acquired by the Cubs at last week's trade deadline and was booed Tuesday after he let up four runs in less than an inning against the Reds. He took that personally, and gave the fans at Wrigley Field something immaculate to cheer for the next day.

Longest Playoff Droughts in MLB History, Active & All Time

Last season, one of the longest postseason droughts in MLB finally came to an end after the Tigers reached the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Now, the Angels stand alone as the owners of the longest active playoff drought.

It's not looking likely that the Halos will be playing into October this season, either, so their league-leading streak of 10 straight seasons without a postseason berth could increase to 11. We'll take a look at some of the longest playoff droughts in the league history.

Longest Postseason Droughts in MLB History

Throughout MLB history, there have been some extremely long postseason droughts, though none of the recent stretches have been longer than that of the Montreal Expos, who's playoff drought eventually transferred to the Washington Nationals when the franchise relocated. From 1982 to 2011, the Expos/Nationals were held out of the postseason, a streak that lasted 29 years. Prior to 1969, the teams with the best record in American League and National League met in the World Series, without any expanded postseason play.

That drought remains the longest ever in MLB's divisional era, and we'll compare how it stacks up against some of the other lengthy droughts throughout league history, as well as since the introduction of the divisional era in 1969.

Mariano Rivera Hit a Base Knock Off Andy Pettitte at Yankees Old-Timers' Day

Mariano Rivera made the most of an opportunity to pick up the lumber Saturday at Yankees Old-Timers' Day.

New York's traditional alumni game commemorated the 25th anniversary of their 2000 World Series team which included Yankee legends like Rivera, Andy Pettitte, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada. The game, which normally spans two or three innings, gave the Hall of Fame closer a chance to step up to the plate as Pettitte was on the hill.

Rivera was locked in and laced a ground ball through the infield and into left for a single. The base hit moved Posada to second and put a big smile on Rivera's face as he rounded first base and laughed with Pettitte while getting some praise from Johnny Damon.

Not too shabby from Major League Baseball's all-time leader in saves:

Rivera didn't record a hit over his illustrious 19-year career that included 13 All-Star appearances and five World Series titles. He only had four plate appearances and three at-bats, though. There's no reason for a closer—especially one in the American League while Rivera played—to take at-bats. Maybe he should've gotten a chance here and there at the dish, though.

His hard-hit ball on Pettitte is a base hit in any league.
