Fewer touches than Butland: Rohl must axe Rangers man who lost the ball 11x

Thursday nights in the Europa League have so often provided Rangers supporters with a sanctuary away from the misery of domestic results.

Well, this season, they’re not even getting that.

This week, the Gers were easily swatted aside 2-0 by Roma, with Matías Soulé ghosting in at the back post to break the deadlock, before Lorenzo Pellegrini slotted home the second, teed up by Artem Dovbyk, rubber-stamping victory for the Giallorossi in Govan.

Having also been beaten by Brann in Bergan and Celtic in Sunday’s League Cup semi-finals at Hampden, Danny Röhl has become the first permanent Rangers manager in history to suffer three defeats from his first five matches in charge; not even Russell Martin started this badly!

Thus, the German faces some tough selection decisions ahead of Sunday’s potentially tricky trip to Dens Park to take on Dundee, but which player in particular deserves to drop out of the lineup?

Rangers' miserable European run

As recently as January, Rangers set the Scottish record for most away European matches unbeaten, a streak of seven games ended by Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Now, they are in danger of also setting the record for most successive European defeats by a Scottish club.

Thursday night’s 2-0 loss at the hands of Roma leaves the Light Blues rock bottom of the Europa League table, having finished eighth last time round, also beaten by Genk, Sturm Graz and Brann in this season’s league phase so far, conceding eight goals and scoring only once.

Overall, the Gers have now lost seven successive outings in UEFA competition, following qualification defeats at the hands of Viktoria Plzeň and Club Brugge twice in August.

The unwanted record is held by Motherwell, who lost eight consecutive games in continental competition between 2010 and 2012, beaten home and away by Odense, Panathinaikos, Levante and Kuban Krasnodar.

Up next for Rangers, Braga will visit Ibrox later this month, before they’ll conclude the league phase with games against Ferencváros, Ludogorets Razgrad and Porto, so more defeats could very much be coming their way in the near future.

Before then, as they go in search of three precious Premiership points at Dens on Sunday, which summer signing suggested that they are not up to the level that Röhl requires?

The Rangers flop Danny Röhl must axe

Following Sunday’s energy-sapping clash with Celtic, playing close to 90 minutes with ten men at Hampden, Röhl made four changes against Roma, with Max Aarons, Connor Barron, Djeidi Gassama and Mikey Moore restored to the lineup.

However, Moore in particular did not stake a case for more regular playing time, as the table below highlights.

As the table documents, Moore did show glimpses of quality, attempting the most dribbles of any player on the pitch, producing two key passes and creating a big chance for Youssef Chermiti.

Nevertheless, these moments were far too infrequent, successful with only 40% of his dribbles, losing possession on 11 occasions, while winning just five of the 13 duels he contested.

The teenager was also a peripheral figure for long periods too, registering a miserly 35 touches during his 81 minutes on the pitch, which is fewer than both goalkeepers Jack Butland (45) and Mile Svilar (42).

When Moore arrived on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, he did so with sky-high expectations.

Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout labelled the “absolute top talent” as “the English Neymar”, while then-manager Martin called him an “outstanding young player”.

However, he is yet to show the Rangers fans much of this quality, still awaiting his first goal for the club, hence why former Gers midfielder Andy Halliday believes “Moore hasn’t shown me anything that tells me that Rangers should be developing a young Spurs player rather than developing their own”.

Moore was replaced by one of those homegrown prospects Findlay Curtis on Thursday, a player who does have three goals to his name this season, on target against Panathinaikos, Alloa Athletic and St Mirren.

Meantime, with Gassama, Danilo, Oliver Antman and Thelo Aasgaard also vying for the starting spots in behind the centre-forward, Moore’s performances, both against Roma and in general, have done little to suggest he should be high up Röhl’s pecking order.

Wolves star undergoes surgery and facing weeks out in new injury blow for Pereira

Wolverhampton Wanderers are still waiting for their first victory of the Premier League season and have suffered an injury blow as they look to get off the canvas.

Wolves prepare to face Brighton in crunch clash

Over the last couple of matches, Wolves have shown small improvements after an EFL Cup victory over Everton and an impressive draw away to Tottenham Hotspur, though there is still a long way to go for Vitor Pereira in his hunt for survival.

Sam Johnstone has emerged as a competent option between the sticks, helping to spark a mini-revival, and Express & Star reporter Liam Keen stated on the outlet’s podcast that he can see the England international growing in stature as he strikes up a fruitful relationship with the Old Gold backline.

He said: “I love the fact he was loud against Spurs. I think it’s really important to pick up on that. And actually, he did it a fair bit against Everton as well. I’m really pleased Johnstone has been able to show – even to a small extent if you will – how good a goalkeeper he can be.”

Jhon Arias has been a revelation behind the scenes at Wolves and is a sign of better things to come. However, they simply have to get off the mark with a first Premier League win of the season at home to Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday.

Sitting four points adrift, home matches at Molineux are pivotal if Pereira’s men want to climb the table, and there is a feeling that will need to happen sooner rather than later to avoid an unwanted scenario of staring down the barrel.

Three points would breed a new sense of optimism among a support who have had to deal with their fair share of frustration in recent times, though they will need to try and achieve that mission without one of their first-team regulars.

Wolves man Matt Doherty set for over a month on sidelines

Speaking after announcing his Republic of Ireland squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers, Heimir Hallgrimsson has confirmed Wolves man Matt Doherty is out for four to five weeks after fracturing his wrist.

He stated: “Jason Knight has a groin injury and is most likely out for four to five weeks. Matt Doherty has a fracture in his wrist and had an operation on it two days ago and is going to miss probably the same amount of time.”

Santiago Bueno says Wolves star is unreal in training and squad loved him instantly

Supporters of the Old Gold will feel optimistic after the latest update from Molineux.

BySean Markus Clifford Sep 29, 2025

Featuring frequently for the Old Gold, Doherty has made five appearances across all competitions this season, coming in at right-back and deputising in a central defensive role when needed.

Nevertheless, news of his injury will come as a substantial blow for Pereira, who now finds himself short on numbers on the right-hand side of his backline amid Ki-Jana Hoever’s knee problems.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe says no! Man Utd co-owner blocks shock transfer for Barcelona star in blow to Ruben Amorim

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has ended the club's pursuit of Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski despite Ruben Amorim being eager to bring the veteran to Old Trafford next summer. Lewandowski's existing deal at Barcelona expires at the end of the season and the Catalan giants are unlikely to offer the Polish forward an extension, which will make him a free agent.

Amorim wanted Lewandowski

According to , Amorim was looking forward to bringing Lewandowski to Old Trafford next summer once the veteran forward's Barcelona contract expired. The Poland legend is in the final year of his existing deal and as of now, there have been no talks of an extension between the striker and the Catalan club, which is a clear hint that the Spanish champions do not want to retain the player beyond the 2025-26 campaign.

Amorim wanted an experienced player like Lewandowski in the dressing room who could contribute goals and also help to inspire the club's youngsters.

AdvertisementgettyRatcliffe won't approve Lewandowski transfer

The report, however, also adds that Ratcliffe has denied Amorim's request as he is strictly against signing players who are in the twilight of their playing careers. In the past, United have run after big names like Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, Raphael Varane and Bastian Schweinsteiger but none of the signings have proved fruitful for the team and have instead cost the club millions of pounds in the transfer market and in wages.

At 37, Lewandowski continues to be among the highest-earning footballers in the world as he pockets a wage of around £540,000-a-week. Lewandowski's departure will bring huge relief for Barcelona, who continue to struggle financially and have regularly faced problems in registering players while complying with La Liga rules. United themselves have also struggled to manage their crippling finances and under such circumstances, signing Lewandowski is not a viable option.

Lewandowski's agent hinted at possible departure

Amid speculation over Lewandowski's situation at Barcelona, his agent Pini Zahavi recently dropped a major hint over the striker's future as he told : "Lewandowski's contract with Barcelona expires in the summer of 2026, and no decisions have been made yet. We'll have to wait and see what happens in the coming days."

Zahavi, however, dismissed rumours suggesting Lewandowski could head to the Saudi Pro League as he added: "There's nothing official regarding negotiations with Saudi Arabian teams. There are no offers at this time."

As Lewandowski's future remains uncertain, reports have emerged that the Catalan giants have started to prepare for life beyond their star striker, with Ferran Torres adapting to a central role under Hansi Flick this season. Sporting director Deco recently stated that Barcelona will not immediately pursue a replacement, yet names like Erling Haaland, Julian Alvarez and Etta Eyong continue to surface in reports.

GettyLewandowski ruled out of El Clasico

With the season's first El Clasico fast approaching, Barcelona are dealing with multiple injury setbacks. They are already missing the services of star winger Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski will not feature in the high-octane clash at Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.

Lewandowski returned from international duty after the October break with an injury as he was sent for medical tests after informing Barca of the issues regarding his left leg. It was later confirmed that Lewandowski will require a period of rest and will be sidelined for El Clasico. The statement from Barcelona read: "Robert Lewandowski has suffered a hamstring injury in his left thigh. He will be sidelined, and his recovery time will depend on how the injury progresses. The Polish striker has scored four goals in nine appearances so far in the 2025-26 season. His tally includes a brace against Valencia and goals against Oviedo and Real Sociedad. This season he has also scored two goals for Poland, the most recent coming during the October international break against Lithuania."

In Lewandowski's absence, Flick is likely to field Torres as his No.9 against Madrid, with in-form Marcus Rashford and Lamine Yamal operating from the two wings.

Not Nunez: Liverpool sold £65m "monster" who was their own version of Isak

The storm of the summer transfer window has passed, and Liverpool are now enjoying a welcome period through calmer waters as the first international break of the campaign takes centre stage.

Some might feel that the break came at the right time for Arne Slot’s Liverpool, who won the Premier League so confidently last year but have since undergone significant upheaval, something that showed across the opening matches of the campaign.

Liverpool produced a display of much greater solidity when beating Arsenal 1-0 at Anfield last weekend, and it’s worth stressing that while this new iteration of Redmen have their detractors, they have claimed nine points from nine and added Alexander Isak to their ranks on deadline day.

Some signing, that. Liverpool fought tooth and nail across many weeks to sign the 25-year-old marksman, but they secured their quarry and have scored a major upgrade on Darwin Nunez.

Why Liverpool signed Isak

Liverpool entered the summer transfer window with a single-track mind: they needed to sign an elite striker to lead Slot’s line.

It had been anticipated for a while that Nunez would be sold. The Uruguayan striker had struggled to kick on in Red across his three years at the club, with only 25 Premier League goals scored over his three campaigns, missing 53 big chances, as per Sofascore.

For such a staggering transfer fee, initially £64m with a view toward an £85m total package, Nunez flattered to deceive. In fact, Liverpool never forked out the full sum, for the forward never hit his stride.

It bears testament to sporting director Richard Hughes’ skill that he sold Nunez to Al Hilal this summer in a deal rising to £57m.

And now Liverpool have signed Isak. The Sweden international has linked up with his countrymen over in Scandinavia and will no doubt relish the chance for this sojourn ahead of his new chapter on Merseyside.

It was an unsavoury transfer saga, to be sure, but one which ended in joy for Liverpool. Along with Hugo Ekitike, the Anfield side have landed a big upgrade at number nine, with Isak in particular capable of blitzing his positional competition over the coming years.

While everything has worked out now, Liverpool did actually have an original version of the Swede in their ranks before, but they sold the Premier League star for a comparatively small fee.

Indeed, Dominic Solanke never found his footing at Liverpool.

Why it didn't work out for Solanke at Liverpool

Liverpool signed a 19-year-old Solanke on a free transfer from Chelsea in 2017, and he went on to make 27 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side, scoring his first and only goal on the final day of the 2017/18 Premier League season.

Dominic Solanke for Liverpool

Liverpool did well to turn a big profit on the youngster, selling him to Bournemouth for £19m. This move proved instrumental for the England international, who honed his skills across the first and second tiers and eventually earned himself the big-money move he had been touted for all those years earlier.

The 27-year-old joined Tottenham Hotspur from Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth for a club-record £65m fee in 2024, coming off the back of a remarkable 19-goal campaign on the south coast, underscoring his improvement from talented hopeful to reliable Premier League frontman.

While it hasn’t all been plain sailing for Solanke since earning his switch to the capital, with injuries limiting him last season, he has established himself as a talented and versatile central striker, described as a “pressing monster” by reporter George Sessions.

In this way, he might be something like Isak, who was hailed last year as being “the best all-round centre-forward” in the league by pundit Ally McCoist.

Isak's Premier League record before joining Liverpool.

Isak might not have kicked a ball for Liverpool yet, but he’s the benchmark, all right. Having proven himself over the past three years in the Premier League, it’s inconceivable that he would fall by the wayside.

Solanke, deceptively fast and just as powerful, isn’t in the same bracket, but he plays in a way that Liverpool have shown time and time again in recent years as being their stylistic preference at number nine.

FBref’s statistical data reveals that Solanke ranks among the top 17% of forwards across Europe over the past year for assists per 90, with his ranged approach to his game offering similarities to players such as Isak and Nunez (minus the latter’s profligacy).

Tottenham's Dominic Solanke

That said, rarely have we seen Solanke chalk up numbers of the same calibre as Isak, with his dynamism lending itself to a fluid attacking role, but the jury still out as to his goalscoring ability down N17, having posted 16 goals and eight assists across 48 matches for the Lilywhites so far.

If he can stay fit, Solanke might hit some rather fluent form at Newcastle this season, though, with the Danish tactician previously outlining his capacity to shape physical and athletic strikers into phenoms. Just look at Ivan Toney.

Ultimately, Liverpool might have once felt that they could have got more from the sale of Solanke, whose potential was always clear but whose circuitous journey to the top precluded a more linear route, but they won’t care now.

Even so, they missed out on millions, and having since paid a premium for a young Benfica prospect named Nunez, a bit more time invested in Solanke might have seen him become a star under Klopp and now Slot’s wings.

He has Isak-like qualities, after all.

Grealish would love him: Everton consider late bid for £25m "monster"

The Hill Dickinson Stadium came alive on Sunday afternoon, with a battling Everton performance making it a perfect start to life in their new home, beating Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0.

Everton are now on the board for the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, rebounding after a disappointing and contentious opening-week defeat to Leeds United at Elland Road.

Last week, Sky Sports’ Gary Neville remarked that Everton need “three or four more players” before the closure of the transfer market. Since then, a £40m deal has been agreed for Southampton youngster Tyler Dibling.

The Toffees still need a right-back and will consider further positions too. However, the signing of Jack Grealish on loan from Manchester City has done much for the club already, the 29-year-old starring as Everton overcame Brighton on their new patch of Merseyside.

Jack Grealish's dream start

Grealish repaid the faith on his home debut as an Everton player, notching two excellent assists as Moyes’ side claimed their first points of the season.

Jack-Grealish-Everton

Defeat against the Seagulls would have left a sour taste for the Merseysiders, but they proved that the spirit of Goodison Park lives on within a new setting, this blue sea charging a tenacious and industrious performance on the field.

Grealish adds flair and flavour to Everton’s squad, and The Athletic’s Paddy Boyland remarked he was one of the “standouts” against Brighton, alongside the indomitable Jordan Pickford, already looking like producing more potent results than have been the case at City for the past few years.

And, according to Spanish reports, the Three Lions star is already the centre of internal discussions on Merseyside regarding a potential permanent deal. Such is his quality, such is the excitement after that incredible full debut.

Following this trend, TFG might want to repeat their trick in raiding another Premier League rival for a talented player deemed surplus to requirements.

They might even have found such a player already.

Everton line up Premier League star

According to Football Insider, Everton are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yves Bissouma, who has quickly fallen out of favour in Thomas Frank’s new system.

Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma

Tottenham want to sell with Bissouma, having added Joao Palhinha to their ranks this summer, but they also want to recoup as much of their £25m outlay as possible, which could prove a sticking point for the Blues given their financial constraints.

Alas, Moyes is keen, and having entered the final year of his contract down N17, it makes sense that the Malian star would move on before the window slams shut. If Everton can agree a reduced price, it could be a fantastic deal.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Why Everton want Yves Bissouma

Everton have already strengthened in the centre of the park this summer, having signed Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from Chelsea for £28m and having added attacking midfielder Grealish (with Dibling set to sign next).

At the anchor, Idrissa Gana Gueye continues to perform with aplomb, but he’s 35, and a successor must be found. Bissouma looks the man for the job.

Once remarked for his skill as an “absolute monster” in central battles by journalist Aaron Stokes, the 28-year-old has fallen out of favour under Frank’s wing at Tottenham, but he also struggled in Ange Postecoglou’s system, starting just 16 times in the Premier League last season.

His early days in north London and indeed the time spent on the south coast with Brighton showcased his quality, and, like Grealish, he could spark a career resurgence if making the move to Merseyside and forming a part of his reshaped and rehoused Everton.

He’s hardly flawless, but Bissouma remains a crisp distributor and a tough-tackling protector of the backline.

Data from FBref reveals he ranks among the top 18% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 9% for tackles, the top 7% for clearances, and the top 5% for ball recoveries per 90.

And working in Moyes’ system, rooted so firmly in hard graft and unwavering defensive principles, Bissouma could rekindle his quality, as has already been shown through Grealish’s full debut on Sunday.

In fact, working together as different points in Moyes’ midfield, Bissouma and Grealish could strike a first-rate partnership, with the Spurs man using his strength and athleticism to cover plenty of ground, thus enabling the England international to release his winged feet and return to some semblance of his quality at Aston Villa, which led to him being described as “world-class” by one-time Manchester United prospect Luke Chadwick.

By covering and competing with Gueye (and potentially replacing the veteran beyond the 2025/26 season), Bissouma might just return to the kind of form that had English football in awe way back when, and giving that Grealish may yet find Everton to present a permanent home for him down the line, there’s every reason for fans to start getting excited.

Silky on the ball and strong in the duel, Grealish is a slippery customer for any opponent he comes up against, but with the added security of Bissouma in all his combativeness behind, reinforcing the centre, the fleet-footed winger might just succeed in establishing consistency.

Jack Grealish for Everton

The search for a right-back rages on, and fans will anxiously await the completion of Dibling’s move, but the signs are promising indeed for those of an Everton persuasion.

Bissouma would represent a coup, all right, but having already added Grealish to Everton’s fold, Moyes has shown that he has what it takes to bring such players over to the club and chart a course for the top end of the Premier League.

Everton star just proved he could be their new Barkley & it's not Grealish

Everton started their new life at the Hill Dickinson Stadium with a convincing 2-0 victory.

It came down to 30 from 18, 10 from six, two off the last ball and eventually a matter of centimetres as Arundhati Reddy put in a dive to make her ground that turned out to be the winning runs.Under-19 World Cup-winning captain Niki Prasad will remember her WPL debut for taking DC within touching distance. She held the chase together in the end with her 35 off 33 and started the last over with a four when they needed 10 to win but holed out when the equation was two off two.The game otherwise saw collapses in both innings after blazing knocks from the frontline batters. Nat Sciver-Brunt led MI to a respectable total with her unbeaten 80 off 59 and Harmanpreet Kaur blasted 42 off 22, but they soon lost 7 for 35. Shafali Verma’s 43 off 18 set the tone for the chase to hammer away 60 runs for DC in the powerplay, but they soon lost four wickets for 16 runs that made the equation far more tense and took it down to the last ball.Niki Prasad guided Delhi Capitals late in the chase•WPL

The three contentious run-outs that weren’tAs the match got closer and closer with DC losing wickets, there were three run-out decisions that all went to the third umpire Gayathri Venugopalan, and those decided the game. The first came in the 18th over when Shikha Pandey was given not out on her first ball, which resulted in DC getting a bye. No part of Pandey’s bat seemed inside the crease when the LED wicket lit up, but the third umpire gave it not out, basing her decision on a later television frame in which the bail was visibly dislodged. The second came in the next over when DC needed 16 from eight. Radha Yadav was given not out when she ended up bouncing her bat off the ground while diving in; the bat was in the air when the wicket lit up but the umpire, again, was heard going by when the stumps were visibly broken. Radha then smashed the next ball for a six and brought the equation down to 10 off the last over. The last instance was on the last ball of the game, when DC needed two off two. Reddy put in a dive while trying to complete the second run and the stumps lit up when the bat seemed to be on the crease line but the third umpire gave it not out again and it sparked off celebrations for DC.Shafali swings the powerplay in DC’s favourShafali came out all guns blazing even as Shabnim Ismail made Meg Lanning look clueless against her outswingers and beat her six times in 12 balls before eventually knocking over her off stump. Shafali, at the other end, tore into Saika Ishaque with a belligerent hit for a 22-run over. She followed a big six over the covers with four consecutive fours, three of which raced to the off-side boundary and one straight back over Ishaque’s head. Shafali then took Hayley Matthews for 15 runs in the last powerplay over with two fours and a six although she mis-timed one in the same over to midwicket. Two WPL debutants hold their nerve for DCTwo balls later Lanning fell when Ismail got a fourth straight over and it soon became four wickets in four overs when Jemimah Rodrigues was dismissed by Amelia Kerr and Annabel Sutherland missed a shooter from Sciver-Brunt. When DC thought the partnership between Alice Capsey and Prasad of 33 was bringing them back on track, Capsey found Ismail at long-on and DC were in trouble, still needing 56 off 31 with five wickets down. The match turned again when another WPL debutant, Sarah Bryce, also punished Ishaque and then followed an edged four off Sciver-Brunt with a six on the leg side. Bryce soon fell though, for 21 off 10, but Prasad held her nerve to chaperone the lower order into the last over before it went down to the last ball.Sarah Bryce whacked 21 off 10•WPL

Pandey’s swing and Sciver-Brunt’s classPandey made a stellar start to her WPL campaign with some delicious inswing into both right and left-hand batters. She struck twice in her first spell; first in the first over when she made Matthews edge to slip for a duck and four overs later she knocked over Yastika Bhatia’s leg stump in a frugal spell of 3-0-8-2.The other bowlers were not spared so much though. Capsey leaked 19 runs in an over, with Sciver-Brunt showing her dexterity by placing the ball perfectly in the gaps for boundaries. She dabbed one late off Capsey on off, she scooped Reddy on leg, and she unleashed powerful pulls to help MI to 41 for 2 in the powerplay.Harmanpreet throws the hammerHarmanpreet often starts slow and then suddenly flicks her switch on in T20s, and on Saturday this happened in the eighth over. Once she carved Radha over cover-point for four off a no-ball, Harmanpreet launched the free hit for a six over long-off to make it an 18-run over. Next over, she picked Reddy for a six over long-on in a 15-run over but the assault didn’t last too long. After back-to-back fours off Sutherland on the off side, Harmanpreet smoked a six over the midwicket rope to reach 8000 T20 runs and followed it with another four over point. But when she went for another slash outside off, she handed a catch to Prasad; nobody else would hit a six in the remainder of the MI innings.Nat Sciver-Brunt brought out many shots•WPL

Sciver-Brunt the lone woman standingSciver-Brunt had also struck eight fours by then to lead MI past 100 with Sutherland’s 20-run over. Sciver-Brunt reached fifty off 36 balls to keep MI in touching distance of 10 an over with seven overs to go and seven wickets in hand.MI, however, slipped and didn’t even last all 20 overs; they lost wickets in nearly every over from thereon. Kerr was run-out at the non-striker’s end when Minnu Mani deflected a ball off her own bowling, S Sajana edged a slower one to the keeper, Amanjot Kaur yorked herself against Capsey to lose her stumps, and there were two more run-outs as the tailenders tried to give the strike to Sciver-Brunt at the death. When she did get strike, she used her power to despatch the older ball and finished with her highest WPL score.

Quem joga?

Better buy than Paqueta: Man City ready bid to sign "outstanding" £50m star

It’s not too long to wait now for Manchester City fans as next month’s Premier League opener away at Wolverhampton Wanderers gradually sneaks into view.

This summer has been a busy one for Pep Guardiola so far, as the Spaniard attempts to restore the Citizens to their former glories after a disappointing 24/25 campaign, with James Trafford the next standout purchase on the City agenda, after already snapping up the likes of Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Tijjani Reijnders for mega bucks.

Trafford will cost around the £27m mark to bring back to his boyhood club, with the Burnley shot-stopper set to undergo a medical very soon to officially seal the deal.

City are unlikely to be done there as they continue to revamp their options, as a fresh approach is now in the offing for City to land a long-term target to complement the Englishman at the back.

Man City weigh up £50m approach

Burnley aren’t the only Premier League side wary of City’s increased summer spending, with West Ham United also hesitant as Guardiola and Co begin to look at Lucas Paqueta as a potential buy in the middle of the park.

Reports have suggested that the Citizens could snap up the services of the Brazilian for around the £40m price range, having excited those at the London Stadium with his full-throttle displays centrally.

For £10m more, however, City could fix a big problem area in their XI, with a new development from football journalist Dean Jones, when appearing on the Transfers from Paradise podcast, revealing that City have made a fresh approach for Newcastle United star Tino Livramento.

The Magpies, of course, won’t want to lose Livramento as Alexander Isak is also edging towards the St James’ Park exit door.

But, it remains to be seen whether £50m would be enough to prise the 22-year-old away from Tyneside, with Livramento going down as a better signing than Paqueta in finally offering City a fresh defender down their depleted right flank.

Alexis Mac Allister challenges Tino Livramento

Why Livramento would be a better signing than Paqueta

In Paqueta’s defence, he has proven himself to be a bright spark for the Hammers when he hasn’t been embroiled in some off-field issues, as seen in his weighty 18 goals and 14 assists for West Ham over 120 appearances.

However, there is no guarantee he will upset the first team apple cart if he were to switch the London Stadium for the Etihad, with City very much well-stocked in the middle of the park, with Reijnders also joining Guardiola’s camp this summer.

West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta

On top of that, the Spaniard also has promising talents such as Claudio Echeverri, whom he can call upon in the number ten spot, alongside Jeremy Doku, who has shown flashes of his excellence donning City sky blue, when collecting 14 goals and 20 assists down the left flank, where Paqueta is also comfortable playing.

His versatility might well have come in handy, but it’s been a clear issue for City since Joao Cancelo’s exit that they are in dire need of an expansive, attack-minded full-back on the right, with Livramento emerging as the perfect candidate to boost the Citizens in this spot on the pitch.

Across his career to date, the one-time senior England international has stood out as a forward-thinking defender, with a bumper three goals and 11 assists even coming his way when lining up as a right midfielder.

Away from just his output, however, last season in the Premier League also showed off Livramento’s drive and determination to defend valiantly for Eddie Howe’s men, as the 22-year-old bettered stand-in City option Matheus Nunes when it came to ball recovery numbers, with Livramento winning 5.1 on average next to his counterpart’s lesser 2.7.

The hope will be that Livramento can only get better when adjusting to his new environment, having been praised for his “aggressive” and “frontfoot” approach by Howe regularly, on top of also being lauded as possessing a “bright future” in the game by ex-defensive great Ashley Cole.

Whilst Paqueta would no doubt offer City quality as well, he might be more impactful from a background role.

Whereas, the “outstanding” £50m ace – as football journalist Jacob Whitehead has glowingly labelled him – has the potential to be City’s starter on the right for many years to come.
