Cubs Reliever Accomplished Extremely Rare MLB Feat in Win vs. Reds

Chicago Cubs relief pitcher Andrew Kittredge accomplished a feat rarely seen in baseball history. In Wednesday's 6-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds, he struck out three straight batters in just nine pitches for an incredibly rare immaculate inning.

It was Kittredge's only inning of the game, and he was sure to make quick work of it. He got each punch out on nasty sliders that ended up getting the Reds' bats to chase and sent his squad back to the dugout in short order.

Miami Marlins starter Cal Quantrill tossed an immaculate inning earlier this season, which is mathematically even more rare than throwing a perfect game. Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto came close this season too, but was robbed of the feat on a very iffy call.

Cubs catcher Carson Kelly admitted he didn't even realize the immaculate inning was in play until the last pitch.

"I was like wow, he went sinker, sinker, slider, sinker, sinker, slider, sinker, sinker, slider," Kelly said postgame with a smirk, via Marquee Sports Network. "It was pretty cool to be a part of that and I think we kept the ball so, I don't know what he's going to do with it but all-in-all, pretty special."

Kittredge was acquired by the Cubs at last week's trade deadline and was booed Tuesday after he let up four runs in less than an inning against the Reds. He took that personally, and gave the fans at Wrigley Field something immaculate to cheer for the next day.

'It’s all or nothing' – Inter Miami's Javier Mascherano knows what's at stake in MLS Cup against Vancouver Whitecaps

Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano didn’t mince words ahead of Saturday’s MLS Cup final against Vancouver, calling it a “do-or-die” moment and demanding the hunger that has defined his team this season. With Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba set for their final match, Miami arrive at the title stage seeking redemption and their first league trophy.

Getty Images SportMiami believe resilience can deliver a trophy

Two days before the MLS Cup final, Javier Mascherano made it clear that Miami’s strength hasn’t been about dominating every week, but about responding when things went wrong. The team absorbed painful blows – including a 5-1 Concacaf Champions Cup semifinal loss to Vancouver and a heavy Leagues Cup final defeat to Seattle – yet kept fighting their way back to the summit.

“We reach Saturday’s match with everything on the line, all or nothing,” Mascherano said. “It’s a huge reward for the work the players have put in all season, for everything they’ve done as a group. It’s the big prize, and it’s right there for us.”

The Argentine coach emphasized that the final will hinge on mentality rather than tactics or reputation.

“It will come down to the desire we have to eat it or not,” he said, describing Saturday as a moment that demands total conviction.

“Hopefully, we wake up very hungry," he said.

The matchup – Miami vs. Vancouver Whitecaps – offers both clubs the chance to win their first MLS Cup.

“In these last few months, since the Leagues Cup, the team managed to rise again with the goal of getting here in the best possible way,” he said. “The players have had the strength to pick themselves up in every tough moment we faced.”

Mascherano also moved quickly to calm concerns about Tadeo Allende, who missed Thursday’s training session.

“Tadeo showed a slight temperature, so we decided he shouldn’t train so close to the game. It’s nothing serious. He’ll train tomorrow and should be available.”

When asked about past battles with Thomas Muller, he didn’t hide his admiration.

“Not the best memories. He’s one of the best of his generation – a world champion, he won everything with Bayern. He gives Vancouver and MLS a different level of hierarchy.”

Saturday will also be the final match for Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, who will retire after the game. Mascherano, in his first season on the sideline, said finals feel different now, with the focus on managing emotion rather than feeding it.

“As a coach you live it differently. You try to bring tranquility to the team and prepare the week the best way possible,” he said. “We’ve reached the goal of playing the last match for this trophy. The mood and atmosphere around the group are very good.”

Man Utd shortlist British Casemiro replacement thriving after two major knee injuries

Manchester United are in the market for January reinforcements and may now be about to grant Ruben Amorim one of his key wishes at Old Trafford.

Generating momentum has been a struggle for the Red Devils in recent years. However, they have gone five matches unbeaten in the Premier League, showing a renewed sense of resolve at the club.

Standing firm behind their manager, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS will feel vindicated after refusing to succumb to pressure surrounding Amorim. Long-term planning at Manchester United is key, and Fabrizio Romano believes there will definitely be a midfield arrival at the club in 2026.

He said: “Conor Gallagher could be an opportunity, but Atletico Madrid didn’t want to let him go in August. So let’s see what happens in the January window. Angelo Stiller is also a player they appreciate from Stuttgart, but I don’t see a German club selling one of the stars in the January window at all.

“So January is not going to be easy. It’s going to be about opportunities in the summer could be different. And for sure, Manchester United in 2026 will add again, at least one midfielder.”

Romano is right, January is hardly an easy month to do business, and it remains to be seen how much the Red Devils have to spend after a summer of new arrivals, though trying to keep pace with their Premier League rivals may require some form of expenditure.

Midfield is a key area where reinforcements could happen and Hertha Berlin youngster Kennet Eichhorn could be a capture with the long-term in mind.

Casemiro is also coming to the end of his contract, and Manchester United have now shortlisted a successor who has recently been in the headlines.

Man Utd place Bournemouth star Alex Scott on shortlist

According to United In Focus in conversation with Graeme Bailey, Manchester United have placed Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott on their shortlist as a potential heir to Casemiro if he leaves Old Trafford on a free transfer next summer.

The Guernsey-born midfielder earned plenty of adulation last week due to earning a maiden England call-up, and is certainly deserving of the praise he is getting, having bounced back from major knee injuries both at Bristol City and Bournemouth. He is now on the radar of the Red Devils due to his ‘dominant’ displays as Amorim looks to bring fresh energy into his engine room.

Bailey stated: “Alex Scott is emerging as a real name now and United are well aware of his talents. I am told they watched him and liked him during his Bristol City days, but now he is maturing into a dominant player.

“We know all the big names linked to United heading into the New Year and ahead of next summer, but keep an eye on Scott – he is a possibility for a number of clubs and that includes United.”

Man Utd could land a heavy discount on an alternative midfielder

Featuring predominantly in a double pivot at Bournemouth, it is likely Amorim would instruct him to perform the same function at Old Trafford, and it appears he could be someone who fills the deeper-lying role at the Red Devils for years to come.

Gorvin, Leonard skittle Kent to set up comfortable victory

Aggressive cameos with the bat seal Glamorgan points – and NRR boost – inside 12 overs

Andy Gorvin claimed career-best figures•Huw Evans Picture Agency

Glamorgan competed a comprehensive victory over Kent to keep pressure on the qualification spots in the South Group of the Vitality Blast. On a home return to Sophia Gardens in their T20 campaign, Glamorgan chased 119 with more than eight overs to spare in an explosive innings after a dominant bowling display.Andy Gorvin returned career best figures of 4 for 17 along with Ned Leonard taking 4 for 26 to make it nine wickets in his last two matches. Only Jack Leaning put up some resistance with 45 from 40 balls to help lift Kent from 27 for 3 after six overs.Kiran Carlson top-scored for Glamorgan with a quickfire 34 balls as a series of cameos secured a comfortable six-wicket victory.Glamorgan gave the Spitfires first use of the green-topped surface and instantly reaped the rewards of doing so in terms of economy, initially, before Imad Wasim began a clatter of wickets in the third over. With Daniel Bell-Drummond dismissed early, Kent’s top scorer in the Vitality Blast, Tawanda Muyeye, falling in the next over didn’t help Kent at 9 for 2, mistiming a drive to give Leonard a first-ball wicket, caught at deep-third.The struggles in timing and finding the pace of the pitch continued throughout the Kent innings, finding themselves three down in the powerplay with Harry Finch unable to continue his form from a half-century last time out, missing an attempted ramp. With no intention of dying wondering, the Spitfires continued to up their sluggish run-rate on a two-paced wicket. Two internationals in the form of Joe Denly and captain Sam Billings attempted to rebuild until Gorvin dismissed the pair in the same over.Kent slipped from 37 for 3 to 43 for 5 after nine overs. Gorvin was exceptionally difficult to get away with his varied medium pace. Billings was bowled first, slog-sweeping, before Denly played around a nip-backer.Leaning’s blows towards the back end, particularly off Dan Douthwaite, produced his best knock of the campaign and helped Kent to a respectable total. The 31-year-old found two sixes in the final over from Jamie McIlroy, who had dropped him off his own bowling earlier in the innings on 13. Leaning successfully farmed the strike from his No. 11 partner Matt Parkinson, after the lower-order continued to come and go.Glamorgan came out firing as Carlson so often does, leading from the front alongside Will Smale. Twelve from the first over quickly had the hosts realising that this chase could be a matter of net run rate importance rather than the risk of a win-lose situation.Smale’s ramp for six off overseas Tom Rogers’ first ball helped Glamorgan to take 46 from his three overs with a flurry of shots along the way. With Glamorgan having no issue with finding their timing, the relentless striking continued – though a few mistimed shots found fortunate results. Not all fell safe with Smale first to go, bringing the inexperienced Alex Horton to free himself for a quick 20 which included four consecutive boundaries off Rogers.Carlson’s 34 in no time ended, similarly to Smale, trying one shot too but with the game all but done following a 70 for 1 powerplay.Horton’s cameo ended pulling Nathan Gilchrist to deep square leg which brought Ben Kellaway and Colin Ingram together. Ingram punished Parkinson for two sixes in the same over before being dismissed with two to win, the batters enjoying their short stays.Asa Tribe came in to find the winning runs after his return from the Netherlands, where he played for Jersey just 24 hours prior. The potentially important figure in the successful chase being the 11.4 overs it took to complete the task.

Tilak Varma shines on Hampshire debut to give visitors upper hand

India white-ball star goes to stumps on 98 not out with Essex’s total set to be comfortably overhauled

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay 23-Jun-2025Tilak Varma demonstrated on his Hampshire debut that he is not just a big-hitting white-ball tyro, constructing a patient, unbeaten 98 in the Rothesay County Championship in windswept Chelmsford. The 22-year-old Indian left-hand batter, starting a four-game stint on the south coast, was playing only his 19th first-class game, compared to 119 in T20 competitions, including 25 for his country. But he showed remarkable restraint with a 234-ball vigil to help Hampshire build a measured response to Essex’s first-innings 296. At close of play, they were three runs short of parity on 293 for 4.Tilak was the safe pair of hands in half-century stands with Fletcha Middleton (61) and Ben Brown (42) and one of three figures with Liam Dawson (79 not out). But he did revert to the type of pyrotechnics that have made him a hit in the IPL with two sixes off Matt Critchley, one lost over long leg and the other a vicious reverse-sweep, and a third also to long leg off Shane Snater.Earlier, Kyle Abbott completed his third five-wicket haul of the season, winkling out the last two Essex wickets in short order to finish with 5 for 26 from 19 overs. The effort kept him top of the Championship wicket-taking charts with 37.Essex were boosted by Sam Cook’s release from England duty to play his first Championship match since the beginning of May. He returned to find himself without regular new-ball sidekick Jamie Porter, absent with a calf injury, but struck twice with successive balls in his fifth over. Ali Orr was first to go, turning a delivery uppishly to midwicket, and then Nick Gubbins played down the wrong line and edged to third slip.Middleton took a shine to Snater and drove him five times in nine balls to the midwicket boundary, in the process reaching his second half-century of the season from 61 balls. But he departed straight after lunch when he hammered Simon Harmer to silly mid-on where Paul Walter took a sharp catch. The pair had put on 62.With Porter indisposed, 20-year-old fast bowler Mackenzie Jones was handed a debut. His curate’s egg of an opening spell lasted just two overs, and when he came back for three more he was smashed four times in an over by Brown to various points on the off-side boundary.Tilak reached his half-century via a sharp single that might have resulted in a run-out with a better shy at the stumps. But it was followed quickly by a fourth wicket, after a stand of 68 runs, when Brown slashed Critchley to backward point. There was no respite for the Essex bowlers, though, as Dawson was the latest to join forces with the immovable object that Tilak had become. Dawson’s seventh boundary, steering Cook to third, took him to fifty, though he was fortunate in the same over when an edge was put down in the slips.Dawson marked his reprieve by pulling Cook for six over midwicket and adding another with the same shot against Snater as Essex struggled in vain to break up the partnership.Hampshire had wrapped up Essex’s first innings in 16 balls at the start of the day. Abbott had Cook playing no shot to a ball that swung back in and bowled him. In his next over, Snater went for glory in search of the boundary that would have claimed a second batting point, but slashed wildly at a wider delivery and was caught spectacularly on the slide at backward point.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch furiously denies being the 'Ruben Amorim of politics' as party's political woes compared to Man Utd failures

Embattled Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch was dealt a crushing insult by LBC radio presenter Nick Ferrari on Tuesday, when he gleefully compared her tenure to that of Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim. Badenoch and Amorim both took on their respective roles in November 2024, and have presided over some of the worst results in the history of two of the UK's most successful institutions.

WATCH: Ferrari compares Badenoch to Amorim

The Conservatives have lost swathes of their councillors and members to the surging far-right vehicle of Nigel Farage, Reform. Now polling as low as 17% with the general electorate according to the latest YouGov polling, calls for Badenoch to step down have accelerated.

Badenoch was doing her media rounds on Tuesday morning, after she had addressed her members at the Conservative Party's annual conference in Manchester the day before.

Ferrari used the opportunity to direct the jibe at a slightly bemused Badenoch, comparing the politicians requests for more time to that of the Portuguese manager.

"If this was like football Mrs Badenoch, you need to look across to Old Trafford, the manager of Manchester United, Ruben Amorim, who keeps saying ‘give me time’ and keeps losing matches," said Ferrari. "You’re losing councillors, you're losing support, you're losing members. You are the Ruben Amorim of politics Mrs Badenoch."

Badenoch largely skirted around the comparison, instead focussing on her attempts to lead the party through its current predicament.

"Well, that is certainly not the case. What we are doing is shedding a lot of the baggage of the last 14 years. I remember last year, we had people defecting to Labour because Labour was doing well in the polls. Now we have people defecting to Reform, because Reform is doing well in the polls. We need people in the party who are here for the right reasons."

AdvertisementBadenoch and Amorim – two leaders destined for the chop?

It's unclear who out of Badenoch or Amorim should be more insulted by Ferrari's jibe. A recent survey of Conservative Party members found that more than half think Badenoch should leave her role. While no such poll of Red Devils supporters exists, it's not hard to think that given the Portuguese's 17 losses in just 36 competitive games at United would likely return similar numbers.

Man Utd legends continue to criticise Amorim

Several of United's most decorated players have continued to question the manager's methods of late. Paul Scholes recently claimed the Portuguese is "getting too much time" considering the lack of success on the pitch.

On the latest episode of Scholes delivered a damning verdict on Amorim's reign.

He said: "I feel like with Ruben Amorim it’s got to the point where we don’t want to talk about sacking managers all the time and Manchester United do give managers enough time.

"He’ll never get booed by the fans and it wasn’t until that Brentford game [where they lost 3-1] where I thought, ‘He’s getting a little bit too much time’ and it feels like it’s only a matter of time before things come to an end."

Wayne Rooney similarly questioned Amorim's performance on a episode of his podcast: "I just don't know what's going on. I have tried my hand in management and it didn't work out too well, I get it. Ruben Amorim is my age, he is still a young manager and I'm sure he still has a massive future, but what's going on at Man Utd, this is not Man Utd. I honestly hope he can turn it around and he does. But if you're saying to me, 'do you believe he will?', then, after everything I've seen, honestly, I've got no faith in it."
